Draft Debate Goes TribalBy Daniel Luseno, Kenya Times CAMPAIGNERS for the ‘Yes’ team yesterday shifted the Draft debate into a high tribal gear with assertions that President Mwai Kibaki did not need the support of other communities to see through the proposed constitution.
Proponents of the ‘Yes’ crusade maintained the voting population among the Gikuyu community alone was enough to facilitate victory for President Kibaki’s stand at the November 21 referendum.
Special Programmes assistant Minister, Dr. Wilfred Machage said yesterday that President Kibaki had no cause to worry, as the over 1.8 million voters among the Gikuyu community was enough to sail the document through.
He said all the community needed was to vote as a bloc at the referendum, since there will be other minority communities ‘here and there’ that will support the same course.
He hinted that out of the country’s 30 million-plus people, the Gikuyu controlled a majority of the population out of which 1.8 million are eligible voters, from the overall 11 million registered voters countrywide. With this in mind, he said, Kibaki only needed to woo a few votes from the Luhya, Coast, Meru, Embu and Akamba communities to achieve his dream. He made the remarks in Nairobi’s Kawangware surbabs where five assistant Ministers and two legislators took the ‘Yes’ crusade to Dagoretti constituency.
