No one would have taken anyone seriously who said the eating and corruption most Kenyans have practically come to accept as part of their lives would stop with the assuming of office by Jubilee. Indeed, it's precisely for this reason many vehemently oppose Raila and would never want him to become president because they rightly fear he'll be the first president to seriously take head-on the rampant corruption and insider dealings in our government. The Standardis reporting that Francis Kimemia who should have no job in any government that wants to be taken seriously as standing for change and not status quo, the man who is acting as though our constitution is a nuisance and with Uhuru's acquiesce and in this case without any legal authority, has ordered the forcible moving of ministry civil servants from Jogoo House to a building owned by a well known and close Jubilee billionaire. Talk about the arrogance of power! The Government will pay the building owner and supporter at least Sh88.9 million a year, excluding Value Added Tax (VAT) for the lease, this not including the added cost of renovating the offices and furnishing them. VAT is calculated at 16 per cent, which means the final lease cost alone would be Sh103.13 million shillings annually. This brings the total monthly rent per square feet to Sh8.6 million. Let the eating continue until Kenyans one day wake up and totally reject this level of eating and corruption.

Did you see that "the good government of his excellency" is sending MPs to China to buy chairs for their offices? If you want your MPs to live the prestigious lives they deserve, what else, but to send them on a window shopping tour of Beijing? I mean, who knows how to shop better than the MP, and if you want to buy a table from Beijing, in this day and age, how else would you do it, but pack up and go to Beijing? Kenyan MPs are not like politicians in some other countries who just wait for other people with fancy titles like "Procurement Officers" to go buy benches for them. The eating continues!

Mank
Every five years when you queue to vote in some charlatan as you leader, you really should know what you are getting yourself into. At the last election, I could not even be bothered to vote for anyone else apart from the presidential vote and the reason behind that decision was not because I thought 'my candidate' Uhuru was the best candidate, but for me presented the best option to having the other 'character' be our president. So I voted against that character rather than for Uhuru.
Our MPs just like the thieves in the civil society world have this "kwani ni ya mama yako" attitude to everything and that explains why none can bat an eyelid when deciding to take your tax shilling for window shopping and even more when they actually decide to buy! You must wonder why companies of the world produce glossy brochures of their products as that should save our country loads of money in such situations!
Remember the phrase: "Kwani ni ya mama yako" and .....move on!

Indeed, Kamale, that's the uniting tragedy of the republic. Its a buggy buggy world for us. Sheep are entrusted to the fox for herdsman! But most here on Jukwaa will argue that we would have been better off if we voted "the other character."

Uhuru, Ruto home turfs bag top jobs in energy industryTop jobs in state-owned firms in the energy sector are now occupied by executives from the home area of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy. KenGen, Kenya Power, Rural Electrification Authority (REA) and Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) have appointed interim CEOs following the exit of their top brass with individuals from the Rift Valley and Central regions. KenGen tapped Simon Ngure on June 27 to replace Eddy Njoroge while REA last week replaced Zachary Ayieko with Ng’ang’a Munyu — both appointees with roots in Central Kenya, the home turf of President Kenyatta. The Rift Valley has benefited with the appointments of Ben Chumo and Charles Tanui as interim boss of Kenya Power and KPC respectively following the exit of Joseph Njoroge and Selest Kilinda. The two populous regions voted overwhelmingly for President Kenyatta’s Jubilee Coalition in the March 4 elections — a move that saw Mr Kenyatta appoint the Cabinet and the principal secretary of the Energy and Petroleum ministry from Rift Valley and Central. Davis Chirchir is the Cabinet Secretary while Mr Njoroge, who served as Kenya Power CEO since 2007, was appointed Energy principal secretary. The search for substantive CEOs of the parastatals is set to give Mr Chirchir an opportunity to appoint preferred managers to run the cash-rich firms as the balance of power shifts in Kenya’s energy industry. The process of getting permanent replacements will be keenly watched, especially the regions where the executives will come from, in a market that is used to confirming those acting in parastatals top jobs. The President has maintained that his government will severe the practice of distributing State jobs to political followers and tribesmen despite concerns that the Cabinet is dominated by persons from Rift Valley and Central regions. Top jobs in KenGen, Kenya Power and KPC are the most coveted among State-owned firms given that they control multi-billion shilling contracts. Last year, they generated a combined sales volume of Sh77.5 billion and Sh20.3 billion profit. The recruitments will be guided by the boards but Mr Chirchir and Mr Njoroge will play a bigger role on who runs the energy sector parastatals. The boards, which are dominated by state appointees, are ideally expected to forward three names to Mr Chirchir to pick his preferred candidate. A debate has been raging as to whether the government’s power should be restricted to appointing directors or State-owned listed companies like Kenya Power and KenGen should be run like any other parastatals where ministers meddle in the appointment of CEOs and managers. The new bosses in the firms are also expected to attract attention both within the very top level of government and in the private sector, especially among deal makers eyeing a piece of the multi billion shillings projects which the parastatals have lined up. The new boss at KPC will be expected to guide the replacement of existing pipeline linking Mombasa to Nairobi, which has outlived its 30-year life span and is prone to ruptures. Plans to build a new $300 million (Sh25.5 billion) fuel pipeline from the Mombasa port to Nairobi have been on the radar for the past five years and KPC is floating a tender for the construction of a bigger pipeline. Its former managing director, Mr Kilinda, was dismissed on the grounds that during his reign he hired three siblings — a sister who is a telephonist, a brother who is a welder, and a sister who is a clerical officer. Kenya Power is seeking to spend Sh128 billion over the next five years to revamp its ageing electricity distribution network. Its CEO quit to join the government and was replaced by human resources director, Mr Chumo. KenGen is also working on multi-billion shilling power plants. Mr Njoroge of KenGen chose to retire midstream in a five-year term and was replaced by the regulatory affairs director, Mr Ngure. Mr Ayieko, 58, opted not to seek another terms at REA and was replaced in an interim capacity by Ng’ang’a Munyu, currently the head of corporate planning at the authority. www.nation.co.ke/business/news/Uhuru-Ruto-home-turfs-bag-top-jobs-in-energy-industry-/-/1006/1913118/-/18kcdhz/-/index.html

In a recent column noting my take on Uhuruto's first 100 days in office, I surmised, "While they may as yet meet that objective, their trajectory in terms of policy formulation and implementation is headed in the same predictable direction of inaction, petty politics like trying to figure how to “tame” Raila and all talk, talk with nothing serious to show. - See more at: Evaluating Uhuruto's First 100 Days In OfficeI actually had "other than status quo" at the end but cut it; I might have as well left it because it's true and we'll see more examples of this such as this keeping of plum jobs within the extended "house" in the weeks and months to come. I really hope not as this is one area I had already given Uhuru the benefit of doubt that he will surprise everyone and break from his predecessors on this overloading with annoying and unjust tribal appointments to key positions. We should start seeing cases in court challenging these appointments, if anything to put them on the spot and see what they have to say to justify the impossible.

State House? What is that much ivory doing in State House? I waited to get an explanation from the news reports, but wapi. How Guards Stole Ivory From State House
Two security officials colluded to smuggle ivory worth millions of shillings from State House, Mombasa, in one of the most intriguing theft cases involving government employees. An investigation into the mysterious disappearance of the ivory has found that the plan to steal the prized items from one of the most heavily guarded premises in the coastal city was hatched over a long period.
The April incident saw a General Service Unit constable and a caretaker sacked after investigators concluded they had masterminded the theft.
The sacked GSU officer told police investigators that the theft was hatched by the caretaker who brought him into the plan when he (caretaker) found it difficult to remove the ivory out of the highly-guarded compound without being detected.
The officer claimed he facilitated the deal to understand how the theft syndicate worked and arrest the caretaker and the buyer. But police did not buy this argument.
To nail the two, CID officers confiscated a mobile phone from the caretaker and found several short text messages he had sent to and received from a man believed to have facilitated the sale of the ivory. They disguised themselves as the caretaker and sent text messages to the broker promising a new deal. They also wanted to find out if there were buyers ready to purchase more ivory.
“But unfortunately the broker realised there was a difference in tone between previous messages and the new ones being sent by detectives and disappeared,” a police source said. The man also discarded the phone and the line.
A senior GSU officer charged with securing State Houses and Lodges across the country told the Sunday Nation that more than five pieces of ivory were still missing. Some of the stolen ivory is believed to be part of the consignment seized at the port of Mombasa last week. District Criminal Investigations Officer in charge of the Port, Mr Mwera Mukuri, however, declined to confirm the reports.
“The investigation is ongoing and I will not divulge details because it will be prejudicial,” said Mr Mukuri, adding that “we are yet to establish the source but have obtained crucial leads.” Independent sources, however, confirmed that four pieces of ivory stolen from State House were among those seized.
“The four pieces have unique features and look older compared with the rest of the haul,” said an officer. Another senior police officer, who is privy to the investigation, said the stolen ivory pieces included one weighing about 100 kilos that went missing from an office designated for the First Lady. “It is the largest of them all and suspected to be the first one to have been taken out,” said the officer. Two smaller pieces that went missing from the President’s office were found hidden underground within the premises of the State House building.www.nation.co.ke/News/How-guards-stole-ivory-from-State-House/-/1056/1921462/-/h85i2b/-/index.html

Seriously $80,000 for food for 5 days? Is there no food in China? Living here in this very diverse city, I have had the pleasure of eating food from all over the world. I say the chinese are right up there with their amazing and varied cuisine. No, you don't have to chow dog like they do, but do Kenyans need to pay that much for a man to eat? Contrast that with the hunger most kenyans endure all their lives. UHURU TAKES LAMB CHOPS ON CHINA TRIP President Uhuru Kenyatta's catering team that flew to China prior to his departure on Wednesday morning took his favourite food along with them. Lamb chops, beef steak, fish and Fanta orange were in the travelling bags of the advance team. Unlike his predecessor, Mwai Kibaki, who steered clear of red meat preferring chicken and fish, Uhuru does not like poultry. Sources close to the catering department at State House revealed the President does not leave the country without his chefs. One caterer who does not work at State House but has in the past travelled with the former and current president said it is difficult to find the foods that Uhuru prefers in Asia. “We used to carry food whenever we learned that we cannot find it in the host country. China is tricky and the President's team must have carried his favourite lamb chops, which are always served with mukimo, roast potatoes, rice or ugali,” he said. On Tuesday morning, a senior government official is reported to have made a call to The Stanley hotel to order the food. “Please include lots of fish,” the official is said to have instructed. The the total amount of the food ordered, and which was billed in US dollars, came to $80,000 (Sh7 million). The source said since Uhuru was sworn in, he served him dinner once before State House commissioned its full food and beverage unit. “Uhuru takes tea in his house in the morning. I have never served him tea for breakfast. Perhaps, he prefers to eat his wife's food,” he said. He said the State House's food and beverage department can serve a maximum of 250 people. If there are more guests than that, the official caterers, The Sarova Stanley, take over. Kibaki liked to drink Keringet water or mango or cocktail juice after a meal, our source said. “For breakfast, President Kibaki loved Weetabix cereal, croissants, tea and fruits. Kibaki is mindful of his health. We would bear this in mind when cooking for him," he said. Yesterday, the management at The Stanley said they are excited to be the official caterers of State House. “It is an honour to cater for the President. You must be consistent and be sure of what you are doing. There is no room for mistakes. We did catering during President Kibaki's time and we will also do it well for President Uhuru," said Ben Katungi, the hotel's food and beverage manager. He declined to comment on the Uhuru's menu for the China trip. The President's official visit to China, which runs from August 19 to 23, will be dominated by discussions on business and investment. A business delegation of more than 60 people will join Uhuru on this leg of his tour. Nairobi Governor Dr Evans Kidero jetted out yesterday to join the President's entourage. While in China, Uhuru will sign deals on a power transmission project for Nairobi as well as other agreements on economic and technical cooperation. The President is also expected review a number of projects under discussion between the governments of Kenya and China. Key among these are the $2.5 billion construction of a standard gauge railway from Mombasa to Malaba and the $1.75 billion multi-purpose dam, which is central to regional development plans. On his way to China, Uhuru yesterday visited Russia where he encouraged more Russian businesspeople to invest in Kenya. He said Kenya is strategically located as a gateway to the East and Central Africa region. The President said due to its strategic location, Kenya has emerged as the regional economic, trading and investment frontier. He was speaking in Moscow during a meeting with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Moscow. “I welcome Russian investors to take advantage of our strategic location as the gateway to the East African Community and the common market for Eastern and Southern Africa – which has a combined market potential of over 400 million people,” he said. Uhuru also hosted a luncheon for the Kenyan team to the World Athletics Championships. He pledged more support for the Kenyan sportsmen and women. Saying Kenyans are proud of their achievements, the President termed Kenyan athletes as gracious ambassadors of the country. He said every Kenyan celebrates their success. www.the-star.co.ke/news/article-132397/uhuru-takes-lamb-chops-china-trip

Also, i have this belief that unless you're a child, a small one at that, if you eat you can also cook. So don't worry about the wife and cooking. Women weren't put on this earth to cook for your tired asses. Ati he did it to save Kenyans $$. It would have been cheaper to indulge himself in Chinese food. You make excuses for your master, I will call bullshit out whenever I see it especially when people are starving because of their crap.

I hear you kathure. :-)
I was just trying the other side of the coin to see what the explanation would be. Lakini nyama ya china you can get from the market thinking its beef kumbe ni punda. Hehehehe.
8 million shillings for five days is quite a tidy sum though. Kwani hiyo nyama ni gold plated. Hehehe

Contrast that with the hunger most kenyans endure all their lives. UHURU TAKES LAMB CHOPS ON CHINA TRIP www.the-star.co.ke/news/article-132397/uhuru-takes-lamb-chops-china-trip There is a story often told with glee in Germany, an anecdote of legend. Why the Germans insisted on a dutchman [Wim the Calculator Duisenberg] to be the first head of the ECB, and why again during the Euro-crisis, the Germans hauled in another inexperienced dutchman [Dr. Graveflowers] to be Mr. Euro. A long long time ago, during the reconstruction after the2nd world war, the dutch had a Prime Minister named Willem Drees, the personification of economisation. He was so mean, so thrifty, such a miser in the management of public funds, that it was his regime that created the data that finally launched the modern branch of economics in which Mank specialises: ECONOMETRICS. The dutch [1969] nobel price winner Jan Tinbergen is credited with the origination of econometry. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Tinbergen Dr. Miser and Dr. Stingy [that is Drees and Tinbergen] developed a government system of accounting and economic management where waste and theft were zero! One of its greatest instruments in the forensic bureau of government calculations and models, backed by one of the hottest rackets in statistics [anecdotes galore on what a dutch accountant must do if he wants to cook books or conduct a swindle!] Legend goes when the American realised this during the Marshal plan, they shipped shiploads and shiploads of cash to Holland without counting , trusting it all to Dr. Stingy and Dr. Miser. And the Americans did not come to rue the day. That is why the Germans to date always want a man from the Tinbergen Institute in Rotterdam, fortified with stinginess and miserliness, hovering around Euro-treasuries. Willem Drees asked his nutritionists to design for him the minimal biologically necessary diet to sustain him. In current terms, it would mean Uhuru Kenyatta costs the taxpayer $5/day for food. The public treasury does not buy alcohol, nor pay entertainement allowance for her president, nor state visitors! Dr. Henry Rotich went to Harvard and pays $80,000 for a 5 day meal?Forgive me gentleme if I urinate on your prestigious Harvard. I work with guys who went to Tinbergen in Rotterdam, Frankfurt and Mannheim. they would never pay anybody even $1000 public money for a week's meal! That would be the greeks and Italians and the rest of the PIIGS of the Zeuro-Zone who need BAILOUTS, who would pay those Kenyan rates! Poor Ouru Kenyatta! somebody need help this boy from himself!

I guess what I am getting at is judging the character of the man from the simplicity of his food and the closeness to his wife rather than the 80 grand it took our nation to sustain a presidential trip. The money didn't leave the country. Rather, t here is potential money coming in. Here is another take on business, on the trip to china! Ivory out, money in!

Friend Jakaswanga, I may just fall in love with historic Germany as a price for loving your writings. You seem to have no difficulties finding a historic figure from that land of Hitler from whom we'd be delighted to transplant patches of DNA to these man eaters that are our (mis)leaders. I din't imagine there was much to love for a land that gave the world Hitler, and still speaks aghastabjag#$&4bjen . As for urinating on the Harvard prestige, I dropped from the list of those who would be offended long time ago ... that was when I got informed that some shamus (not naming names) from the county of yours truly also wields papers in claim of a Harvard experience. But let's go easy on the institution - great institutions give unworthy Africans the opportunity to be part of them for many varied reasons. As for paying a bill of $80,000 for 5 day meals, I would demand some evidence. Methinks that even not considering the time the body needs to deal with what its fed so it can create room for more, there is just not enough time for a man to eat that much in 5 days. Not even if they carried someone to go catch a fish every time the His Excellency felt hungry or just bored. Some preliminary evidence I would ask for is the weight of his excellency taken on day 1 and on day 5 . For that kind of feasting I expect to see a good difference in those two readings. When I first read this story I held myself back from commenting because I thought "sure this is a prank, and the next thing to be posted will be its burst." Now I find myself wondering "what is it about us Kenyans that makes it reasonable for anyone to feel comfortable feeding us this kind of hogwash?". If we must live in corruption, I sure prefer that of Kamlesh Pattni - it is a little witty and less insulting to the victim.

I suspect that this could be the result of a lost-in-translation piece of advice---that when His Excellency took over, he was told "don't waste the five years; eat as much as you can of Kenya". Even if that is not the case any His Excellency ought to eat well. Very well. Especially given that "president for life" is no longer an option these days, but a Big Man still must be Big. The problem might be that some people think he eats the kind of lamb you'll find foraging in a typical Kenyan village. That wouldn't do. Prowling around Google to see what kind of lamb chops he might be eating, it appears that he is very mindful of Kenya's economic situation and has been very modest, considering that it's a Presidential Stomach. He has wisely settled for something between what you and I eat and what is truly worth of an His Excellency. He could, for example, have gone for this $2million-per-sheep number (in China, actually): www.odditycentral.com/funny/worlds-most-expensive-sheep-is-worth-over-2-million.htmlor perhaps No. 5 or No. 8 here: www.bornrich.com/expensive-livestock.htmlor maybe these kebabs: www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3614759/Worlds-most-expensive-kebab-costs-750.htmlI don't know about the Fanta, though. I also don't know about the "China is tricky" claim: from my direct observations, any kind of food you can find in Kenya is available in a large Chinese city but made in a thousand delightful variations. One would think that with all the ivory and rhino-horn that Kenyans are sending over the Chinese would make sure that the Kenyan president was well fed. Come to think of it, food pays a huge part in Chinese hospitality; so I wonder when His Excellency will get the chance to eat his $80,000 lamb chops. Perhaps for breakfast or for between-meals snacks? The only thing Kenyans ought to be worrying about is this: who is doing the cooking of all that fine Kenyan lamb?

... His Excellency ought to eat well... Fine! Alright! Let him eat well. But let him remember that me, being of humble abilities, always want to see results. I don't take it kindly that His Excellency just pooped away $80k in 5 days. If he eats well, I want to see it more than be told. I want to see a little more flesh for my part of that $80k... then I can brag to the Ambithinia(yes Jakaswanga, that's what my grandma called them) above, and Tanga na Nyika below, that we take better care of our Lord. Those to the north would sure know that as a virtue, and situation being what it is, for my part of that $80k I am just looking for any kind of recognition. I will search in China if I have to, but I think they wont be pleased to offer any on this topic. Those people, surely, have great cheap food and this story tarnishes their fame.

Mank, Otishotish, Hear me on something here. At home, I of course lost the battle for the TV-remote long ago, so you will catch me with the family watching HOLLYWOOD TV ----the lives of the stars and the rich and the famous, before going back to Naijas [Nollywood movies]. From the rich and famous programs, I know meals can come at $1M a course per person. Culinary Caviar, special mushrooms, vintage cognac 300 years old, squid chops from 5km below the ocean surface! and ambrosia from heaven specially prepared by God's angelic (rofl)cooks! ----Africans like Mobutu Sese-Seko and Omar Bongo of oily Gabon used to order such for their daughter's weddings! So yes, meals can be quite expensive! Our caveat is: when the public is picking up the bill, then mean and lean is the motto. By the way once Super Diva Mariah Carey once let a concord fly from Paris to Los Angeles to fetch a packet of her favourite tea, and American water in a thermo-can! But it was her money she was spending! Never has a cup of tea been so expensive in human history! But as a public-paid figure, Mr. Kenyatta already the richest man in Kenya, spending that money in 5 days, merely qualifies himself as an immoral parasite, spounging on Wanjiku with impunity. Those who know in public hospitals infants die because their parents have no 3k to afford intravenous drip to save them from a ROTA comma, nor a few hundred ksh. to afford ORSs, will know a little bit less gluttony and parasitic mentality on the treasury by our top elite, can save many infant lives in a tax-base where a signficant percentage survives on less than $2/day!But because this prezzo was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he needs someone else to sit his head up, so that he understands the micro-economics of his tax payers! As it is, he is stripping them tot the bone. That is criminal greed. Agreed.

Jakaswanga:
In African "culture" (if this is the right word) and history, it is generally understood that what belongs to the people and the country belongs to the Big Man in the Big House. What's more the African hoi polloi generally expect Big men to act like Big Men.
When some worthy MPs accompanied a certain duo to the Hague, they laughed at their Dutch counterparts for riding bicycles. It's not hard to see why: in Kenya they get taxpayer-funded grants to buy luxury cars, as Big Men deserve.

Yes indeed, sometime back a Dutch Prime Minister came to Brussels for a Euro conference. As those from the South went to top hotels to eat like your big men, the Dutch PM and those from Scandinavia dived into their coat pockets and briefcases, to produce home-made slices of loaf, super-market oranges, juice/water and mini yoghurts. And they did not leave their working desks! a working lunch! You have to see it to believe it! ---Even Jakaswanga's working lunch at mama Mbogas or at Hotel Lwang'ni at Kisumu pier far outstrips the working lunches of the Swedish, Finnish, and Danish PM's combined! NB: Hotel Alwang'ni serves per person, fish bigger than one side of your wive's buttock! Even if she is one with!

My MP rides his bike every day when in his constituency. And it's not like he can't afford a car. Anyways, it's no wonder that kenyan people with $$ mostly all look like teletubbies. But at least the tubbies are cute. See.

Kathure:
Kenyan BIG MEN believe that they must show that they are BIG. That a person might have very good reasons for walking or cycling---and there are many good reasons---is something they cannot imagine. Look SMALL when you are BIG? No, no, no; that simply won't do. This attitude is expressed in all things and explains why some end up in dire straits even after robbing the taxpayers for five straight years.
