We have all known that Kisumu is a war-zone when it comes to political-intolerance and outright tribalism and hero-worship but what many do not realize, or at least what the media, the police and the NCIC have thus far been unable to convey to the general public, is that the situation in Kisumu is worse than the situation in Kismayu and Afghanistan combined!
Kisumu has in the literal sense of the word ‘gone-to-the-dogs’ with gangs reigning terror and anarchy on the residents and outsiders; gangs running extortion-rackets on businesses and public transport vehicles; and intolerance to democracy, different political ideologies and media-freedom being the order of the day.
What’s worse is that our very own PM, Raila Odinga, is vehemently supported by these groups such that any ctivity in opposition to him is dealt with ruthlessly, mercilessly and without any remorse. It is so bad that when a hawker was asked why he only sold Raila Odinga posters and didn’t have any posters of his opponents he blatantly remarked, “Unataka niuawe!” Literally, “do you want me to be killed!”
The gangs have literally cracked down on democracy such that Raphael Tuju’s case of stoning is nothing compared to recent happenings!
To make matters worse, there exist a myriad of gangs in Kisumu and all these are currently engaged in a massive ‘turf-war’ over control of the town, over arms (yes, you read that right – guns) and over resources (businesses, public-transport routes etc).
The main groups go by the names China, America, Japan and Russia with gang members identifying themselves as Chinese, Americans, Japanese and Russians respectively.
These have taken over the town, its businesses (in extortion rackets) and even the police, local administration and the town council. They rule by intimidation and threats with resilient bodies such as the local council having to conduct its business under the shadow of secrecy in order not to draw the wrath of these groups.
A case in point is a recent situation where the local council intended to demolish some stalls due to discrepancies in their locations but the situation on the ground was so ‘hot’ (read – violent) that the council had to operate like a military strike force i.e. they went in fast and under the shroud of secrecy and managed to demolish the stalls and get out before the gangs got wind of its activities. This was in a predominantly ‘Indian’ neighborhood in the middle of Kisumu town. A similar incidence also occurred in the location of ‘Nyamasaria’.
And it’s not as though the gangs operate under the cover of darkness but rather they operate in the open and in plain sight, with many donning ‘Orange’ ODM caps.
The police have so far been unable to contain them and are quite literally overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the size of the gangs. Recently, two gangs which were feuding over firearms surrounded the local Kisumu police station and started accusing each other of owning ‘small arms’.
A shocking factor is that Fidel Odinga and some politicians had facilitated the arming of one of the groups (the Americans) with legal weapons and this so-called American gang was fighting it out with the ‘Chinese’ gang at the police station. The Americans claimed that the ‘Chinese’ gang was concealing weapons but this was just an attempt to misdirect everyone from the fact that the weapons under question were actually in the possession of the ‘American’ gang.
These gangs have so far been able to annihilate all democracy in Kisumu with a recent incidence sparking a spat of violence and anarchy. It all started on the 15th of September when a man who had donned a TNA scarf was confronted by group members of the American gang in a mall in Kisumu. The man was roughed up and his scarf confiscated and burned.
What followed was too horrid to imagine! The gang members started identifying and rounding up Kisumu residents who had welcomed the TNA party to Kisumu and then they set out to loot and destroy their businesses which were in Kondele and to burn a Land Rover that belonged to one of the alleged ‘TNA’ supporters. What’s even more shocking is that the Land Rover was burned at the main Kisumu bus stage! These alleged ‘TNA’ supporters were also roughed up and beaten with some being hospitalization afterwards!
The gangs are hell bent on stopping the democratic process in Kisumu and are only known for their dictatorial tendencies. Residents of Kisumu are not allowed to think about any that stands in opposition to ODM and PM Raila Odinga. It is strange that PM Raila Odinga has free reign to travel anywhere in the country but no one is allowed to breathe freely in his backyard of Kisumu where intolerance is the order of the day. In essence, Raila Odinga’s hold over Kisumu has transcended from being a political hold to now being a criminal hold also.
The actions of these groups have moved beyond hate-speech to threats of violence and actual violence. And all the while their actions receive funding and support from PM Raila Odinga and Fidel Odinga. The question can be asked of how Raila Odinga would run the country in the event he is elected President if this is what is happening in his backyard and under his watch and supervision?
The gangs have clamped down on Kisumu and are literally running the town. All who are deemed enemies of these gangs get their merchandise destroyed thus leaving them without a means of livelihood which makes leaving Kisumu their only option.
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission is powerless in the case of Kisumu. Anyone who tries to enter Kisumu with a political or media agenda is deemed an enemy from the start and such an attempt is tantamount to trying to enter enemy territory in the middle of war-time. The town has literally turned into a proverbial warzone.
The police on the other hand, who are charged with the duty of maintaining law and order, are at the mercy of these gangs and they are currently besieged by these gangs from all sides. The situation is so bad that these law enforcement officers are unable deal with the sheer amount of cases reported as these seem to trickle into the police station torrentially (literally – every minute).
The media has also under siege by these gangs with The Standard’s coverage of the ‘Nyamasaria’ story being manipulated and being twisted to suit the ‘American’ gang. Freelance journalists get it the worst with the gangs tracing them and on finding them force them to delete any footage of pictures they have taken of any activity or location in the town. In the event that the freelance journalists refuse to surrender the footage, the gangs forcefully take away any equipment that the journalists might have in their possession.
Finally, when all fails one would think that the only line of defense that Kisumu residents have is to fall back on the long-established and capable arms of the local administration. But here is where there is a sinister twist. The local administration is actually in cahoots with these criminal gangs, with most administration offices infiltrated by these hooligans. The gangs easily get meetings with the PC and his DC’s. More often than not these meetings involve the local administration and the ‘American’ gang which is constantly accusing the ‘Chinese’ gang of being responsible for all the mishaps in Kisumu. The local administration knows too full well who the perpetrators of criminal activity are but they do nothing; no one is arrested or locked up for intimidation, extortion or violence!
