Kenya considers itself a regional player, that consideration underlie the invasion of Somalia under the guise of flashing out al-Shabaab. The West played a cajoling influence with cash – and out went the Kenyan Defence Force, now fully stationed in Somalia, initially under its own name – Operation Linda Nchi but later under regional banner – AMISOM.
Kenya thought it was the leader and deserved to lead AMISOM. But only a few weeks ago, Ethiopia took the lead, relinquishing the Kenyans Generals to third rated military leaders, even after Ugandans . The buddy relationship between Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia isolates Kenya which feels frustrated and isolated by realignments in the Horn.
So, last week, when Somalia sold blocks of maritime blocks known for oil and gas treasures, it was clear Somalia felt so embolden to do so, it knew or thought it knew that Kenya will do probably nothing. After all, the sale was done in London with a clear approval of the British.
I understand from sources close to Kenyatta, that the sale, rather the auction of the large swathes of offshore resources caught him unaware. He summoned the British High Commissioner to beg him to stop the auction, to which I understand the High Commissioner said, no can’t do.
What happened to Kenyatta and his foreign policy? He started his second term with big plans. He opened several new embassies, wants a seat in the UN Security Council and getting Trump’s invite. But, all those bravados did not stop the British from getting their hands on the massive gas/oil maritime reserves. There is a school of thought the British approached Kenya for the gas/oil reserves as they already have the Turkana’s reserves, but Kenyatta is understood to have said, the Chinese will pay more, please go away. After all, the repayment of the Chinese debt has been falling behind and needed to be services. And the canning British did a number of him and seduces the Somalis to play ball and sealed the deal in London before the Chinese took the whole loot.
Kenyatta must now close the Somalis refugee camps immediately, recall KDF back to Kenyan borders and retake the maritime gas/oil reserve by force – and station a Navy unit with the help of Chinese armour. The threat of losing part of Kenya’s rich maritime territory to Somalia where KDF are dying to keep them secure should awoke drunk Kenyatta that if he does nothing, he will forever be useless president Kenya has ever had!
As for the British, they have boasted their help with counterterrorism; maybe it is time to kick them out and establish China as more reliable close friend. All the years we took the British to our hearts did not yield any tangible results in contrast to gains from turning to China. The British are treating us with disdain and must be told so without fear. We need them to vacate Naivasha/ Laikapia ( i don't mind holding the land in trust for Kenya - please put my name on the lease) and for every British and foreign person in Kenya, there should be expat tax to our coffers.
