Let me try and whip a small digital essay in under fifteen minutes. The Business Centre at Hotel Camayenne is closing very soon and we are all expected at a reception on these very premises- it is for all the international guests who have been attending the African Social Forum here in Conakry.
Pundits are punditing; spin doctors are spinning; rumour mongers are mongering; speculators are speculating; liars are lying; every Kenyan has an opinion about the new cabinet and so why should I be an exception ati just because I am out of the country for a couple of days.
Let me first say this:
No matter WHO Kibaki appoints to his cabinet, his regime still has a date with the Kenyan people. NARC as headed by Kibaki no longer has the confidence, respect and credibility among a wide cross section of Kenyans. Holing up at that State House with your close buddies to peruse the resumes of potential ministers is a task as futile as trying to walk on your head from Juja to Thika. Some may admire your courage and tenacity in trying the quixotic task, but you are likely to end up with a very bruising nogging. The thing you should do is to set the preconditions for enacting a new democratic constitution for the Kenyan people.
I noticed in the Sunday Standard
eastandard.net/hm_news/news.php?articleid=33158
that the donor countries are taking advantage of our political impasse to try and impose and imperialist and neo-colonial solution to the rift in the ranks of the Kenyan government. While it is a sad indictment on our so called "independent government" it serves as a pragmatic reality check about who really has the remote control flipping through the Kenyan television channels.
The other day when I was strolling somewhere near the Valley Arcade I almost squished a lizard which hepad me and blurted out:
"Jamaani Oloo mbona wataka kuniangamiza? Basi let me swing you the inside dossier..."
Overcome by shock at nearly assassinating a harmless Kiswahili jazzing gisifakiri, I was totally dumb-founded as the lowly reptile went on thus:
"I have taken a peak at that cabinet and here are some of the names- either Musikari Kombo or Mukhisa Kituyi for Vice-President; from the so called Luo Nyanza do not be surprised to see Orwa Ojode, Eric Nyamunga and the Middle Grounder Syyongo. Joe Khamisi at the Coast was merely trying to bargain for the VP position which he cannot get; Kibaki may sacrifice Kiraitu Murungi but NOT Dr. Murungaru who has implicated the President in so many shady deals..."
Impatient at the unsolicited rantings of a possibly insane lizard I walked on, making a mental note to be a more successful lizard killer the next time around.
The quandary for Kibaki is that he cannot really do without ministers from the Orange Democratic Movement-

even as he realizes that they are interesting in his office.
So we will have the first of a series of forgettable cabinet lineups between now and whenever the elections are called.
That is it.
