I must say I have been of the belief FGM is no longer practiced or at least not as widely only to recently find out from a surprising source that it's more prevalent than is the case most people assume. I think the best way to combat FGM is not necessarily criminalizing it but an intense deprogramming of those who still believe in it. This article and others I am sure are in the pipeline highlights the challenge to ending this crude practice especially when done in traditional ways. Female Genital Mutilation; How The Rich Do ItMy sources tell me a very prominent person is soon to speak to this issue via a column in a local daily that will surprise many and hopefully raise even more awareness and thought provoking.

Former Attorney General Sir Charles Njonjo weighs in on this issue in a column appearing in today's Star Our Government Can Put An End To Barbaric Act of Cutting Girls. I totally agree. I know that many would find it surprising this eminent personality would write about this topic but it's quite apt in shining more light on this issue if others emulate Mr. Njojo, especially in the communities he mentions in this article, Maasai, Samburu, Kisii, and Kuria, they would help in bringing about more awareness of the harm brought about by this outdated and perverse practice.
