www.standardmedia.co.ke/?articleID=2000072106&story_title=Leaders-challenge-plan-to-reserve-Migori-seatLet me refer you to this quagmire in Migori, and the so called Isebania declaration which reserved the senate seat to the Kuria people. It was interpreted by others as zawadi and enticement, to seduce Machoge and cement his defection to the ODM, hopefully bringing in Kuria votes from the TNA umbrella, as far as ethnic maths go. The reverse calculation being the Luos, ho wever angry, would acquiesce in the long term, for the benefit of their own high ticket! But something has backfired --not only the threatened court cases reported, but the registration of voters from the Luo backyard has stalled in this county, and is now officially the lowest in all Nyanza. The young are saying: if the seats are already privatised, allotted and sold, what is the purpose of voting anyway? Others are reported to have put a price on registering as a voter. No pay no registration no voting: gonya sani, chuth ber! .
The reaction of the establishment has been harsh: before transacting any business in the area, even traveling, loyalists have been mobilised to inspect possession of voter card. Raising even more tension. Of course it is understood there is only one candidate in this region!
But Siaya will not be that cynical I think, that is, dissilusioned folks will not demand payment to endorse the MOUs. But a great din of the stop-thief-kind has been generated immediately in the wake of the alleged allocation of seats between Orengo and Oburu! A man called Ochanda, and another named JT Okinda, both gubernatorial candidates, are none too pleased and are talking about the big-guns sabotaging the principle of free choice, and attempting to thwart the peoples will. They are consulting on their options. --It could of course be a ploy to inflate the buy-off price, since rates for Joe Donde's climb-down are being quoted.
From my neighbours across, I hear Oburu may benefit from the balance sentiment --see my earlier post on this: Senator goes to the UGA axis [Ugenya-Gem-Alego], then Governor goes to the BoRa axis [Bondo-Rarieda]. Oburu is then in a better finance and family position to ... intimidate fellow Bondo-Rarieda competitors, even if he is universally a recognized dead wood. But he is not a guaranteed win like Orengo.
In anycase Oburu had no choice, since against Orengo he has no chance. He has the most to gain by an MOU where the age-old politics of patronage and clientelism reduce voting to a formality of endorsing already decided candidates.
I heard once: War is too important to be left to generals. Then politics is too important to be left to politicians. We can say election results are too important to be left to voters!

;D ;D expect a lecture on Luo land politics Dam right, Reporter! And you, this is what you should expect if I catch you not paying attention to my best thing since sliced bread lectures --(I am quoting my beloved Brother Einstein in his weakly sarcasm!) ;D I will subject you to my favourite punishment for sleepy and lazy female students: yaani, abiro miyi apat e siandani! rap tap! rap tap! This does not mean a pat on your bat; but it means I will pull your ears until they become long enough like those of a hare. Then shall they hear well, such lectures as only I can deliver! ... on the difference between waragi and chang'aa highs! which is where I am at my best! ;D
