An Excerpt With No Further Comment: Outrage over plan to build Kibaki Sh100m home
Story by NATION Team Publication Date: 10/7/2005
The Government should shelve plans to build a new home for the President and instead channel the funds to more pressing needs.
Members of Parliament, church leaders, members of civil society and councillors said the planned construction of a Sh100 million luxury home was not a priority as buildings at the Nairobi State House were sufficient to serve the Head of State.
Law Society of Kenya chairman Tom Ojienda said the project was not "in the public interest and should be shelved until a later time. There is no evidence that there is a shortage of accommodation at State House to warrant such a move. It's untimely".
However, the Government defended the plan with spokesman Alfred Mutua saying the decision had been discussed and approved by the Cabinet.
Planning minister
Prof Anyang' Nyong'o said the planned building "made sense".
"It is meant to separate the President's residence from office for better governing of the nation," Prof Nyong'o said.
The minister added: "The project is cost-effective. It is logically sound to separate physical office from State House where a lot of activities take place." |
