phil? remind me who were previous board members of maseno university? was ida not one of them? i think so. i have no problem the whole of odinga family being appointed so long as they pay tax, they are qualified and most importantly they are kenyans.
remember nya gem turned down half million pay which kalonzo's wife gladly accepted and compare this to the sitting allowance she may choose to forego at maseno.
with respect to you phil, i think there is something about maseno that we ought to interrogate. the clue was in parliament last week with the minister of higher education's response to question by emuhaya mp wilbur otichilo(hope i get the name right).
there is a whiff of scandal at maseno university then blamed in absence of a functional board and probably thats what led to the reconstituting of the board.i am posting it here shortly.

Just out of curiosity Phil, isn't she qualified being an educationist and all? Otherwise relative of politicians would be rendered redundant if we carry your assertions to their logical coclusion.

I saw this too. These things are not even jobs. They meet once or twice a year and only when they have problems and get some allowance which amounts to nothing. I don't know if Ida was already in the board. Yeah people may jump on this with the usual nepotism claims but I think this is pretty much a storm in a tea cup kind of thing.

puleeze phil
This is meant to raise the Status of Maseno Univ, illustrious folks sit on Uni Boards all the time everywhere in the world.
Secondly do not forget that Ida, has a Univ degree in education and has taught a long time at high school level. Ida would probably be the first First lady with a UniV Degree should the Hon Prime Minister get to be P.O.R.K
Why dont you want this lady to serve? This is nothing but a board of regency which set policy and gets a per diem remuneration. Who knows what Ida could swing TO THE UNIVERSITY?
The topic of thread is beyond the stupidity of sensational journalism

Phil this is actually very smart on the part of Maseno. This sounds like what the US calls Board of trustees, and you want as many wealthy, influental individuals on as possible. It is good for fundraising and publicty. This is a smart move. If I was them I would get Lucy or Wambui Kibaki on board too.

Actually, I have a bigger problem with the presence of Prof. Kiptoon's name on that list. Is this not the same Kiptoon who almost ran Egerton to the ground before NARC came to power and ringed the changes? Why didnt they give it to Prof Kikaya?

Phill is just toying with your minds, especially to those who think the odingas are not kenyans and are undeserving of any public appointment.

My sources reveal that she is not sufficiently philanthropic as she actually draws the pay on quarterly basis through the PM's office.

People you should learn to delineate politics from real life issues. Any one as a Kenyan is entitled to be appointed in what ever position there be so long their credentials meet the par. For this thread i would think it is childish and uncalled for we really need to look into more important issues like i will start a thread on Ruto meeting museveni what are the two up-to...? Watch out

Raila is taking his supporters for granted. He thinks Kenya is his personal property that why he is practising the worst nepotism since Kenyatta presidency. Huyu mtu ni hatari sana. He needs to be told to shape up or go heal his skull in kibera as an Mp in 2012

I doubt if this position earns Ida any remuneration. Regardless, the point made is that she was appointed because she is Raila's wife. If that is the case, then I think, Raila has mis-used his position by allowing his name to favour his wife's appointment. There are many able kenyans out there who can serve well but have no name tag like Ida and therefore cannot compete fairly for such positions.
Secondly, Raila has been a prime minster for less than two years and here we have his family members taking up public positions left, right and center. What will happen when Raila becomes the president? I fear from what I have seen and read not only will his families ( including the tons of extended families he has) get favours, people from his Bondo village will populate the whole civil service. If one looks at his current office, and his staff, for example, one finds that he is surrounded by his own kith and kin. I am told, in his office, the lingua franca is none other that jaluo, yawa!
I think relations to anyone high up the leadership ladder should bar one from public appointments simply because many Kenyans may not have the recognitions which relatives of such leaders exploit. I think that is the Law in the USA, and the many other places. So the spouse of the USA President cannot be appointed or apply for a position in any public office while his or her spouse is USA president. The spouse can though seek elected office, and many have like Clintons - one was president and the other was a senator.

Sadik, I couldn’t agree more. The rate at which the Rt. Hon. PM is filling positions with his family members is quite alarming for any neutral. For a man whose main campaign platform was that of change, it’s really absurd. Take this Maseno position for instance, was it really necessary for Ida to have it? Indeed we need to ask ourselves what value Ida will add to the university and what she takes from it. And as you rightly put it, could she have been considered for the position were she not the wife of the PM? Whereas I cannot think of anything that she brings to the college, the university has lost a position that could have gone to a more disserving Kenyan in terms all that go with the functioning of higher institutions of learning. Being a country where political patronage is the order the day, how can one fail to feel that this is Raila’s way of having his tentacles everywhere? Could it be that, maybe this is why they so badly wanted Ruto out of the way because probably he was not playing ball in as far as this position is concerned? (Just wondering). I know some people have argued here that, the Odinga name is the proverbial ‘golden goose’ in terms of fund raising etc and that this is a blessing for the university. But when you look at the history of the Odinga’s you quickly realize that they are indeed not that sufficiently philanthropic (to use the words of the speaker Marende). I have tried to find community initiative that I can attribute to the Odingas without success be it as small as a maendeleo ya wanawake or even a village cattle dip, primary school or Church anywhere.

Mwalimu,
That the PM is not your favorite politician has become very clear in ALL your posts. If you could remove those RAILAPHOBE goggles for a minute, could you tell me why you think Ida is unsuitable for the Maseno position? Please drop the old tired line eti because she is the PM's wife. FYI RAO has better ways of gathering intelligence(wonder what secrets are discussed in a uni council meeting) other than "spreading his tentacles" by having his wife sit in a board meeting.
For heaven's sake this thread had nothing to do with Ruto...and who are these that "so badly wanted Ruto out of the way because he wasn't playing ball?"
Whoever has sent you...could you let them know that.....Ida Betty Odinga in her OWN RIGHT is celebrated by many kenyans for her grace, talent in leadership as well as INTELLECT. Like other Kenyans of similar qualities and talents....she deserves this post.
By the way I can't wait to read your contributions in other threads too.

Mwalimu Mwalimu,My friend you are shedding the mask of "objectivity" rather fast. Are you suggesting that Ruto, even after being charged with theft something that doesn't seem to bother you one bit, was actually removed to pave the way for Ida to be appointed! Come on. You struck me yesterday as a little more mature than that. Let keep the debate within the bounds of common sense regardless of our points of view. I don't even want to waste time arguing about Ida's qualification for the job. And then you come up with the tried and tested obscene argument that the Odingas have never been involved in any community initiative and that you have been looking all over the country and just can't find any. Where exactly have you been searching? Raila is the M.P for Kibera and I am sure if you comb the place long enough and hard enough you will come accross several schools and all sorts of community programs in that constituency. I am from Bondo and I can tell you Jaramogi whose name you are also trying to mismirch with the code word "the odingas" did a lot for his constituency in a very short time. I had the honour to live in his old house he built as a V.P. He donated the magnifient house to Nyamira Girls Secondary School which is actually built on land Jaramogi gave up for the school. After high school I taught at Nyamira Girls for a while and three of us were given the house by the school. It was beautiful staying at Jaramogi's home which was always immaculate. I am just telling you the tip of Jaramogi's phenomenon foot prints in our country and I am telling a small story right from his home and house. So ask around and you will find out those things you are looking. As for me I don't give a rat's tail about this nonsensical charity thing we expect from political leaders. Give us good policies, come up with serious and workable development plans and you can keep your charity to yourself. In Bondo Oburu has done some great things. The Bondo University is coming along and it is beautiful. The level of agriculture in the area is amazing. Growing up everybody was kind of engaged in subsistence farming today it is all systems go. Dairy farming is taking root in Bondo with great results. Tree farming has exploded in the last 15 years. The local economy is doing good, but we still a very long way to go. we are getting there if only we could get rid of the thieves robbing the tax payer everyday. adongo

Akinyi & Adongo, I wonder what is irking you this much. Tulizeni kidogo. By the way if you read my post above, you will realize that my response was to the slant that some people had tried to give to the thread. And the question I am asking here is very simple, that couldnt RAO do without this position? What value does it add to his course? And by the way I never made any attempt, even remotely to turn this thread into a Ruto issue. I was just thinking within writing on how immediately Ruto exits the HE minitry, Ida lands a job in a university. That is not a crime, is it? About you living in Jaramogi's house is neither here nor there, Jaramogi is not that 'villagish' as you are trying to portray him. What say you?

I really have no intention on getting stuck with the this story. I think its priority is kind of small. Ruto has no say on who gets appointed to University Councils. In fact I doubt the PM has anything to do with it either. The president appoints the council and I suspect he gets recommendations from the University administration. This is practically a volunteer job which pays nothing. Then you tried to bismirch jaramogi's name by coming up with the typical "the odingas" have not been involved in community initiatives claims etc. I am telling you some of us have actually known them in person and not just read about them in books. So I gave you an example of what the man did just coming in and how years later he actually donated stuff to school when he was busy elsewhere fighting with Moi. Jaramogi's contribution to his country are well known. It is actually insulting to defend him about "churches and community" initiatives. I told you to go to Kibera and look for Raila's community work. The only reason I am responding to this post of yours is that I can smell it across the ocean. It is so typical and so predictable from folk we know their interests. Sometimes we ignore them but it is always important to let them know they are not fooling anybody here. What you put here is what you get back. Hakuna shida. sawa? bye bye

mwalimu,
In case you haven't realized, you have, within a space of 2 days shown your true colors- and may I add lost the respect and tag of objectivity. In your maiden post, you came across as very mature and someone worth engaging. However, your real intentions are now clear and I doubt your posts will attract any attention from some of jukwaa's most respected members. Usijali, you have plenty of company in those that derive pleasure from invoking RAO's name in every thread. By the way, I know many causes that Ida and the odinga family are engaged in. Hope this explains why i had to jump on your case. Ever heard of giving anonymously? Probably not, Anyway, good luck with your obsession with the odinga's - continue searching....just don't come back screamin thief and asking about the wealth that they so willingly share with the 'community.' Good bye.

Mwenzangu Akinyi, Forbearance tafadhali. I think you are now trying to gag me. I dont think Jukwaa is an ukumbi for cheerleaders, NO. And if it is, then I am not one and will blame my initial judgment. If respect is a preserve for only those who follow the crowd then I am glad to lose yours. What exactly does objectivity mean to you? We should always be willing to diasgree without being disagreable. If you are waiting for me to tell you what you want to hear I am sorry I will disappoint you ten fold dada yangu. Hapana haja ya kusukumana ni kama tumo kwenye chombo kinachozama. Just put your case across without imputing wrong motives on me. It does not help wanajukwaa in anyway. Ahsante, Mwalimu.

Recall my comment on your maiden post? It did not last long did it?
I do not agree with Ida's latest appointment. However, I do take exception at your unwarranted attack on the public service credentials of Jaramogi and his son Raila. To be honest, I cannot see anyone in the current and past leadership than can match these two.
Well, if you are going to question the establishment of a community project in the name of Odinga, what is your yardstick for determining who has a moral responsibility of establishing and/or supporting charity projects? And while at it, why not also do them same with Kenyattas, Mois, Kibakis, Kalonzos, Mudavadis, Rutos, Jirongos and all others?
Moi and Kibaki have been at the front of public life for more than half a century and there is nothing they have delivered to kenya other than mystery. You may want to recall schools like Kabarak, Sunshine, Moi Educational Centre were all built and supported by public funding during the reign of Moi but were reverted swiftly to private institutions as soon as Mi retired with a hefty pension courtesy of the same tax paying public. This is just but an example to show you that you have guns trained on the wrong target.
As a long time resident of Kibera in Langata, I can tell you for a fact that we have voted for Raila Odinga in last 3 or so general elections with valid reasons. Perhaps Livondo would have been a better MP, I cannot tell. But we are very satisfied with the delivery of Raila so far. Besides, what is the role of an elected leader in Kenya? Lets start from there.
You are a man on an anti-ODM mission. That is obvious and was clear from your maiden post. I am a proud ODM member and I welcome your criticism but at least make it fair and objective. Give valid examples instead of just throwing empty words of hatred.

Phil,
What if I may ask is wrong with Ida's appointment? What i gather from you and others that are opposed to this is the fact that she is an Odinga, and not because she lacks the qualifications right? Am sure you are aware that not many women made it to the university during her time and a casual glance will reveal the powerful positions that most if not all these women hold in various sectors. Do you want Ida to let her education go to 'waste' by sitti,ng at home cooking and knitting just because she is the PM's wife. Hakuna siku, not with the Ida I know. In case you forget, this is the same lady whose teaching career was cut short during the nyayo era'due to public interest'. I will never forget the brutality with which she was evicted from Kenya high school - all while she was busy preparing us for our Geog P3 exam. Her crime? - being RAOs wife. Need I remind you that all this happened while RAO was a 'nobody' in detention? What an appropriate time it was for the cowards to pounce on the hapless woman and her 3 young kids. As the wife of a 'meer detainee', she wasn't allowed to hold a public job then. Now that she is the PM's wife she still shouldn't hold a public position? I say let Ida pick up from where she left. She has a lot to offer. Even the wabeberu employed her as one of the first black teachers at the then all whites only kenya high school. On a more serious note, don't you think the appointing authority saw the same potential, hence this 'voluntary' appointment?
