Economically speaking, through the notorious formula of primitive accumulation, whose chief instrument is corruption, whereunder we understand theft, graft, embezzlement and misappropriation, our comprador elite enrich themselves to the levels of the international jet-set. And to maintain the trappings of that lifestyle, looting public properties and resources is the chief strategy in their policies. This has been the general experience of half a decade of post-colonial reality in Afrika, and specifically, our Kenya. And we shall see, that regardless of super-human growth rates enacted in the last decade of ‘’Afrika embrace China’’, the socio-political fabric of Afrika remains very brittle. The Berlin consensus an ill-fitting costume too.
After the post-colonial elite has thieved itself to societal pre-eminence, the group then faces the second historical problem: class self-perpetuation. --How can they bequeath safety and continuity to their offspring? How can they indulge self-recreation at the top of society, eternally appropriating all the cream?
This is no new problem, and every class that has made it to the top, has faced it, and, historically speaking, there are well established precedents by now: Classical precedents.
Basically, this means they need to fast-track their lineage to the commanding heights of the society. That is the commanding heights of the economy, commanding heights of the state, meaning control of strategic positions (of influence) like the military and security apparatus. They have to establish a dynastic control; have to ‘’naturalise’’ ... [INSTITUTIONALISE!!] their dominance. (And those lower castes at the receiving end of their ‘’quenelle ’’ have to ‘’naturalise’’ .... [CULTURALISE by internalisation] their subjugation. It must take two to tango, otherwise there will be a discordance, a mismatch drama of sorts)
Our tropical parasites have to consolidate their hold on society yes, hahaha, that is an instinctive drive! They have to become royalty, with an ideology of entitlement. They have to manipulate the wheels of rule, rig the game, rig the playing field, such that the result is always they staying at the top. It is an imperial game, the rest and citizenry are figurants. (members of the cast also appearing)
Money can buy power and propel even an inferior prince to the helm, as inDubya Kenya. Otherwise, like M7 of Uganda, a blatant rigging of the military hierarchy will also do, to propel his dim wit son to the top. ---But why was it again, that aristocracy and hereditary entitlement to rule, even if considered divine, became historically redundant?
Me contends the other actor in the grand scheme refused to do the tango along. And the careful choreography jammed. The subjugated declared his arse too tight for all that quenelle, and turned tables. Call it rebellion.
In the wings of dynastic politics in Kenya, by popular jokes, await Gideon Moi, Fidel Odinga, Wamalwas Jimmy Kibakis …., and, if you check the gossip columns of who is marry who, you will of course see the pattern of constellation. They intermarry to seal the oligarchy and monarchical tendency. The younger generations of the super rich and super powerful, limber outside the lines in their bubble, like substitutes warming up waiting for call ins. They are heirs to power and economic fortune, and paradise.
FROM THE PAST TO THE FUTURE
What have we learnt about the most revolutionary class in history? The radical bourgeoisie? The inventors of MODERN capitalism? The renaissance men?
Their fearsome ability to distribute opportunity according to ability in universal suffrage, has destroyed all other systems based on forms of reserved privileges. That political systems still insist on hereditary rather than achieved [meritocratic] rewards or dividends, insist on injustice written in law, is what sets the stage for an inevitable exercise in turmoil. Master and slave enacting their favourite dance. Struggle.
This will be either Marx or his friend Engels: ‘In their drive for profit, even God is a commodity to be sold for profit, or they will discard it! Nations will obey this call to modernise in this image of scientific productivity, or perish! The bourgeoisie aim to unleash the full potential of labour, and woe be upon the class that stands in their path!’
So, originally in Royal Europe and their aristocratic system, top education was the reserve of the nobility, and elite schools the reserve of the select few from the aristocracy, but the bourgeoisie universalised schooling, and forced the children of serfs and stable boys and prostitutes to make their way to study engineering at Cambridge if they had the talent. This was the world upside down, and the old world would fight, fight back, and believers would fight, fight back. I say two world wars in which humanity nearly perished.
NB: No whiteman worth his skin colour was going to accept a negro nor coolie as his equal in class, however intellectually gifted or skilled in labour. That is, no Talibhan is going to have his daughter go to school, however brainy the girl is. And no Brahim [Indian high class] is going to tolerate a dalit [untouchable] as his equal or better, however much facts exist as proof. (Unless gun to throat, like Kennedy JFK did Southern white bigots to have black girls attend racially mixed school)
And, continuing on the psychological cretinism of primitive man in shell-shock under bourgeoisie renaissance bombardment, Banyivanga Wainaina can be be an all brilliant writer of international celebrity he likes, but in official Kenya he remains a lowly queer and, in Uganda, should he appear, a lynch spot!
For the bourgeoisie as a historical class who value only the skill of labour expended, and the quality of the product thus fashioned that shall determine its consumer desirability and market competitiveness, they care shit whether the labour issues out of a dalit, or brahim, or nig-gah, or a honk, or jew, or gentile, or homo. This is the historical ruthlessness of the bourgeoisie which to this day continues to shock humanity beyond fathom. ---Did you know the King of Saudi Arabia does not shake hands with black Saudis? yet he sleeps with black Saudi women? And did you know, that when a certain blackman became the USA's top soldier, and there was a small incident [of prejudice] in a certain Arab country famous for oil, another American top soldier of Jewish ancestry who had had the same problem with the noble Arabs said unto him ... never mind ... (But an event would happen later during the war that still begs question whether revenge had been a motive for a particularly uncharacteristic chilling episode. But that is another story!]
For now, let us give the final example of primitive man in office, denying others their dues because of some inbuilt criteria for discrimination. Women can not be ordained into the priesthood of many sects. Pure superstition. And if God said so? Turn him over and give God the quenelle. ---The bourgeoisie, hell on earth I tell you. You harbour prejudice, you are permanently on the defensive.
So, anyway, the radical bourgeoisie-inspired revolution is obviously not yet complete. There are still countries where few if anybody goes to school. But those are clearly marginalised, dying societies. They are dust clinging to a runaway locomotive. Doomed to be blown off. The rest of us want to go smart-apps, and Samsung is the future. But the engineering it takes, the investment in education, the training and harnessing of talent ….. the educational policy …
And after this long introduction, now I come to Kenya. Always my chief concern Kenya ---however I wander and meander.
WHAT IS THE SCHOOL-FEES IN KENYA? WHAT IS IT AS AN INSTRUMENT?
We will loudly wonder whether tuition fees has become a pre-selection to rig the outcome of dominance. Whether before our very eyes, it is being manipulated into an instrument of comprador self-perpetuation. And because the comprador are historically an inferior seed, we will ask ourselves whether formal education in Kenya is geared toward confining the nation to a dungeon of uncompetitive subservience. Kenya totally under foreign domination, once the system has become the fertile field colonised by local inferior seed. (you know like your software is weak, all manner of malware wreak havoc in your computer)
Strange things have been happening since the release of the KCPE results and the selection process. The so-called national schools --(think Alliance, Mang’u, Maseno, Kabarak etc)-- have hiked their fees to past private college levels. Ksh. 150,000 plus. Nationally reported daily, a Form One entry bill of 80K seems to have put paid to many a brilliant hope of joining the fast track [top schools].
One might have thought bursary’s, CDFs, and the educational kitty of County governments should surely be a fall back position. … But …
Over their dead bodies of course: Your governors are opening embassies in foreign countries; your MCA and county executives are gallivanting around the world in executive jets and hotels; your Mpigs have privatised the CDF to their concubines; and if your remember the example of Prof. Sam Ongeri when he was minister for education and the British gave education relief, graft has cleaned out the reserves! ---In toto! What remains for relief is a pitiance.
I saw reports on the papers this weekend of three suicides. All top brains. One of them a boy who could not raise Mang’u fees.
{#####Actually this whole post is a funeral oratory on his tomb. His suicide inspired it..######)
But, who said 80K is a lot of money? The Form One places in National prestigious schools, the open gateways to public universities, have all been gobbled up, yes, by you know who! In other places they even claim there were computer bugs in the selection software ---much like that bug which was doing math at the IEBC tallying center during the last elections.
So we can surmise
‘They’ have now privatised the high-performing, prestigious, well-equipped and staffed national schools. They have done this by a process of a rigged gate-charge , that is hikingschool fees to establish a financial selection instead of a merit selection. The exclusivity of top schools is now a class phenomenon, not a performance indicator. They have hijacked an important access route. (Originally when a chap went to Alliance, you could back trace him all the way to Primary school in rural nowhere, and find out even then, he was already a brainer).
But now now! That is the social coup. And that is the grave historical mistake of the elite. Because the financial selection means in the main, inferior material will reach the top; inferior material will reach the commanding heights of the land; and if the top of the land is a monopoly of an inferior lot, ---what Wole Soyinka called OF A FEEBLE BREED, they we are doomed to be out-competed by those nations whose elites are capable, risen on merit, forged by open and fiery competition, confident of their abilities and position.
An elite arrived on fair competition, confidence of its abilities, is also more likely to allow competitively fair transitions, and not cling to their privileges when the population says No, like in defeat in fair elections. On the other hand, an inferior elite will insist on maintaining its privileges and position at the top at all costs, because they recognise to quit is to be dashed back to lower castes: so insecure, elections are rigged, loans are rigged, and all is rigged in a festival of primitive accumulation. Bondage, Cronysm, clientelism, lackeysm, patronage and the killing off of initiative rules. A dead end vision.
We now know then, to self-perpetuate, education is identified and recognised as an instrument which, if monopolised in the formal sense, will guarantee familial continuity at the top. ----Funny, the colonial racist regime thought the same: they manufactured a set of discriminatory laws aimed to keep the native in his place: chief among them, literacy was to be highly restricted. In the South in the United States during the height of slavery, a black slave found literate [some taught themselves how to read the bibly] would be punished in some of the terrible ways you will see in the Lupita Nyong’o slave film. ---The eyes gorged out and the tongue cut!
Nowadays times changed: the post-colonial elite in their endeavour to keep their privileges, just hike the school fees, and have only enough good schools operational to take in their own offspring! ---that is the modern method of gorging out eyes and cutting tongues of born-lows (or lower castes) who might otherwise get practical ideas/dreams about social uppity.
This colonisation of the crème of schools by the monied and propertied elite, recreates ‘’aristocratic’’ class behaviour, universally in human history. Doomed in all human history.
A FLASHBACK.
Under the much-documented Pharaoh’s, writing and [calculation] accounts was a divine quality. It was restricted to the blue-bloods only. Common chaff were forbidden from initiation into this divine cult –literacy. This set the stage for an inferior, deteriorating civilisation. It would never industrialise in 4000 years of civilisation! Never invent a single crane to shift boulders to heap up a mountainous Pyramid!
I am just saying Prince Uhuru Kenyatta, or Prince Raila Odinga, or Prince Gideon Moi with their grandiose dreams of industrialisation by 2030, exclusively with their aristocratic lineage in power, are cheats, in effect a pestilence dooming Kenya to an underclass of failed nations, so long as they adopt the Pharaoh model of education where only their inferior offspring goes to the best schools because they can pay!
By the way, Uhuru Muigai himself was deemed not smart enough to run the Kenyatta business empire, nor entrust the family fortune; but strange enough, he is the one the forces that be have delegated to the highest office of the land, to guide vision 2030! Well, methinks global competition is a tough race, (watch how even great countries like France are sliding down), so when your country enters a poor horse, chances are overwhelmingly you loose. You have simply sent prey into the arena of predators. International politics and economic competition between states for survival, is not a game of chance where a decidedly inferior elite can make way.
For starters, Norway is a country of barely 5 million lost souls (that is highly secular, agnostic and atheist). But how many Technical Universities do they have? And have you checked the annual budget per faculty of engineering? Gosh, it is the equivalent of your Kenyan GDP!
Lost souls I said: Now we in Kenya want to build an 18th century Railway Gauge before 2020, and not a single Kenyan engineer can design a calvert on a murram road . Forcing Chirau Mwakwere, then Transport minister, to google up Chinese construction firms ! And how much money does new kids on the block Belio Kipsang and Joshua Kaimenyi of education have for training brick-layers? ---Yes, you go that right! JKUAT = Village Polytechnic.
That budget is how I certify the Kenyan political elite inferior, feeble-minded, and not up to the historical agenda at hand. Devoid of purpose. Uhuruto, Kalonzo Weta and Raila are better off retired to play golf and drink whiskey with their obese wives in county clubs around Africa, where they can re-enact the lives of the gone gentry classes of Europe. While we are still kind to them.
We have of course the option of loosing our tempers, and them facing the wrath.
DID YOU KNOW: One of the arap Moi boys went to Kabarak High School. A strict teacher who insisted he always attend class, had an altercation with him. The teacher was read the law of Kenya by the Moi in question: ‘Ten years, you will still be a poor soul here. Breathing chalk dust and on permanent homa. I? well, sky is the limit, even if I get zeros in your irrelevant tests! Even my dog’s bed, will be more expensive that all you own!’
Such a spoilt brat who grew up spoon-fed on daddy’s lap, could be running your country next toward vision 3020 of Otishotish! And then he has to compete predators in the mode of Putin, Obama, Merkel, or Kagame?
I rest my case. I will hear your defence.
####MANGU HIGH OR NOTHING ELSE####
ON THE OCCASION OF A YOUNG BOY'S SUICIDE IN KENYA.
I seeth with venom on behalf of his soul
I indict the system that failed his ambition
I mourn the talent that my nation has lost
Poor boy who did his best and passed his exam
Clever boy who saw no option but to take his life.
And I will be back! On a happier note. Don't I need a drink after that session!
