The ruling coalition government reaction to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in West African countries is reckless and worrisome. Majority of Kenyans including myself are dismayed by the actions or measures that they have enacted to mitigate the spread of the deadly Ebola virus making Kenya to be classified as a high-risk nation by the WHO. Today the president is reported to have made a statement and I quote “…his Government will not shun West Africa over the current Ebola outbreak in the region” www.nation.co.ke/news/politics/Kenya-will-not-shun-West-Africa-over-Ebola--Uhuru/-/1064/2419264/-/mue1se/-/index.html.
The statement does not make logical sense, already the countries experiencing this pandemic has closed their physical borders and some have declared a state of emergency to try and pacify the diseases spread and all we do as a country is make illogical statements. To follow-up on the commitments not to isolate West African countries affected by Ebola, they have dispatched two medical doctors to Monrovia – Liberia on an assignment whose objectives do not make sense. Details are found here www.nation.co.ke/news/Ebola-State-sends-team-to-Liberia-as-KQ-maintain-flights/-/1056/2419020/-/owmua3/-/index.html
The continuation of Kenya airways KQ flights to these regions is also making the country to be at high risk for transmission and spread of this deadly virus to the rest of the world, read details here www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-28769678. Already the Korean airline has suspended their flights based on WHO assessment.
Naikuni and KQ management on the other hand are waiting on medical experts from the Jubilee government and the World Health Organization (WHO) to stop flights to West Africa! Despite the fact that the country has been classified as high-risk; I suppose they are waiting for a private letter addressed to them in their private bag offices before they can act! KQs CEO and top management are paid handsomely to make tough decisions – as a shareholder, I’m disappointed by their short–term business decisions that tramps public safety and long term strategic business planning. I’m certain that there will be irreparable dent afflicted to all sectors of our economy should the first case of Ebola occur within our borders.
