The political side of it all and which is the area Kibaki is a miserable failure - is what Raila has to think about. He has a long political career ahead of him and I do not agree that he can continue to rely on his own popularity without geting local leadership to sing his virtues! He is too astute a politician to think he can ignore what is going on. Couldn't agree more. The PM's resolve on the Mau is commendable and should be supported by all Kenyans who care for their country's future. That said, it would be unwise to ignore the potential political fallout from this. By nature Kenyan politics are about regional alliances (or tribal alliances if you will) and this KKK stuff may end up shifting the landscape from ODM's favor (job performance is still secondary but this may change). On the flip side I believe time is on the PM's side since the capricious nature of these alliances means that they will probably not last beyond the Mau issue. In any case I still remain skeptical of UK's and Kalonzo's ability to deliver their share of votes in the proposed alliance come election time.

The fundraiser was organized to do just one thing: TO SELL THE NAME OF RAILA AMOLO ODINGA. The salesmen and ladies won over themselves by trying to outdo each other on who could sell the product to the most number of customers gathered around the country, in the villages, cities, slums and idp camps. What a spectacle that was when all said AMEN when an emotional gemstone dealer turned preacher-cum-salesman thundered"God will ensure that this product comes into the seat of power by 1202".......before one njuri ncheke warrrior admitted:'We have spent time building walls against each other. It is time to pull them down. There is a season for everything. It is time to break down walls among ourselves'..and surely the walls will tumble down in the name of one Raila Odinga......in the same occasion,.......the chief of sales had this to say.."Our job is to take care of the weak, the poor and vulnerable" as we did after tha bungled '07 elections.....the weak, the poor and the vulnerable were well taken care of with bows n arrows....
the prince who knows the real worth of benefits of using the product...having acquired large swathes of space where the product can be well sold was very ecclesiastical when he said: “We don’t need to victimise today for tomorrow just as we can’t sacrifice tomorrow for today"...
All in all, it was a good show as the orphans of the retired chief salesman...DT Moi....gathered..in the name of idps but in the spirit of plotting for the next elections and maligning one Raila Odinga who seems to stand on their way in retaining their ill-gotten wealth....and to make matters more interesting, those who attended the fundraiser happen to be the executive idps of mau....so they were raising funds for themselves......Zakayo Cheruyot, Yusuf Haji (escorted by Kuti, Elmi n abdallah) Uhuru Kenyatta (karekes n kiraitus) Isaac & William Ruto and their gang, Mutula Kilonzo (muthama, kalonzo etc), Cyrus Jirongo, Franklin Bett, and Naomi Shaaban..the taita grabber.....it was all in the name....RAO rabet.

moving forward
so these guys collected 5m in the fund raiser
now the Mau secretariat and the PMs office have been fund raising for settling evictees
technically speaking these guys are supposed to hand over this cash to the PMs office to be consolidated with other efforts, after all they are cabinet ministers and supporting govt policy
any move to do otherwise would be insincere..... over to these folks...
in fact uhuru as min of finance should know the task of fund raising is quite difficult
considering that kibaki attempted to raise 30b for PEV IDPs and i believe at the last time it was announced he had only obtained 1b
given this background and the apparent "success" uhuru should be encouraged to fund raise every week or every month and avail this money to the line ministries since as he very well knows there are no funds for PEV IDPs or Mau forest IDPs.
now unless he doesnt know or understand his job, the most effective and accountable vehicles for distribution of these funds is through the various ministries, tasks and commissions that kibaki and RAO as joint heads of govt have set up, unless he wants to tell us that he doesn't trust these vehicles, which then begs the question whats he doing in govt and in min of finance

For those that suggest that the ICC-PEV thng is related to the recent happenings, you probably are right. But the question not being asked is why should this be linked to Mau and a plot against Raila?
Perhaps we need to look at NARA as a starting point of reference:
3. (1) There shall be a Prime Minister of the Government of Kenya and two Deputy Prime Ministers, who shall be appointed by the President in accordance with this section.
(2) The person to be appointed as Prime Minister shall be an elected member of the National Assembly who is the parliamentary leader of –
(a) the political party that has the largest number of members in the National Assembly; or
(b) a coalition of political parties in the event that the leader of the political party that has the largest number of members in the National Assembly does not command the majority in the National Assembly
I am highlighting section 2 subsection (b) as I think there are people in this new anti-Raila movement who want to use. Also note that there is no requirement for the leader to be "the party leader" but simply the "parliamentary leader"
So why am I going here? If this new lot can garner enough people to vote out the prime minister from office via a vote of no confidence, then we can have a certain Mr. Ruto as Prime Minister supervising and co-ordinating the functions of government which could include ensuring that the Kenya government does not hand over anyone to ICC under the guise of dealing with the issue locally. Remember Ruto has filed a case asking his name be excluded from the PEV list of the KNHCR, and as long as the matter is in court, then Ocampo may have his hands tied!
So are we being prepared for a Prime Minister Ruto? I think there are wolves that have smelt blood and it appears that they are bent on going for the kill! I can only hope that these politicians stop and think about the stability and the people of Kenya before pursuing their political aims.

Your analysis is intriguing but I doubt that they can pull it off. There is the other elephant called GCG and its composition. Then there is an alert populace to deal with. Then there are MPs who will cast an eye on possible reelection battles in case the alleged alignment precipitates a constitutional crisis and bunge has to be dissolved. It is a multi factorial and very fluid situation.

IM SUPRISED THAT THESE MULTI BILLIONARES/MILLIONAREES COULD ONLY RAISE 5 MILLION SHILLINGS FOR THE EVICTEES.
I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE WERE 40MP IN TEH MEETING IF EACH COULD HAVE CONTRIBUTED 1000 000 SHILLINGS EACH (WHICH THEY HAVE AND CAN CONTRIBUTE) WE WOULD BE TALKING OF 40M. BUT AGAIN FUND RAISING WAS NOT THE MAIN AGENDA.

btw
my final thoughts on this episode
there was a large number of "leaders" in this event claiming to be the future leadership of kenya
does anyone recall any one of them specifically stating their plans, agenda etc for kenya
true leadership is not about bad-mouthing opponents but about, outlining your goals, objectives and where possible achievements
did any of these fellows outline their achievements, and if Raila is the enemy, did any of them demonstrate how he or his office has in any way hindered their performance
the message that needs to be sent to the grassroots about these fellows is that
a) they have no agenda worth mentioning b) and therefore can only succeed by blocking (mud slinging) all others c) in order to cover up a and b therefore need to gang up with similarly inclined air heads
the bane of the poor and inept leadership dogging kenya
i have said it elsewhere before
it takes teams of skilled professionals, (engineers, architects, laborers etc sometimes even genius) several months and sometimes years or decades to build a monumental bridge or building
it however needs only a glue sniffing dim wit a couple of hours with a bullldozer or dynamite to bring it all crashing down
the question to ask of kenyans is who of these characters do we need to work with? and why do kenyans so much enjoy working with the dim-wits?
these kkk fellows should tell us what their agenda is for kenya

The people on the ground HAVE NOT YET DEMANDED this move. I wont waste my time trying to develop a road map and a thick plot of pulling out this exercise in futility. And as you ask what would they claim to be the reason for removal? These are the dying kicks of a very desperate horse. Wenye nchi would have been having a bemused look upon their faces had the Nation been in peace and in some relative prosperity. rough rider said1. Finish the job: the long history that brought us here is clearly that those who fought Mr. Odinga were never keen or able to finish the job. Because of this Raila always rose from the ashes of political battle, like a phoenix, again and again. Moi probably wishes he had hanged Raila in 1982. By 2002, Michael Wamalwa who was allowed Pyrrhic victory in Ford-K was for all practical purposes leading the Bukusu. Machiavellian politics are the only politics that may work with Raila. I couldn't agree more. The political dustbins are littered with the carcases of those who tried to chop Rs legs just because they had no agenda ya wenye nchi first. The biggest and baddest of them is kipkorios, the sloth from othay's pyrrhric victory enabled him to exist in survival mode at the cost of 1500 lives and thousands homeless, and the Nation torn asunder.

Kilemi Mwiria weighs in: Mau crisis may have cemented Raila’s place ahead of the packMost Kenyans agree that evacuation from the Mau should be done humanely. The solution will, however, not come from politically charged harambee drives which are more about political alignments for 2012 than they are about struggling squatters. Note that the big Harambee raised a mere five million shillings. Could the nine Cabinet ministers not raise this amount and even more from the Government if they were that serious? The Special Programmes ministry alone is spending many times that amount, not to mention well-wishers such as the Red Cross. And why did the objecting politicians not take similar stands on other water tower related evictions or the murderous deportation of some communities from the Rift Valley in 1992, 1997 and 2008? Why did those who are now revealing to us that Raila did not win in 2007 not intervene against revenge murders of innocent Kenyans? B y painting him as the bad guy, Raila’s opponents have only made him stronger. Many Kenyans now know that you can count on him to take a decision that could derail his political ambitions for the sake of country. This side of his character is not new. When he was Roads minister he ruffled the rich who had grabbed road reserves by demolishing their big bungalows. By now one hopes that Kenyans can no longer be easily swayed by political fence-sitters and extremists. They will no longer just follow what politicians tell them blindly; not after a chain of poor advice. Raila’s political history has clearly demonstrated that among his competitors he has been the most consistent and has paid the highest price for his beliefs. I doubt that anyone of them has done more to liberate Kenya from an oppressive state. In addition to years of detention, Raila was a key member of the team that stuck their necks out for change in 1991. His "Kibaki Tosha" declaration at Uhuru Park in 2002 was crucial in sending Kanu packing. Just think of what would have been left of this country if Kanu continued its reign or if some of these Kanu characters bounce back to the top job. And more on the agreement of a determined man ready to lay his political future on the line for state victory over bigotry. Is Raila’s stand on the Mau unrealistic or statesmanship? Mr Odinga has not been known to pursue unrealistic goals, eyes closed to practicality. In this case, one is persuaded that he is acting in the belief that whenever private interests clash with those of the state, the state ought to, and must, win. If he is, we are seeing the embodiment of statesmanship. Whatever is driving him, Mr Odinga has lost a huge chunk of the Rift Valley vote for standing firmly on the eviction of squatters from the Mau Forest. But the man is shrewd and enigmatic. Watch out for his engagement with central and eastern Kenya. www.nation.co.ke/oped/Opinion/-/440808/813568/-/5ogclx/-/index.html-Kaburwo-

Mau: The “convenient” leveler By SYLVESTER OLUOCH EA in Focus, Published November 27, 2009
The Mau forest saga has been unfolding in a manner unprecedented. Mau is turning out to be the fence that binds the wealthy and squatters in the same yard. Welcome to a tale of misery and opportunistic politics.
When the report on Mau first came out, there was evidence that more than 90 percent of the land was held by well-to-do people, whereas squatters huddled on the rest. Kenya’s two royal families; the Kenyattas and the Mois have vesting interests in the Mau, with Uhuru Kenyatta running a tree harvesting machine, which is as mean as a rock eater, and Daniel Moi running a tea factory.
That is only to make you understand why the Mau eviction is closer to their hearts, than any other eviction of encroachers on government land has ever been. Yet, I leave that to people with greater wisdom than me; else, I will delve deeper into it, as we walk the Mau trail, for this is a long trek.
Mau evictions have flipped our politicians, giving us a view of their “other sides.” Some have displayed a nuance of determination, which borders on ruthlessness. Others have shown a great capacity to “identify” with the people.
Yet others have been too personally affected, to let their guard down. Their reactions pass for poor melodrama; a clear indication that they are so withdrawn from reality, which the skits their advisors have worked on for ages, fail to impress.
Granted, there are humanitarian violations in the Mau eviction process, but not the eviction decision. This is a process that would rather be handled in the most humane way possible. This cannot be made the partisan political grit of the day, we as a people, can do better.
What we must establish is, whether the families camping by the roadside left their home districts, with mischievous intent to inhabit forest reserve unlawfully. We must also know what the government of the day did to encourage, or discourage the settlements. Thereafter, we can make informed decisions.
That notwithstanding, some evictees have confessed to having sold their lands, and used all the money, before moving to settle in the Mau. That is reckless. It also indicates that some of these evictees are first generation settlers, and will have no problem tracing their ancestral homes. It will serve Kenya well to discourage usage of taxpayers’ money, in a manner reminiscent of “collective losses and individualized gains.”
This leaves a seemingly clear path to a lasting solution. Or does it?
The major complication in the whole Mau imbroglio is the vested interests. There are individuals involved in unlawful profit making in this water catchment, and are using the hapless poor of Mau as a smokescreen, to disguise their heavy commercial activities – rarely does peasant activity devastate the environment so fast.
To say the least, all the sympathy, from the politicians towards the evictees, is a case of Mau being the “convenient” leveler, stewing the wealthy, and the poor in the same pot. For the first time ever, the landlords and squatters share a plight; in the Mau land loss.
The threat by a section of Members of Parliament (MPs), to ask some evictees to troop back to the forest was obviously to help the MPs, who hold thousands of hectares; get back their land. If indeed our legislators were genuinely up in arms for the well being of the people, we would have witnessed the same, during Mount Kenya evictions, Mount Elgon evictions, as well as Embobut evictions; and not only that, the same hue and cry would have rented our broadcasting space, during the road-reserve-encroachment evictions. However, during these preceding operations, there was a conspiracy of silence among politicians.
The sarcasm in these crocodile tears that MPs have shed from the roadsides in the Mau ranges to Nairobi hotels, lies in Kenyatta and Gideon Moi. The Kshs 200,000 Kenyatta contributed during the fund raising, equates to the value of trees his mean machine fells in the Mau every five minutes, and this has been going on for a long time.
If Kenyatta truly identifies with the misfortune of the evictees, and wants to help them, he has the wherewithal to settle them in one of “his” many parcels of land, and the same applies to younger Moi.
The sad side of all this is that, these politicians do not want to face reality. Mau has to be conserved, and to keep good constitutional order, the government should not reward unlawful encroachment.
The league of politicians is akin to vultures, always hawk-eyed, scouting for carcasses, and their new-found carcass is the Mau, and boy! Aren’t they scavenging?

Raila has to go on a offensive mode and not on the defensive mode against this gang of crooks, Uhuru and Ruto. He is the prime minister, the one who supervise this ministers, and being put to defend the action of a government that this ministers belong to beats the logic,it looks like its Raila single handedly decided on the mau conservation, when ministries which are supposed to organize for the relocation and compensation are seen openly rebelling against the government then we have a problem, its becoming more and more a campaign tool for uhuru and Ruto, unless they are stopped soon, this might give them a reason to go everywhere in kenya and portray Raila as the most insensitive person in kenya, kicking people from their homes and letting them die of cold and hunger by the roadside. when Ruto, knowing very well what Raila meant ,about them kalenjin leaders going to mau and shed crocodile tears,Ruto changes that to mean Raila said the mau squatters were crying crocodile tears, and Raila never said those people should go to hell, where they came from. This are kind of tactics Ruto is ready to use against Raila, and its catching up,its time to stop this crooks, let them defend their records,by thinking Ruto and uhuru will burn out is lying to ourselves, they are tapping on the suffering of poor people and their emotions, misinformation and back stabbing is all they know. With jimmy kibaki coming out to support Ruto and Uhuru so called peace initiative speaks volume on which side kibaki is,if this initiatives are mostly for bashing Raila then its time for Raila to join the dots and stop playing the good guy, this time round the evil forces are re grouping,if he gives up in mau Ruto and is gang wins,if he pushes forward he might not get the support he needs from the government, the funds he might need, logistical support, frustrations just for him to fail, either way the Pm needs plan B.
