It's true there was quite a bit of anger and frustration expressed by residents of Homa Bay during the PM's visit there today. A few things can be said about this: First, it should be noted the anger was primarily directed at Otieno Kajuang as a residue of the nomination process, which is acknowledged not to have been textbook in the area and a couple of other places. Second, the PM specifically took precious time off his busy campaign schedule to visit the area in efforts to assure the voters in the area he does not take his vote there for granted as he values every voter's concerns no matter where they may find themselves across the country. Third, no one but the PM has been in the forefront in sherpherding democracy in the country and his making the time to assure the voters of Homa Bay that their voices have been heard is just but one of those examples of the PM showing leadership of the kind we need in our national leaders, especially the president. Fourth, let it not be lost in anyone's mind much as the PM does not take any vote for granted, what's happening in the area is nothing more than an internal expression of displeasure, even anger within and among a loving family; some siblings may not see eye to eye but they all love their parents and will never hold them responsible for the quarrels between and among them. Fifth, yes the nominations in some areas of Nyanza were less than textbook but now it's time to learn lessons from them and move toward the most important of all objectives and that is, making sure Raila and Cord are elected to office from top down and across the nation. With this, let's all remain focused and not allow an inch for those lurking around to derail an otherwise steadily moving train in the direction of victory. This is particularly important message to those who were directly affected in the nominations at issue and I would take this moment to appreciate and urge those aspiring candidates to take a page from what William Oduor did in his nominations quest he bitterly complained about not being open and transparent but firmly stated he still stands behind the reelection of Raila Odinga as our next president. This, is the essence of democracy.

Mr Omwenga there's an excellent chance that Raila will be a one term president if his aloofness continues.

Omwenga,
When men of your caliber begin to exercise such high levels of intellectual dishonesty, there is obviously something afoot.
To begin with, you take a photo from a totally different function and use it to explain a situation in a totally different function without even having the courtesy to so say.
Then you go on and on explaining how Kajwang's problems cannot be Raila's while refusing to acknowledge that Kajwang's situation cannot be viewed in isolation and can only be understood if placed in the right context, which is, his imposition on the people by none other than Raila and his party.
What the people seem to be saying here is, even though we love the party and its leader, they cannot pretend to know who we want leading us more than we do. To me that is a very harsh judgment on the party and its leadership as it demonstrates a very high level of their being out of touch with those they pretend to lead. And by the way, this how rebellions begin, on the periphery. This is something one would never have expected to see in Luo Nyanza a few years ago, but here we are.

Sam:No need for spin doctoring on this one. Onyango Oloo My friend OO,First of all turn on your phone. Second, clarify what your counsel is; are saying this what happened is easily understandable as a family quarrel for which there is no need to "spin" or that it's something that needs spinning but I shouldn't do the spinning. Third, if the latter you'll be wrong because as you know I do not "spin!" Finally, but not least get in touch and let's quarrel now that I have seen or read elsewhere you're at least partially part of the family.

Mwalimumkuu,Three things: First, not much thought went into which photo I used so your basing that to conclude it must be because I intended to be intellectually dishonest is simply not the case; I could have easily taken the time to find today's photo and used same but you'll agree the import would have been the same as far use of photos go. Second, you must read if you haven't read what I have blogged about having open and transparent elections at all levels of the electoral process--including intra-party nominations. Third, unless you know something I don't know, Raila had nothing to do with the nominations process as he left that up-to the able Hon. Franklin Bett his Cord Electoral Board team to handle.

Here is the fracas in Homa Bay, notice how the PM desperately tries to calm the crowds without any success, sweating profusely, he takes his seat and waits anxiously. Mwalimumkuu,Let me not put you on the spot in terms of answering this question in current or even recent past; but have you going back, say to Secondary School days where your girlfriend or "squeeze" or whatever you preferred to call her was yelling at you and could not stop yelling no matter how much you tried to calm her down? Did it not end up you making up and her behaving as though nothing happened? How about in a general family setting? Ever experienced the same thing or know of anyone who has with their siblings? What you are sharing is no different, except it's in a political setting. Nothing more, nothing less. Now, let's go further on this since we have gone there? Ever compared that situation with a friend whose girlfriend not only did not stop yelling but left them along with their goodies--forever? Or in the family setting it was worse than just yelling and being momentarily uncontrollable, like simply being forcefully silenced and not saying even ngwe when the eyes went red? Meaning, even the yelling one would say, OMG, what I have I done now; I am dead!!! One scenario is Cord, the other Jubilee. Guess which situation civilized people would choose? That's basically the choice voters will chose come March 4th; one team where dissent is handled amicably or a team where no dissent is allowed at all. I know you know which one is the Raila/Cord team or Jubilee. Wengi wameamua tayari na wengine watafanya hivyo hivyo mbaka siku ya kura. That's all that matters not these isolated incidences, legitimate and genuine the dissatisfaction maybe and is.

Like I said you cant fool all the people all the time. Raila had best start walking the talk or he's in for a rough ride Markopolitico How about just like the spin masters not blame Raila and blame the booing disgruntled few in Homabay? You raise the issue correctly that the problem is at the grassroots following the nomination debacle where the right people were replaced by the wrong one. The ones with their nomination stolen moved on to other parties within CORD which meant that their supporters will still vote for Raila. So we can safely move the blame from the disgruntled ones on the ground and actually pile the entire blame on Raila advisers. When Raila calls for six-piece voting he makes several mistakes that the booing crowd should have provided lessons for. First he should never have re-opened healing wounds by attempting to force on the people to vote the Bett nominees knowing very well that these characters were the cause of the nominatin strife. Secondly by telling the people to ignore the other CORD partners and vote for ODM in a 6-piece voting model, he immediately tells his partners that the partnership is only to make him president and nothing more. Can Raila actually go to Bungoma and ask the people there to vote in the manner he asked the Homabay people to vote? Raila needs to fire his advisers otherwise the loss margin will be a lot larger and more embarrassing if he does not sort it out!

Uwi Mayie!Usually, in good politics, and more so after such a crisis as unfolded in Nyanza in the aftermath of the sham ODM nominations, a damage-control-protocol goes into gear, ran by local operatives who know the ground. Wise, it would be then, that by the time the Dear Leader comes to gloss it over and rally the troops, the deals that need be done [to smoothen out things] need to have been done, and the ground well-prepared to avoid public embarrassments. Television loves a scandal captured live. As the case above. The deployment of the GSU in neighbouring Nyatike, and the zero-tolerance exacted on the youthful demonstrators who loudly protested the rigging have not helped matters any, especially when it became unclear whether top ODM honchos had overruled or misled Raila, --a Raila whose political instincts appeared to be on the wane. Nyanza now is full of Old Men in ODM castigating the drunken hooligan youth! And the youth respond: who brought the half-loaf you have been fatting on?Now, part of the compromise was that Raila would NOT ENDORSE any candidate in Homabay county, and would campaign for CORD in general and not ODM in specific. He would be neutral. Not ostracise defectors. So as not to enrage already disturbed sensibilities, especially of the 'street', which means the youth. I always refer to this group as the Parisian mob, or the Roman crowd. Volatile. Increasingly insolent to the older generation. Brutalised by general social stagnation. Restive. It was with these desperate groups and gangs supporting a difuse array of candidates, some no longer in ODM, that local operatives had reached deals with, on the needed neutrality of the mother and father party. But Lo, by design or otherwise, there was my man Otieno Nyakwamba Kajwang' more or less in the role of master of ceremonies! and him is ODM through and through! and he was not being nice to the opposition within, oblivious to his 'polarising persona' ;D. And if he was even going to introduce Raila, having been given a place of prominence on the dais, then that was not THE LOCAL AGREEMENT, and not the conflict-resolution compromise, because this in effect meant Alila, the fellow reputed to have beaten Kajwang' hands down and now decamped, was being disadvantaged once more, being maligned as NON ODM, -- ikete tenge ka gima en kimirwa! [being given the bastard treatment. Excommunicated in code!]. And there on the podium too was Nyong'o, thought of as one of the architects of the rigging. And even as the crowd grew restless and tumult increased, a party honcho was still introducing the ODM ASPIRANTS [EG for Homabay town] as the INCOMING MPs and whatever! These were ODM ENDORSEMENTS, flying in the face of the agreement that every candidate would carry his own cross in whatever party he was in, and the people would decide on March 4. This meant HEAD-OFFICE was ignoring grassroots operatives and local linkmen. Branding Hombay ODM, reserving her goodies for a specific discredited clique. 6-piece was the dogma. To hell with Madoadoa! Ka-Ng'a! Non! exploded the youth. Some of the shouts were pretty rough [in the rude and obscene sense], and Raila failed to rise to the occasion and take command of the crowd. Perhaps wisely so, because he would have been forced to condemn the rigging; and in so doing, the Roman mob of Homabay, sensing blood, would have bayed for more and more, with the risk of forcing the Emperor into throwing the dry bones of Nyong'o and Oburu into the yawning jaws the aroused monster. Thus disoriented, the picture we saw was of a forlorn, profusely sweating, even weeping Raila, bewildered by a terrible political miscalculation. Merlin without the magic. The untold tale will remain that of the extreme levels of damage limitation, compromises, to which local operatives of ODM in the area have gone, to realise a workable situation, to work out a live-able environment for all concerned. The fall-out from the rigging, was more than could be glossed over. Try hard as Omwenga will. But officially, in apportioning the blame, the ODM canon says youth were bought, and it is external forces using them to ruin 'sifa', chia, and etc etc mag Raila. -- Nyithindogi onyiew kendo ohon mondo giketh ni Raila. [These children have been bought and are being manipulated to derail Raila and our dream]. To my amazement, a man the intellect of Dalmas Otieno said this publicly. So there you are folks, the ODM rigging festival in Nyanza, and the protests that followed, were the brain-child and master-stroke of the PNU-gang!Believe it or not! ;D 'Diplomats are trained to lie for their country. I am lying for Luoland my country. And there is some honour in that!' My brother told me when we discussed the matter.
