A Digital Essay by Onyango Oloo
There is a lot of turmoil in Jubilee.
This is in the wake of the recent party nominations which saw a lot of heavy weights fall by the wayside. Names like Kabogo, Kabando, Mutahi Kagwe, Esther Murigu, Jamleck Kamau, Ndathi, Mbarire are a few names that spring to mind.
Many have opted to run as independents while still supporting the re-election of President Uhuru.
A few of the President’s own kith and kin-like Anne Nyokabi Gathecha, an old friend from my time in Canada are also gone. She was the Kiambu Woman Representative and Uhuru's first cousin.
In Nairobi Mike Sonko defied the odds and handily defeated former Presidential aspirant Peter Kenneth in a quest of which Jubilee figure would be lined up against Dr. Evans Kidero.
The press is talking of a Third Force among Central Kenya MPs who have promised those who got Jubilee certificates a bruising battle. There is talk of two individuals-Mwangi Kiunjuri and Deputy President Ruto being behind the woes of those who lost out. There is further speculation that all these developments are part of 2022 Presidential Election succession where the Uhuru’s deputy has telegraphed that he wants to occupy.
Remember the discredited Mutahi Ngunyi and his theory of the “Tyranny of Numbers” that was employed in 2013 to justify why the TNA/URP pact embraced a tribal duopoly when it came down to senior government and administrative appointments only reserved for Gikuyus and Kalenjins to the exclusion of more than 75 other ethnic communities in Kenya?
Well, it is a hungry and angry hyena that has come to chomp on Jubilee’s ass big time.
Apart from alienating qualified elite professionals from the Luhya, Luo, Kisii, Mijikenda, Arab, Kamba, Swahili, South Asians, Maasai, Wazungu and other communities, this tribal balderdash helped to intensify the latent conflicts underlying the Meru, Mbeere, Embu and affiliated ethnic groups around the Gikuyu community. It also heightened the regional rivalries within the Agikuyu as people of Nyeri, Muranga, Nyandarua, Kiambu, Kirinyaga and the Rift Valley Gikuyu diaspora started complaining of being side lined.
Among the Kalenjin people pointed fingers at William Ruto and Charles Keter and the years of Jubilee misgovernance brought out the old rivalries let’s say between the Kipsigis and the Nandis with other sub groups like the Keiyo, Marakwets, Tugen and Pokots feeling taken for granted with some of them seeking solace in KANU, Chama cha Mashinani and even NASA affiliates.
As if this was not enough, the rampant corruption, the blatant tenderpreneurship and shameless nepotism which made names like Waiguru, Gethi and Kabira unfortunate household names really shamed the tens of thousands of innocent and honest members of the Agikuyu left thoroughly embarrassed-even those who heartily supported and voted for Jubilee in March 2013.
Now as Kenya gears up for the August 8th elections, the tyranny of ethnic chauvinism is slated to wreak havoc on Jubilee.
For one, unless things change rapidly in May, June and July, NASA is forming the new government with Raila Odinga as President, Kalonzo Musyoka as Deputy President, Musalia Mudavadi as Prime Minister, Isaac Ruto and Moses Wetangula as Deputy Prime Ministers and a slew of ODM, Wiper, ANC, FORD Kenya and Chama cha Mashinani MPs as Ministers and Assistant Ministers.
As for Jubilee, don’t be surprised if William Kabogo gets the better of Baba Yao Waitutu or if the REAL Iron Lady Martha Karua prevails over the notorious, arrogant thief Anne Waiguru.
