A digital comment from Onyango Oloo
Yesterday I posted an Open Letter powered by my shock of Hassan Omar’s decision to join Jubilee.
Today, I was dumb founded when I received a question captured in an e-mail message. It was from a comrade.
The question was:
"I hear Mwandawiro Mghanga too has 'defected' to the Kenyatta/Jubilee side. Have you heard anything like that too?"
In my shock, all I could manage only this:
“I will be quite SURPRISED. But anything is possible. Let me check.”
Half an hour later, my comrade responded with more details. Among these was an unnamed member of the SDP basically confirming what I had been told earlier adding that Mwandawiro told him that it comes a time when the nation is more important than any political party adding that the SDP would soon launch the re-election of Uhuru Kenyatta.
When the SDP member wanted to ask him whether it is the decision of the party or his own personal move but he switched off the phone on the member!
I contacted an uncle who is also a member of the party and he basically confirmed what had been told to me.
Initially, I thought of calling Mwandawiro Mghanga. But my very good friend, who I have I known for over thirty years apart from residing in the same hall at the University of Nairobi and serving two terms at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison; my very good friend and comrade in arms for decades has been REFUSING to pick my calls for the last six months. So I did not bother.
Mwandawiro going to Jubilee is worse than Hassan Omar’s about face.
Here is a COMRADE who introduced me to Marxism-Leninism and gave me my first copy of Pambana organ of the December Twelve Movement. He used to live in Uppsala, Sweden and I in Montreal, Canada. We were both invited by the late Dr. Apollo Njonjo and James Orengo some time in 2006 to jump start the Social Democratic Party which had become somehow moribund. The first thing we did when we agreed to be part of the party’s reorganization was to revamp the party’s programme and constitution. Later on Mwandawiro Mghanga became Chairperson and I eventually became the SDP Secretary General.
I will not write another Open Letter.
Mwandawiro, through his tempestuous action has basically EXPELLED himself from the party and its leadership.
I resigned from the SDP in May 2014-even though if you visited the party’s website today, I am still listed as the Secretary for Ideology.
It is up to the Social Democratic Party of Kenya leadership to make a formal pronouncement on the issue.
But let me say this in closing:
Mwandawiro was not just a member of parliament, a party leader or a former political prisoner.
He has disappointed many people particularly the youth. History will not forgive Mwandawiro Mghanga.
That is all.
