Premier Tayyip Recep Erdoganof Turkey has been in power for ten years, and is gone stale. he took a wrong turn and the younger generation in his big cities are saying HELL NO!
Businessmen in his court have hijacked his head, and his government agreed to have Taksim, the most famous and popular park in their city Istanbul, ---Say an Uhuru Park equivalent, be destroyed and replaced by a MEGA shopping mall. That is progress he said. And there would be a centerpiece Mosque included in the complex to make it a work of Allah, his name be praised.
Suspicion is both TaksIm Park and Square ---symbols of secular Turkey, places where, unbothered, carefree young Turks can snog and smooch and kiss and fornicate in daylight in vision of whole publics, things which are frowned on by the other half of the AK-Party supporting conservative population,---- would be erased from the surface of Istanbul by the rage of the Islamic movement now in power.

Days on end, the ruling Islamic conglomerate set the police loose on the demonstrating mass, which had originally started as an OCCUPY camp of tents. >2500 were arrested in what is called the greatest battle in the city ever since the second world war. A few are reported dead, but the government has issued a denial.
THE TURKISH MEDIA AT OMERTA, AND THE PUBLIC BACKLASH.
Perhaps the greatest casuality will be the Turkish official and mainstream Media. 5 days long they blacked out the greatest battle in public order in the biggest city of the country. They refused to cover the biggest internal and external story of their land! ----It would be like CITIZEN, NATION, K24, KTN, ALL KBC, ALL decided week-long epic battles in the center of Nairobi city involving 1/2 a million citizens is not newsworthy! even in passing!
But it is a new world and the battle was live on all world major channels: CNN, BBC, AL-Jaz ETC. All available in Turkey on satelite or cable. Enraged at this official censorship, riots exploded in at least 10 other cities across the country.
Now the backlash on journalists: Reports indicate in many places the official and pro-'establishment' journalists have been attacked, their cars, gear and offices vandalised. --If they wont report the big news what are they there for? In a few places, up to last week star-reporters for major channesl have been beaten and roughed up.
It would be as if Julie Gichuru suddenly needed body-guards, not to protect her from admirers and stalkers like some of you here on Jukwaa, but from irate Kenyans and lynch-mobs, angry because she refused to report occupy parliament.
A very ugly faultline has been revealed in Turkey, and it shows the heat beneath the economic super-performance of the past decade which has established Turkey as an emerged economy.
So what is new at a go:
1. Recep Tayyip Erdogan's regime has been extremely repressive on secular Turks. There has been a purge in the military, police, and civil service which used to be an ATA-TURK bastion. Ataturk ---FatherTurk, is the founder of Modern Turkey, and was a radical, westernised secularist who effectively defined Islam as Turkey's chain to the middle-ages, and needed severance.
The regime of the AK Party of President-Elect Tayyip Erdogan, former mayor of Istanbul, the historic Constantinople of the Eastern Roman Empire, can be seen as the historic revenge of the conservatives after tens of decades of determinde secular suppression.
2. Arab Spring example. If your government plans major changes and it has not consulted you, then let it go to hell.
3. Failure to live up to Neutrality in Syria. Seen to have been absorbed into the NATO agenda, whereupon the civil war spilled into Turkey with several bomb blasts, one of which cost 40 lives. And because of the 'ethnic faultilines of the republic' suddenly Turkish nationalism is unsure.
4. Turkish-Kurdistan is changing. In fact the whole issue of Kurdish nationalism in the neighbourhood which used to be the bogeyman is no longer so to a young generation of Turks who, when asked, thought Turkish Islamic government was a greater danger to their future than Kurdish nationalist aspirations, which is secular. ----Run-away Trade with oil-rich Iraqi Kurdistan has changed minds. Make money not war.
NB: The president, seeing occupy solidarity demonstrations by the Turkish diaspora from Europe to the USA, came to adress the nation on a riot which he had not acknowledged! Young Turks had a field day on facebook depicting him as the deaf pig that never hears itself fart, which it ever does! The word is, post your last insults before Turkish facebook is blocked!
