The face of the youth who have taken over Nairobi!
They re described as BLING-BLING. Poster girl BlingBling. And they have supposedly taken over a city which one of Kenya's best literary minds, Ngugi de Thiong'o, described as a small island of posh floating in a sea of slums. That ominous critique would imply Nairobi needs what all great cities have undergone, before they metamorphosed themselves from concentrations of mass filth to post-modernist masterpieces.
European cities like London give interesting lessons, from the Charles Dickens-documented 18th century dinghy plague-death concentration camp to world capital. Under a conscious industrial world class, they embarked on unprecedented industrial scale construction of public housing, public transport, public schools, public recreation (parks), public hygiene (water and healthcare and power), which, in the case of London, was a 200year vision plan. (Hehe! NAZI Berlin had 1000 year plan! Moscow, 500 under Stalin! Paris not far behind!)
That is why when you go to these monumental cities, as decrepit as they are nowadays, you will travel more underground from A-B if time is not on your hands. Above ground, it is the tram or light rail. Cars are for those who have time to sit still in traffic jams and fiddle with their smart gadgets, likely idle richman's kids of the blingbling playboy lifestyle, shopaholic mpango wa kandos, or bored trophy wives of the super rich. Those who have been to New York or London can attest to the competitive capitalist speed with which those who have work to do, move cut throat. If own car, then like Maggie Thatcher, you arrive at your city desk before 4 am, and leave 11 pm!
A capital city must have capital behaviour, where work is done. And blingbling, where the made-money is spent.
These micro-economic details are important lessons, because Nairobi is destined to be the capital of East and Central Africa, a BRI capital nexus if that Chinese OBOR plan lifts up. If that is the 50 year MODEST plan, then in the young taking the city over, one must be able to discern the consciousness of the new time. Not just at the entertainment end, but mostly at the productive end. The workman's end, or the working ladies end of course.
Bling Bling is a good sign I think. But it is entertainment. After work. During working hours that bling lifestyle is for bored, kept wives and richly minted mistresses, and of course drug-sampling weirdoes in the film and music industry ---like Hollywood. The men who run the city, shove the sh!t, must have iron vision ---ruthlessly purge the mafia and corruption cartels like Kee Yuan did in Singapore, and the Chinese communists in Shanghai. Corruption cartels inflate the costs of city services, these cartels also precipitate shoddy (construction) jobs. (study Italian cities and New York before Mafia-buster Rudi Giuliani). A capital city aims to authenticate a capital environment where capital minds can do capital work. Captain a welfare consumer empire of 200M for instance (Congo, Sudan, EAC, Malawi and Somalia!)
Policing a 15M people city with 80% of inhabitants in slums hawking sh!t, will require a militarized killer police force to keep a lid on things. Such a killer force begins to develop entrepreneurial autonomy, hiring themselves out for kills, preying on the middle and higher classes for ransom ---because that is where the money is. (They moonlight as business protectors kidnapper finders, the insider ransom business being very lucrative. They also branch out into bodygaurd services to Every businessman: take or die the next day, accidentally caught in a police shoot-out, or, like Jacob Juma, unsolved murder. Many Latin American cities offer this scenario perfectly).
As Nairobi goes bling, there is something else it has to do. It has to go places! No brainier the stations on that route.
1. Sonko is right ---gotta be cleaner than Chigali! (hopefully without an equally nasty despot!)
2. Let there be no slums! ---the way those post-world-war II European mayors re-built their air-power and artillery-ravaged cities in just 4 years! Waawu, cities reduced to rubble rat holes, makes me convinced a slumless Nairobi can be achieved in 3 years, technology having revolutionised labour in the meantime, China loans begging.
But there is a catch to this story: there is something called calibre, the calibre of decision-making. The new commissioner for the reconstruction of the smithereened Hitler capital, Berlin, made a simple decision for instance: of the American Marshall Plan loan, not EVEN A SINGLE CENT would fail to be accounted for. All cents would be used most efficiently.
That is a simple decision, a simple resolve. It is even simplistic. But if you take stock of the ferocity of its ruthlessness, the paradigms of its ideological core, you may easily understand why Nairobi, under bling-bling, and Jubilee one-party triumphalism, will disappoint you with continued sh!t. nd should it rain, swimming SUV's and collapsing flats will continue to be your lot! (Debt repayments and corruption will see to that!)
Eh, Mbuvi Sonko and the Blingbling gang, giving you the benefit of doubt, 5 years of honeymoon to make all Nairobi blingbling. Get to work Amigos, it can be done. Let the ruthlessness of Candidate Ngatia be spectre over your heads:
Ngatia: 'Every corrupt official will be hanged with a guitar-wire at Uhuru Park, live in Public!'
Have a nice sunny day folks, will ya!
