Fancy speeches aside, politicians like Uhuru must be told that they will not escape their past misdeeds that easily. If Uhuru's performance at the Treasury is anything to go by, I honestly do not see how he will transform the life of the maize farmer or the jobless graduate he talks and dreams about.
Uhuru who is now promising to transform the economy left it growing at a meagre 3.5% when he quit as finance boss (other countries in the region are performing at about 6%) . Do I need to mention about scandals that unfolded under his watch?. The same Uhuru talking about 'Justice being our shielder' has done everything in his power to ensure PEV victims don't get justice through ICC. And although I just grossed over his speech I am not sure he told us how he intends to address land injustices and inequalities largely initiated by his late dad.

TNA tried their best to project themselves as party of the youth that's new, fresh and imaginative. Even the puppet Chairman and Secretary General look youthful and untainted but it's all a sham, Uhuru is TNA and TNA is Uhuru. Sadly in Kenya, political parties eventually find themselves embracing ethnic kingpins and political dinosaurs who are used to "herd" their communities like goats and deliver the votes for a handsome fee or thanked with some seat somewhere. Elections are still many months away and I doubt TNA can survive without these toxic owners of various tribes. They will surely crawl back as Kenyans forget the glitz and glamour of that launch and promise to deliver heaven as long as they are allowed to eat ugali with the King.

The launch of TNA and the coming out of Uhuru Kenyatta was admittedly a pompous affair. Loads of cash was spent. As expected, the media did not disappoint... the build up to the main event was out of this world. One would not be judged harshly to think Kenya was about to launch a space shuttle.
The seditious use of national flag colors to drape the ICC suspect was absolutely brilliant. And of course we must all just love the dove, a universal symbol of meekness and peace... only in this case, it appears to be fleeing at lightning speed away from UK's grasp. Still one must admire the transformation from cockerel to dove... it's surely for the birds.
The choice of venue, basking at the gaze of his father's statue, was quite symbolic (and a reminder of going back to the past). The warm mother-son embrace brought emotional tears to many. Fair thee well son... I suppose.
'I believe- Tunaweza' is a crafty Obama-like slogan that resonates with all who want good for country. Like most Kenyans, 'I believe I can' but must remain suspicious of those selling the dream. In some cases, the dreams are nightmares... such as an ICC fugitive presidency and the associated calamities to follow.
We must however give credit where it's due. Outside of the Sonko/Waititu cacophony, true youthful leadership was presented. You heard them gallantly support the cause. You just cannot remember them or the cause. Can you? What were they really talking about? Some help here.

presidential candidates for other parties playing a leading role at the launch of another (rival) party - only in kenya ;D Akinyi, I found it very curious and disturbing. The youth have messed in public. Without expounding any new concept of the political party, they, belonging to other parties and themselves presidential candidates, have failed to recognize what their presence means at this launch. Either their rivalvry --leading to different candidatures, is fictitious and merely theatrical, or they are oblivious to their presence being an endorsement of their competitor over themselves. In other words, Ruto and Wamalwa know so long Uhuru is running they are only running for the form. Eugene being happier because he could calculate himself the happy scavenger the way Kalonzo used to! But Ruto, without this option, has trashed and diminished himself thoroughly. He should have been elsewhere campaigning drawing attention to his party and his own candidacy, like Raila and Mudavadi were!

For worse or for good, this speech was historic. This was Uhuru, the second front-runner, making his pitch and staking a claim on the future of Kenya. His lengthy application letter for the top-job. It gives us the best insight into his public thinking, his vision of himself, what he thinks he can contribute, how he assess himself so far. I consider the plight of Uhuru Kenyatta uncannily a mirror of the national plight. I will explain. Uhuru Kenyatta has the chance to be elected president of the republic, become the second Kenyatta regime, and laugh Raila, another Odinga, to his grave. On the other hand, he faces the possibility of a lifetime in jail far off at the Hague. Few men have fate enticed thus. It creates tectonic tensions in the mind. Now for Kenya, the next elections are equally pivotal. If well-run, smooth and legitimate, we will exorcise the ghost of the last PEV, and sigh a mighty relief as we engage development gears. But if the process is flawed, and fails to resolve the political competition, the nation could very well reverse into atavistic spasms intensely superior to the last bout. These are tensions which make us politically schizophrenic. Jekyl and Hyde in competition, and who wins the morrow is up for grabs. ----------------- He has been, we know, a finance minister in a period of many [deliberate? computer] calculation errors; a defecting leader of the official opposition; a crown-prince who ended up being rejected by the electorate, and, the elephant in the room, an indictee at the International criminal court bases in the Hague. Given all this baggage, would the son of Kenyatta rise to the occasion, and show a penetrative understanding of his reality ---[hopefully his speech-writers having studied some of the best speeches, like Obama's on race, Clinton on single parents origins, or JFK Kennedy and why a catholic can be president of the USA] . Would he gloss over these issues, the demons that hang over his not too short career in public life? or would he ignore them completely? Would he tackle them to the core? or would he do a shuffle and unveil a whole new captivating platform that makes the past irrelevant? This how I wanted to judge if the son of Jomo understands what accountability means in the modern era, especially when he goes on about this 'youth thing'! Accountability, methinks, must be a very youth thing. One notes the sleek, refined and posh presentation of this launch. Hollywood clockwork I could say. And one notes the ad-hoc, shriveled and disorganized way in which UK conducted public business at the ministry of Finance and, earlier on, I think local government. When it is his personal thing, he hires the best and knows to find them, even the QCs of England, but when it is his patronage call for public service, he promotes substandard: Njeru Githae was not the best PNU could come up with at Finance [some deadly house of Mumbi politics about this]. Githu Muigai is not worth his title in that job. Eugene Wamalwa is a lightweight at JUstice &CA. Uhuru then, in his political calculations, fails to recognize Kenya needs the best to deliver; just like in his personal tribulations, he hires the best! [But yes, this trait of saddling the public with substandard appointees is not the monopoly of the son of Jomo, nor of Kenyan top-dogs!] I think Uhuru delivered his speech well given the circumstances [of extreme stress] I think he is under. He was passionate, serious and, even if haltingly, looked statesmanlike! The problem for me is, the distance between his words and his reality. A man who has been finance minister, even for 3 years, must state his achievements. If he doesn't, but promises to do good things in future, I give him neither credit nor credibility. He has to account why he did not do them last time. But the speech also ignored all the salient issues on the nation's mind. like he could have shown he understands the plight of the nation, in as far as the consequences of non cooperation with the ICC would manifest. He must soothe my nerves, that he knows Kenya being a financial paria means economic doom, like Mugabe's Zimbabue, and that he would never allow that ---coz he loves Kenya so much! [that is the kind of lie I love to hear!]

The surreptitious Mungiki Boss, Uhuru Kenyatta and Eunice Eugene Wamalwa speak better than average Kenyan politicians but still pale in comparison to Ruto. If eloquence and oratorical delivery (both in English and Kiswahili) were the benchmark for Presidency, we would be having President William Ruto today......Frankly, this speech lacked substance..but churned out a lot of empty rhetoric and platitudes.
On the lauch itself - If the premise of this launch was to create perception of youth renaissance; it only created one of elitist resurgence. The billionaire and aristocrat class of wealthy land owners grabbers and their privileged families paraded under colourful tents definitely produced the opposite effect intended. For youth, there was ubiquitous supply of elite and spoilt sub-urbanites from Nairobi’s leafy enclaves. Yes – we saw the deliberate effort to stay away from the Mungiki class; the thugs who stormed Nairobi’s streets chanting for Uhuru back in 2002. But also, there were no boda boda cycles or any sign of either rural or poor youth presence (prototype of majority youth). This was an ostentatious display of wealth, pomp, opulence and power – the very things ordinary Kenyans love to hate.
In short, this attempt to awe simpletons and gullibles...by creating a perception of entitlement and invincibility... backfired by the simple lack of representation of ordinary Kenyans.
Another notable thing – the conspicuous absence of erstwhile ally Kalonzo Musyoka from the festival otherwise attended by other ‘competitors’ like Ruto and Wamalwa. An obviously elbowed-out Kalonzo was instead to be found addressing low-key events attended by twenty-something Kenyans in the far-flung vantage of Texas, U.S.A. That’s how far Kalonzo had to run – to escape the outright humiliation-cum-rejection of his katikati overtures. I highly doubt that Kalonzo’s sympathizers will one day join this Uhuru ‘believe’ bus to stand at the back.
Of course as alluded, Uhuru’s speech was not about national issues – it was about his personal fears and do-or-die ambition...how to evade the ICC by becoming President. He will throw in everything to try buying or force-grabbing the Presidency. He had no qualms declaring his run “unstoppable”. A man who has never formed a party before; ducked from leading the Opposition (opting instead to be incorporated into a government led by his tribesmate); and failed to effectively run Kenya’s oldest party KANU; launching a new one TNU is just a PR stunt. Did anyone hear anything about this party’s manifesto or values? Any ideological pointers? Any vision outlined? Nope.
There are many reasons why Uhuru would want to run away from issues. Kenyans have a clue as to whether Uhuru Kenyatta would want to implement a Constitution that threatens his family’s hold on vast land parcels within many Counties of Kenya (Nairobi, Kiambu, Mombasa, Lamu, Kilifi, Kwale, Taita-Taveta, Nakuru, Uasin-Gishu, Kericho, and others). The Constitution opens avenue for taxation of idle land in such enclaves...would President Uhuru accent to taxing idle Kenyatta family holdings?
As a matter of fact, Governors in the counties listed above would at some point be at loggerheads with land-grabbers like the Kenyatta family. It’s therefore anyone’s guess whether a President Uhuru would implement devolution fully. As Finance Minister – he already stepped into the footsteps of his late father (who abolished the Federalist Lancaster Constitution) – Uhuru laid grounds for financial strangulation of the counties even before the implementation started. These are crucial speech-issues Uhuru would rather run away from and dwell on “how to incorporate nomination losers during primary elections”.
All Kenyans want an improvement of its transport system – especially the main economic corridor (Mombasa to Western Border). I doubt they want more and more concentration of super-highways and railway lines only towards Thika. On education, I highly doubt if Uhuru’s confidence in FPE robbers inspires belief in educating future school children. On an issue like promoting national cohesion, integration and peace, I doubt Uhuru’s deep involvement in PEV nor his arraignment behind ICC docks, offers any hope or belief in Tutaweza. He can sing this to the birds but few will believe anything remotely close.
After witnessing his visceral reaction to the initial illegal appointments by Kibaki in the Judiciary (Visram, Kilukumi et al) how can the crucial issue of judicial reforms and vetting of public officials pan out under the table-banging Uhuru Kenyatta? Watch out for that temperament display too. These are not issues Uhuru would want to outline.
On an issue like the economy, the middle class who interact with banks (& know Uhuru as a bank owner – a couple of banks); having also witnessed Uhuru’s Finance-regime and it’s entrapment of thousands of customers in high-interest loans and mortgages, have a clue on which side a President Uhuru could stand. An ICC fugitive President is the easiest catalyst to financial doom for Kenya. The markets would virtually collapse; investors would flee; strategic, bilateral and multinational partners would withdraw; inviting mega corruption scandals and automatic repression. Social amenities would decay, living standards fall, and zero attention paid to redistributive and welfare assistance to the very poor. Many Kenyans can already figure this out – even before official campaigns start.
The kind of security situation offered under Kibaki (on and off surges in Mungiki activities, extrajudicial executions, intermittent al Shabab attacks et al) would likely prevail under the same unreformed and tribalized police. What more would be new? I guess Uhuru would want to run away from the dark side of the Kibaki administration which he is virtually steering right now…but people have eyes, ears and brains.

TNA chooses issue based campaigns
Published Monday, May 21 2012 at 00:00 By Martin Mutua Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, finally launched his presidential bid on The National Alliance (TNA) party by appealing for an issue-based campaign that is devoid of name-calling. Uhuru also declared that TNA would be willing to work with other political parties hinting at the much-touted alliance that brings together the G7 group. “The National Alliance is eager to work and even merge with other like minded parties to ensure greater stability and cohesion in the political arena,” he added. Uhuru, who appeared to reach out to other presidential candidates in a bid to cool tensions, declared his new presidential vehicle would follow the path of peace and tolerance.“Our actions in coming days and months must speak louder than the words we utter. Let us not resort to name calling and politics characteristic of previous electioneering seasons,” he added. promised land He pointed out that TNA will offer a paradigm shift to the coming polls and appealed to the party members to ensure they are seen to be acting differently. “The ship sets out today and past the storm we shall sail to the promised land. This, ladies and gentlemen, is not an Uhuru alliance but your alliance,” he added. Uhuru noted that TNA was a union for the willing adding that it was for those who believe that Kenya can take up its leadership role in Africa as an oasis of peace and prosperity. “The ingredients of the national cake are enough for every one of us. Let us indulge wisdom in choosing the bakery and the team to do it,” he told the mammoth crowd that had gathered to witness the unveiling of his new party. He went on to state that time was up for mediocrity and barren promises adding that the pursuit of happiness was not the preserve of a privileged few. commitment to change “Let us look forward to a brighter Kenya with unprecedented hope and unwavering commitment to change,” he added. Uhuru appealed to Kenyans to trust the new party despite past experiences of parties with no ideologies coming and going while others have been hatched and crushed even before the ink had dried on their manifestoes. “The National Alliance seeks to dispel the belief that politicians are bigger than party ideologies. The new political parties act has taken up its big brother role and any party that pursues an individualistic agenda and personality cults has no future in the Kenya of today,” he added.
He noted that TNA has a firm structure of ideologies rooted in its core believes.“We are a party that believes in principles of African social justice that are founded on progressive policies and ideologies. We are a party driven by every day desires that Kenyans have,” he added. Uhuru noted that TNA will offer solutions for the problems Kenyans are facing today as well as emerging challenges of tomorrow adding that they will also seek to dispel the notion that parties are founded with the vision of getting to power. “We fold our sleeves and get onto the ground to listen to you, to get your feedback and partner in sustainable solutions. There is no greater calling than that which demands of us service to others,’ he added. Uhuru pointed out that problems bedeviling the country can only be addressed through home grown solutions adding that they will not sit back and wait for imported solutions. “A nation that is highly dependent on foreign incentives can only grow so much. The national Alliance will lay emphasis on home grown solutions to problems afflicting our nation and the African continent as a whole,” he added.
And the DPM warned that the sovereignty of the country would be safeguarded at all costs pointing out it was core to their belief.
freedom “We cannot compromise that which is God given for temporary gains. Freedom is never given on a silver platter. It is fought for and earned by those who believe in justice and equality for all,” he added. Uhuru stated that the new party will be all inclusive in that it will embrace both winners and losers by moving away from the winner takes it all notion. Contrary to what used to happen in the past where losers would be in the political cold until the next elections the alliance has new ideas of engaging them. “The party nomination rules will seek to circumvent this problem by ensuring that the losers in the nomination process, having achieved a threshold of votes, would be incorporated at various levels of appointive positions in keeping with their qualifications so that no leader, able and willing to serve the people is excluded,” he added. He said his new party was of the view that the country must emerge from the coming elections stronger and more united than ever and that they will spare no effort in ensuring this happens.www.standardmedia.co.ke/?categoryID=0

Uhuru Kenyatta is the wealthiest Kenyan. We can debate how that wealth was acquired. Many will agree that this wealth is similar to those of the nouveau rich Russia oligarchs who grabbed state wealth as the USSR disintegrated: Uhuru's money is the product of years of grabbing, insider dealing and outright state sanctioned theft.
Really, if it walks like a duck, smells like duck, quacks like a duck... then its a duck. Uhuru is the link between Kenyatta (son), Moi (protege) and Kibaki (heir apparent). He is the embodiment of our terrible history and legacy of tribalism, favouritism, plunder and blunder. To break that vicious cycle we must stop him.
His wealth is a very good reason why he must not be the president of this country. You see, his main stimulus, his main imperative, his very leit motif is to protect his wealth and those of bourgeois who have accumulated at the expense of the poor majority.
This is not mere populist rhetoric. It is at the heart of Kenya's survival. 1000 MRC's will spring up the day after Uhuru is elected because they will be proitesting the inequality that Uhuru represents.
This will be a main theme at the elections. We want somebody with the pedigree and mindset to understand suffering. Not the scion of a ruling class family with zero appreciation of the suffering of the proletariat; the walahois, the poor wanjikus.
We will reject Uhuru outright.

as if there isn't enough confusion in the 'G7' house already, eugene now comes out to assure his supporters that he's still in the race and claims he isn't uhuru's running mate.
what was he thinking giving such a speech at another presidential candidate's party launch? well, he must be the greatest fool or he's fooling his supporters big time.

Kamalet, Aha, There is a name they used to call it, when a manufacturer markets the same product under different names so as to have a monopoly in reality, while giving the consumer the illusion of diverse choice! In this case a ploy Kenyans have seen through as in the advent of the term Uhuruto! one heart two heads! A double act. And see how fast Eugene Wamalwa has heard to re-iterate that he has not thrown his towel in the ring and surrendered to Uhuru! He was surprised to find himself being described in social sites as Uhuru's chamber-maid! That seems to be a propaganda nightmare! But he is going to a good school. The school of reality. The best teacher! Now it is up to him to learn. www.standardmedia.co.ke/?articleID=2000058626&story_title=Wamalwa: I am not Uhuru’s running mate

Whereas money might have played a major role in the success of the event, I do not think it was all about money. Rather it was more to do with a very careful thought process of piecing together little ideas for such a huge success.
Uhuru once again demonstrated why he is head and shoulders above other candidates in both resource mobilization organizational skill. If he can put his mind together as president in similar fashion, then Kenyans can rest assured they could have one of the very innovative leaders.
I think congratulations are in order for Muthamaki on this one, he's raised the bar a little for some the candidates.

Once again that is an attempt at trying to recreate what Obama did in the past. Obama was not the wealthiest candidate and did not use his tribe's endorsement as a springboard to Democrats nomination. Obama is no mass land grabber or a manipulator of MPs. Obama is not a co-accused of the worst possible crimes under the sun at the ICC. Unless Kenyans will vote with their minds closed to all these atrocities, I do not see them voting for Uhuru however much he tries to sugar coat his campaign with money.

Uhuru had it all right from the start of his life: two doting parents who pampered him (those were pre-Viagra days, and he was considered a "miracle baby"), a kleptocrat father who handed it all to him, his father's partners in crime who treated like a prince, and so forth. All he had to do was keep his nose clean, and he would have gone places. Instead, he chose that path of iniquity: booze, pot, and a downward spiral that ended with his partnering with the nastiest of the nastiest, to unleash terror on his fellow citizens. Completely went to the dogs.
His little performance being discussed here will soon be forgotten, and, once the ICC gets really going again, will merely be noted as the last dance of a finished man---a fine dance, perhaps, but nevertheless a final one. Uhuru is one of those of whom wazees will later shake heads and say, "he could have been somebody".
