thanks mzee ;D for the rescue. the exit of herman cain, whose base i am told is gravitating into newt gingrich's orbit, robbed us of what would have been the battle royale of them all (blame it on that woman hugh?) its wrong to assume that obama's parade is all set. for sure, we don't know what the democrats are upto,do we? how sure are we that the 2012 democratic ticket is reserved for obama? there is a sense in which we may want to believe that the increasingly wiser american voters would have to look the other way but the numbers - from the campaign war chest and opinion poll ratings to winning those tricky states in the primaries, are still a long shot(me thinks) so as the gop struggle to fix their mess and hopefully give us another maccain,lets critically examine obama and get a sense on what he must not do and importantly do between now and the next democratic primaries. i think obama's battles will be on three fronts; economy,foreign relations and identity politics or what i loosely call americana for lack of better word. first is the the challenge from the administration's foreign relations policy. on foreign relations, obama, to my small mind, has on average delivered on his pre- and post election pledges.for instances,he has brought the troops back home iraq . healso killed osama and of course it had to take obama to find and kill osama but i can argue that the killing of osama left america more at risk on the war on terror. of significance, it opened a diplomatic fallout with nuclear pakistan, a key plank in the fight against terrorism. na isi toshe, here is where the wave of anti-american sentiments in asian continent is hitting the crescendo.the evidence is in the huge rallies commanded by anti-american former cricket star gunning for state power. pullout in iraq for instance has open sectarian fissures that inflames the sunnii/shiite deep-seated passion and resonates across arab world notably palestine, saudi arabia, egypt, syria, lebanon and iran. guantanamo is still not closed yet and hostility against america especially in latin america where leftists like hugo chavez believes cia is behind an "outbreak of cancer' among radical regional leaders. obama's foreign policy is also open to scrutiny given the contradictory approaches and responses to autocratic regimes around the world.for instance see how he has handled the yemeni figure below as opposed to the dictator whose portrait is in the photo a youthful syrian protester is holding below.  china is a huge problem not only because america owes it billions of dollars but because it is a fast rising global power that is gobbling up foreign markets like africa. china's agenda( by the way did you know that you can listen to taraab in a chinese station?.... and that some of the finests journalists in kenya are trooping to newly established chinese african media empire?),focus and priority is diametrically opposed to that of what america led espouses. russia with vladimir putin cruising back to the kremlin albeit with america backed dissent, is an urgent foreign policy headache.remember putin's increasing anti-america rhetorics and threats against america by outgoing president over the america hasty nuclear defense shields push. all that obama had worked hard for, which in diplomatic speak is called reset, with russia is now a wasted energy. the relations between russia and usa is all time low and america don't need new nuclear enemies over and above the likes of north korea and pakistanthe middle east conundrum where obama response is drawing skepticism and outright disapproval from a chunk of crucial american jewish constituency is another challenge for obama in 2012. then there is the economy, a mess which as his campaign team rightly argues he inherited in shambles. it remains unimpressive. throughout his presidency, obama has been expending energy fixing the depression and history was made when in his tenure, america's global credit rating was lowered by one of the global credit rating agency. the employment rate is still at all time high( 67 per cent is it?) and his rating has been falling on this front. this is not to say that obama administration has 'lost the battle." but what voters would be interested in as we saw with bill clinton's its economy stupid vote grabbing machine, is not the astuteness but how he delivers on the major assignment: creating jobs, fixing the interest rate and skyrocketing cost of living...generally taking america away from the bubble and bust economy. the third battle front will be, in my view, about americana.the identity politics to say the least. one of the reasons, actually the key reasons that my round table, the self-styled hurligham consensus group, advance for his inability to visit kenya, his ancestral land. for obama to visit kenya in an election year in kenya and america would be politically inexpedient.suicidal is the word i am shying away from. the surge in anti-obama sentiments and populist movements like tea party and extremists like birthers can be traced to the less spoken of contradiction in american society itself.this is manifest in how america voices, the likes of angelina jollie, donald trump and jerome corsi disparagingly utters the o word. obama has reportedly been target of attempted assassination plots in american soil reported in the media-- at least twice after his ascendancy to the presidency and before he was elected to white house. i am attempting to say that there is a growing constituency in america that despite lack of evidence still falls to the hateful propaganda of minority white supremacist,deniers who appears not to accept the fact that a black can end up in a house that was built by black slaves. barracking obama on his identity may not be a threat on the face value and given his historical fix to this political card both in the primaries and last presidential race,but recent events suggest that it ought not to be overlooked and remains one challenge. all said, i think obama is more wiser which is all he needs in 2012. |

It's now officially back to the silly season of politics - full time campaigns! The Iowa state Republican primary elections (aka caucuses) have just been concluded. 4 years later after spending $ 24 million, the plastic-like Mitt Romney, only got 25% of the vote – about 30,000 votes, virtually tied with conservative hawk Rick Santorum. This shows the reluctance of the Republicans to line up behind Romney, who sounds more like a car salesman (folks you can hardly trust – they can sell you a shiny engine-less mkebe in the name of a car). As Republicans now head to the next primary in New Hampshire, Santorum is now bolstered and energized (but broke). Trust me, these Republicans are hitting each other big-time. The fight between Romney and Gingrich is going to play out in New Hampshire - the latter has promised a bloody fist-fight. Ron and Gingrich also don't get along, since Gingrich's days as Speaker of the House in the 90s. Here’s another humorous tit-tat between two Republican rivals, Utah billionaire Jon Huntsman, and Ron Paul, the Anti-War (Libertarian) from Texas. It started with Jon Huntsman, who didn’t even bother to campaign (waste money) in Iowa, instead camping in New Hampshire. Jon mocked Ron Paul’s intense Iowa ground campaign and disparagingly remarked; “People pick CORN in Iowa; People pick PRESIDENTS in New Hampshire”. Ron Paul delayed his response to Jon until after the Iowa primary results came. Jon Huntsman came last with just 1% of the vote. This became the butt of Ron Paul's cruel joke. All in all, things look pretty good for President Obama's re-election prospects, despite the terrible economy. He's a terribly good campaigner, with an excellent strategic team, standing strong in match-up polls, great debator, ..facing a generally weak opposition. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Now, common sense seems to have won in Iowa. Mitt Romney, while the worst in the eyes of the conservatives, is the guy most likely to mount a worthy challenge to Obama, if general national polls are studied. That common sense in Iowa, is likely to be the pulse of the nation as the elections approach.
Santorum: would carpet bomb Iran. Even the lunatic right recognise he is a far worse lunatic!

They've released a 17 minute film on Romney's business model of acquiring companies, stripping them down, laying off workers, selling assets, relocating them to cheap-labor overseas sites, ...then laughing all the way to the bank. Being cast as a job slasher certainly isn't good for Romney. we haven't even got to the issue about his tax records that he's ever so dodgy about. is he hiding something?

Texas Governor Rick Perry, a poor debator, has so far performed very dismally. He is currently pitching in South Carolina, hoping to cash in some support from the Christian Evangelical base of the South (& Tea Party "anti-Big-government" supporters). In my estimation, it's just a matter of time before he drops out. On the Jewish question, that's often the unspoken word. The majority WASP (White Anglo-Saxonian Protestant) vote, especially the blue-collar working class, is generally assumed to be distrustful of EXPANDED Jewish dominance - because the latter are already assumed to control Wall Street (Banking & Finance); Media; and most Industries of the U.S. Economy anyway. Thus the whispered need to keep 'em off the last avenue of power by not voting a Jewish President. Right now in the Republican primary, a lot of such voters are coalescing around Ron Paul, Santorum, and Gingrich. |

Buoyed by the win in Iowa and NH and with the Bain attacks falling flat, i think Romney is well on his way to the GOP nomination. his opponents may slow him down but i think the SC primary will make it 3-0 for Romney.

The Romney's have citizenship ties to Mexico, not necessarily latin blood. Romney's grandfather migrated to Mexico years back - escaping prosecution for polygamy. Mormons are polygamous - but the U.S. law banned polygamy. In fact Romney's father was born in Mexico. He only returned to the U.S. at the height of the Mexican Revolution (fearing being a target). Mitt was then born in the U.S. upon his father's return.
He's very likely going to win the Republican Primary. But pay attention to the Bain Documentary attacks (mentioned above by Akinyi) which Gingrich has just unveiled in SC. They will run for two weeks. I suspect they will eventually have a toll on his overall favourability. The fact is, matched with Obama, that entire Republican cast is not strong. Obama's archilles is obviously the struggling economy. It's hard to get traction with such an economy. By October 2012, the trajectory will be clearer.

This looks poised to be a very short primary for GOP, it could as well end by the end of the month. If Mitt can pocket SC on 21st and and FL 31st, the thing is over.
Although the whole game changes after the nomination, it is rather obvious that the Dems under Obama will have a herculean task flooring whomever the GOP nominee will be, and the way things are, it will be Mitt, not exactly what Obama and the Dems might have wanted if you asked me.
