Folks, hostages have been taken in a Cafe in Sydney Australia by what appears to be one gunman. He has tried to get his message out through the media through one of his hostages but the station contacted turned down the request saying "no negotiations will be made between the media and the armed offender." www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-30473983I seriously doubt given such a scoop any of our local media would follow the same high road and refuse to give the terrorist a platform from which to make his demands...

Anything beyond the title is "gory", hence "criminal" to report in Kenya!

Wait until you meet terrorists of a higher caliber like the IRA. Margaret Thatcher tried to media block them out. They planted a massive bomb in the hotel where she was staying. And they did not issue any communique! It was Thatcher herself, shaken and full of dust after a narrow escape, who announced who had done it! O!? responded an Irish satirist, I thought the word IRA was banned in Great Britain! whats wrong with the BBC and their PM? going gaga on IRA the whole week!? Let the media report events. Just that, report. That is enough. The media refuses to report, we give them another name!

You can bet the Kenyan media would have been competing on who owned the scoop over the others without giving a though to the consequences as the media house in Australia did. You then wonder why the media in Kenya cannot see through the reasons for the regulations being added to the Security Laws now before parliament!

A few things the KE media should learn from Australia. The "live streaming" was delayed 3 minutes. Enough time to censor "gory" images as you cut to the talking heads in studio. From the disaster at Makongeni I saw that at least Nairobi County is learning how to disseminate information. They took charge from very early on giving almost hourly updates while the media did what it does best; airing what is said (without being granted the opportunity to speculate). The bracketed part is usually where things go pear shaped...

The bracketed part is usually where things go pear shaped... b6k, I first heard of the deliberate delay in live-streaming during the Beijing Olympics. The Chinese expected some political actions --maybe from Uyghur nationalist spotters, taking a leaf from the famous black panther salute at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. John Carlos and Tommie Smith. But I am amazed at you praising Nairobi county for taking charge from the beginning! Bureaucrat politicians and their spinners in charge of news! what then are you consuming --hehe! and you reduce journalists to mere megaphones of what has been said!? brainless tape-recorders at best! I would expect some speculation myself: called analysis. For instance a pundit: I do not think this Makongeni stuff can be al-shabaab, because there is no sensible strategic objective for them, worth expending the kind of logistical resources that would be necessary to blow up a flat in Makongeni! Therefore it is a case of Kenyan engineers and constructors cutting corners, and endangering the tenants. i guess that is also as evil as terrorism: deliberately building a collapsible multi storey! Haha! may be we will miss nothing if the media is muzzled --if theirs is merely to repeat the said!

The Makongeni building collapse may not have been Al Shabaab instigated but it still shows the moral decay that is at the root of our Achilles with the Somali terrorists. Corruption, greed, lawlessness & a general disregard to common sense. The first three cover the building owner, kajo inspectors who looked the other way while a building without requisite permits was allowed to be occupied. The last one covers the residents who stayed on even after being warned to move out as the building showed signs of subsidence in the marshy plot & cracking.
The rescue response was remarkable for a change. NYS, KDF, Kenya Police, Red Cross, St John's Ambulance & others were all on the ground early on. Heavy equipment was brought in by KDF & NYS. For the first time there was no criticism of lack of disaster preparedness. Even the County folks have to be commended for their updates even as they investigate their underlings allowing such death traps to be built & occupied in the first place.
