"NCEC" <ncec@ncamovement.org> To: List Deleted Subject: ARREST AND RELEASE OF HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVISTS Date: Tue, 23 Aug 2005 16:59:45 +0300
Dear Colleagues,
The Three activists who were arrested yesterday at Naivasha were released this morning after appearing in Naivasha law courts charged with unlawful assembly and participating in an illegal procession in Naivasha. The three were leading demonstrations in Naivasha (reported in yesterday and today press and electronic media) protesting against discrimination on the right to work. Naivasha residents and surrounding areas were denied jobs by the Sogea Road Construction Company that was given tender to reconstruct Mai Mahiu –Lanet road.
The three were released on cash bail of Ksh 8,000 each. The local people turned up in large numbers for solidarity support. There is a lot of tension in the area and already a notice to hold more demonstrations on Friday August 26, 2005 has been taken to the Naivasha OCS. We are yet to confirm that people in Gilgil area are also planning to hold demonstrations on the same day over the same. In connection with this, NCEC thanks all those that assisted in one way or the other but wish to note with a lot of concern that there seems not to be a serious cooperation within the human rights movement. A report is going to be generated from NCEC on this matter.
Thanks
Ndung’u Wainaina Programme Manager, NCEC.
