BARRACK OBAMA'S TRUE LEGACY (A Luo pivot post!)
2. THE OBAMA PUTIN PARALLEL
3. THE OBAMA PUTIN DIVERGENCE
4. NO DEAL TO CLOSE, TRUMP'S DWINDLED OPTIONS
1. ANATOMY OF A DIFFERENCE
Boris Yeltsin, a mentally shrunken alcoholic with a permanent lecherous grin, was putting up acts. He was pretending at running Russia. In truth, he was a dead-weight already wearing a death mask, much in the same way several aging African leaders now are, including Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe. These are degenerated half-corpses holding down a people, while letting all the world's looters and their local hirelings rape and fcuk them up to their fill. Mavi ya kuku kabisa!
In Russia, a beltway of oligarchs, a coterie of financial and industrial parasites, had locked the country down in their grasp. They were controlling all her vitals, ever feeding the president drink to keep him forever drunk so they could run his politics unperturbed. They succeeded, for a time, to have the whole of Russia's resources mortgaged to their narrow interests. (Very much like an African, or Luo neo-colonial regime with powerful friends abroad and a farcical mask of liberal democracy at home. The Luo bit can be the Yala swamp episode for instance!)
The majority of the once hard-working Russian people, dispossessed of their all by a hurricane of plunderous privatization under the guise of SHOCK THERAPY, were flung back to the squalid social relationships of pre-revolutionary Russia, only in this case not agrarian but industrial serfdom or destitute vagrancy, yet, compounding matters, the industrial base was in steep decline, in deep crisis. Such a far-back swing of the social pendulum, necessitated an equally ancient momentum of correction. ---That is a process to restore the primacy of politics over finance, restore state social priorities over Multinationals, restore the supremacy of government (bureaucracy ) over private Concerns, and address the concerns of a seething population. In Russia, this population was one traumatized by the loss of a recent past ---of USSR Greatness. It still had a powerful sense, nostalgic perhaps, of national autonomy and sovereignty. The 'shock-therapised' Russia they inhabited did not look, feel nor sound like an Independent state at the helm of its own destiny. Neither did the 'Oblomovian' Jeltsin look like what Pereistroika and Glasnost had ordered for the children of a dead Soviet empire, --to rebuild a prosperous and glorious future (replacing their dreary Soviet past!)
The sentiment of independence for nations with a burning historical memory is no joke. That is why the British electorate shocked their elite by voting BREXIT. Brussels feels like a controlling, colonial yoke, not to the elite though, for whom the Brusselians bureaucracy is a tool for imperial neo-liberal flag-raising. Yet contemporary France too, in crisis of decline beyond her current elite to arrest, is having two powerful candidates mobilising large swathes of the electorate in an anti EU, more French autonomy pitch. ---Everybody recognises there is Germany at the centre, and then the rest in the EU, satellites. It is hurting prides, ancient prides, leading to nationalist ressurgence. In the same way, Russia was seething under the clownish regime of the Great Drunk. Searching for an escape route.
It is the economy stupid yes, but get the politics wrong, you are a gone class. Politics introduces a fiery concept into the social debate; in the case of a post-renaissance world, these are like the revolutionary concepts of liberty, justice and social justice. People start mouthing slogans like Egalite etc etc; people enshrine them in the founding documents of states, promulgate them, mythologise and embed them in the national psyche, then an engorged elite wakes up one chilly day to happily claim, 'get real, one can't possibly take all that constitutional sh!t seriously! can they!?'
Howbeit --- surprise surprise, there you go! civilised man gets confronted with the Liberation wars, rebellious colonies and the other forms of outlawed dissent at home. Hmmm. hell hath no fury like a rennaisance dream quashed. That is the problem in the Middle East. Medieval regimes long after the rennaisance, gets a lot of people hot under the ... not collar but djelaba and veil! -KABOOM!
I must admit I am rewinding how we, Nyanza Luo Kenyans, promulgated the new constitution with such vigelegele na makofi za furaha, only for the fishy elite to turn around the next day and say, 'HOLY SH!T, you don't think such stuff like CHAPTER SIX are to be taken seriously, do you!?' This turn-around episode offers a ringside seat to how nations deviate from their senses and degenerate at the hands of a vision-challenged aristocracy.
Czar Alexander II abolished serfdom in Russia in 1861 under the pressures of the ideas of THE ENLIGHTENMENT. That ( ptent ideological package of) enlightenment is what I call a fiery concept. But the royal family in its fantasies of divinity sought to keep things the same, so Russia fomented some, and some more, until Lenin and his mates like Leon Trotsky and Kirov came in and put an end to the stinking ROMANOV FAMILY BUSINESS. The last of the divine Romanovs, still suffering from the familial delusions of grandeur, ended up in a disused pit latrine in Siberia' Taiga forest, I think.
Such horrid stuff can happen even to gods who get the politics of social relations wrong. Jehovah and Allah can look back and see the skeletons of the gods that were before their monotheistic rise, and ponder.
A narrow elite, an aristocracy, a plutocracy, any oligarchy or some other form of bio-financial royalty, even a pretender meritocracy of White world domination, bent on regimenting social inequality, bent on perpetuating a political system iron-casting a racial caste system as it were, is sitting on a crown of thorns, or as we say these explosive days, on a bomb. And this holds even if you are the exceptional America, god's every Eden of freedom.
Ending official slavery was thus worth a massive civil war in the USA, just like completely ending serfdom was worth a Revolution in Russia. (I should find time to compare the lives of serfs in Tzarist Russia, and the lives of Slaves in America, the latter United States.)
FOOTNOTE: 'OBLOMOVIAN'
Ivan Goncharov's famous novel first published 1859 has the aristocrat, AiAi-O, Ilya Ilyich Oblomov, as the main protagonist. Legendarily lazy, indecisive but an adorable pet reclused to his bed most of the working day, I.I.O became a folklorish character in Russia. Romantic Tolstoy (the legend of Anna Karenina and War and Peace) waxed ever delirious of him. But impatient men, ruthless and bored of Russian backwardness based on a debilitating serfdom and Tsarist rot, demanding a New Deal for Mother Russia and her pre-historic empire, saw in Oblomov the personification of that which had to be uprooted from the Russian soul, a soul corrupted by centuries of Tzarism and Orthodox Church's prostitution to power: Oblomov was the personification of Pathological Inactivity. Vladimir Lenin, usually an astitute political economic analyst, took vocation into cultural criticism, stung by Ilya Ilyich Oblomov and his jocular popularity.
Why would anybody work hard, the Russian youth reading Ivan asked.
Anyway, our Russian hero Oblomov is the fullest flower of lazy aristocratic mentality. Always, he becomes overwhelmed with feelings of great distaste and repugnance, and sometimes even pity, when peer pressure piles on him to keep up appearances being a busy bee with everything else which occupies the normal and going. These will be mortgages, loans for bigger cars, greater credit card red ranges, careering, productive work, business success, wealth and prestige, possessions and a multicultural harem in every city.
Oblomov can't be bothered any.
And there is one huge trouble to crown it all. He is lazy in physical action yes, he can never make up his mind yes, but his mind is lithe, quick and, showing he spends his time in bed thinking some deep thoughts, he offers devastating, even convincing criticism of the banality of the daily sh!t of dreary loads the hard-workers' have to push to satisfy ambition!
There is a dark tone here, and Ivan Goncharov was satirically pulling legs. May be like Nikolai Gogol (of the Government Inspector fame -which was a set book in East Africa literature curriculum). Gogol was famously accused by the Soviet authorities of ever mocking and inviting others to laugh at just how stupid the hard working working classes really are!
Yeees,
If a hairdresser Josephine Kabura can, rags to milionare overnight, leave a bank with a truckload of hard-cash, and if in Nigeria, a bar-tender can live in an apartment with $43M dollars cash, working hard to be rich may not be the most intelligent thing you, dear parent, can tell a nest of your Kenyan post adolescent work-shy youth, even if most of them are Luos! (I hear we Luos are the laziest of the Kenyan tribes!)
Yeees!
