Great news but only if we manage it well...it could be a gift and a curse as opined in this NYT article on Uganda... www.nytimes.com/2011/11/26/world/africa/uganda-welcomes-oil-but-fears-graft-it-attracts.html?_r=1Hopefully it is ‘sweet crude oil’ which is the highest quality of oil in the market. It’s still early so we have no idea how viable it is… This ‘discovery’ explains a lot of what has been happening of late especially the war in Somalia and Lapsett…it also makes sense why Britain would send a diplomat based on a fake document… A gift and a curse…a gift and a curse….

危机'wei ji" = Crisis....... 危险 "wei xian"= danger 机会 "ji hui"= Opportunity...................So we must not have WEI JI in kenya because of oil. we better hust have JI HUI

How about looking at how our constitution deals with such things :
71. (1) A transaction is subject to ratification by Parliament if it–– (a) involves the grant of a right or concession by or on behalf of any person, including the national government, to another person for the exploitation of any natural resource of Kenya; and (b) is entered into on or after the effective date. (2) Parliament shall enact legislation providing for the classes of transactions subject to ratification under clause (1).

Angola had a GDP growth of above 10 % in the last decade same high figures apply to Equatorial Guinea. Yes politically they are not democracies but economically they are example of possibility of growth when oil starts flowing. BBC had a pictorial.... www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-16967815Note i picked Bots as the best example. They have both political and economic credibility.

BBC had a pictorial.... www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-16967815Note i picked Bots as the best example. They have both political and economic credibility. It is the politics that I am referring to. If economic growth was the most important thing, Japan, which went through more than a decade of zero or minus growth would be in very sad shape it is not. What is the point of "economic growth" if it means that a few eaters get even richer and the masses are no better off? How has Angola's oil (and other wealth) translated into similarly substantial improvements in the lives of ordinary Angolans? Same questions for Equatorial Guinea, which seems to border on a caricature of a country. In fact, let's take Kenya: You keep hearing about all this economic growth, but is life for the average Kenyans actually improving? We beg for food, people die from easily preventable diseases, jiggers are literally eating people alive in the 21st century.

@ otishotish, you summed it up well "What is the point of "economic growth" if it means that a few eaters get even richer and the masses are no better off? How has Angola's oil (and other wealth) translated into similarly substantial improvements in the lives of ordinary Angolans? Same questions for Equatorial Guinea, which seems to border on a caricature of a country."
And how many times have we seen this;
I do predict that there will be more oil 'discoveries' along the Rift Valley's tectonic plates into Somalia and Ethopia

The risk here is that we forget all the development plans and start planning around oil ... and oil is an exhaustible resource. Exhaustible resources are a wealth bubble.
Natural resource harvesting, even with the best management, will breed extraction-oriented human resource, and when exhausted it will leave hungry bellies in between hands that lack the skills necessary to cope with the new situaiton.
I say leave the crud in the ground for a good while, and let's take that time to plan on how to use it without being used by it.

Exactly and for those who care to be discerning with the timing would have noticed that the Turukana oil discovery, which by the way if you read the fine print says could be years away before even drilling starts was a smoke screen for the urgent task at hand which was to put mechanics in place to prevent the toad being hauled to ICC. The big announcment on Monday was not about oil being discovered, it was about preventing Kibaki from going to ICC eventually.

so, now that we have oil in turkana and likely to have more wells in rift valley and kilifi in coast, shouldn't we be having a full fledged ministry for this? here are some interesting revelations from this oil discovery story, mainly answering key questions i raised earlier: about the deal and its potential benefits for kenya. www.businessdailyafrica.com/i also observed that the company is not all that white owned after all.there is a familiar face. www.tullowoil.com/index.asp?pageid=15

We are going to be fine my friends Our record in 50 years of "independence", including our record in corruption (even Nigerians fear us these days), is not one that inspires optimism.

I can imagine the meetings going on now on how to "protect the interests of the Turkana" by NGO's looking for a quick buck!!
In the meantime an SMS being circulated in Kikuyu says that the Kikuyus originated from around lake Turkana and they moved after many died from capsizing of boats on the lake (guturukana in gikuyu hence the name of the lake) so now they are being urged to return to their 'ancestral land'!!!

I have formed a land-development company that will soon be buying very large pieces of land in certain northern parts of Kenya. We will be partitioning that land into smaller pieces for onward sale to those Kenyans who have always had a yearning to live in that part of the country and to assist in its development.

We are going to be fine my friends Cautious optimism is many times misconstrued as pessimism. We are going to be fine, HOPEFULLY, but the outcome will be best if we plan appropriately and pursue the best options.

This just in.....a new party was registered in Lodwar today. TSK - Turkana Sio Kenya - has called on Kenya's DC to relocate back to Kenya. They however said they will be happy to keep the Land Rovers.
