adongo? goodmorning?
what is this i am hearing that uncle sam has shut down the arizona based sunrise community banks and what does it mean for the reconstruction of somalia in the context of your discourse in this thread?
do you foresee other american friendly states like canada and in europe following suit and don't you agree with me that criminalizing of haawala system for what may be very legitimate reasons is counterproductive given it lacks backing of other state actors especially in africa where remittance is itself a contributor to the gdp?

NEWSFLASH: The ethiopian army has moved in full armour into Somalia, capturing a town near her body from al-shabaab. --A shabaab spokesman says. They have withdrawn from the town, and the TFG says they asked the ethiopians for help. The ethiopians have not said whether they are moving all the way down to mogadishu, in a repeat of their ill-fated invasion a decade ago.

nereah,
I will check oout about the Sunrise Community Bank and Uncle Sam. For the record, the present Canadian government is even worse than Uncle Sam. They surprised many Canadians by their recent extreme actions on Iran following the new wave of sanctions. They went farther than any other western country including Britain. Canada effectively banned Canadian corporations from dealing with any entity or its subsidiaries that originate from Iran. Comapnies were given less than 30 days to completetly dis-invest from any such endevours. Tha fall back is already running into billions of dollars of dis-investment as Canadian corporations pull back investment mainly in natural gas in places like Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Eastern Europe. In fact even Afghanistan has been hit hard.
Canada has one of the most advanced natural gas technologies in the world. It has taken the progerssive community by surprise because for once folks are getting ready to take the battle to Ottawa, this time supporting corporations. But the real issue is the hypocricy. Canada has massive investments in many trouble spots in Africa like Sudan, Nigeria etc and even in environmentally disastrous ventures. We also know that the issue about Iran is not so much about nuclear weapons but about who loves Israel the most.
In short the present Canadian government (the first Tory majority since 1993) is on a very dangerous crusade and I would not be surprised if they use any opportunity to slap bans on Somalia.
In general the entire strategy in Somalia is totally confused as you suggest. Everything is hit first and then think about it later. It could end up being a very dangerous misadventure for Kenya. But I will find out. One of my buddies is already down there in Hargeshia doing some stuff with UNDP and another one just left. People are still hopeful but the signs don't look good. I wil come back on this after the NEW YEAR festivities.
I hope you guys are having fun and hopefully you ventured into Bondo Town to mingle with the good people. I talked with my folks down there a couple days back. Things are tough but people were in real good cheer. HAPPY NEW YEAR my friend. 2012 is here.

adongo, i was literally a captive here in nairobi so did not venture out to the lakeshore as i would have loved. jaber ;D who is now proudly in 'her own home' has been there and she shares the news of tough times.my visiting mum, nyagem ma chi gem ;D was tremendous company(she flew back in time for the new year) and so were my visiting siblings and relatives from tz. now, about somalia, i read somewhere that museveni is quietly erecting roadblocks on kenya's military expedition in somalia. uganda has been the big boy in the africa union mission army(amisom)and kenya being the regional power want to "integrate " on obvious terms. this, according to my informants, explains why we still hear and read about kenya military strike on alsha baab instead of amisom) attack on the alsha baab despite nairobi stating that kenya was now operating under the command of the amisom. i am also curious about the role if not position of the united nations on the criminalization of hawaala money transfer and its implication on the regional economies like kenya where there is a robust somali entrepreneurship that thrives on hawaala based export/trade. united nations has oversight on somalia and in fact the 62 years old tanzanian pictured below is the special un envoy to somalia and i would be keen to hear his say on this. your guess on nairobi position is as good as mine.

way back in july 29, 2009 survery own onyango oloo had peered into somalia crisis in the context of kenyan security challenges bit.ly/pR2eJ in which he cites veteran journalist david ochami rated by my round table as the finest in kenya. i believe you will all agree with me that although the standard newspaper is the last kenyan media house to dispatch its crew to the war front, ochami who i have just learn is fluent in arabic has, in my small mind, provided the most sensible and remarkably informative coverage ever on the somali war . here is what i am talking about : bit.ly/v0JNDhwell done ochami
