Ivory Coast: French soldiers 'hand Gbagbo to rebels' French soldiers have seized Ivorian leader Laurent Gbagbo from his residence and handed him over to the opposition, a Gbagbo aide has said. They reportedly went in after French tanks advanced on the compound in Ivory Coast's main city, Abidjan, following French and UN helicopter attacks. Mr Gbagbo is refusing to cede power to Alassane Ouattara, certified as the winner of the presidential election. UN peacekeepers accuse Gbabgo forces of endangering the civilian population. "Gbagbo has been arrested by French special forces in his residence and has been handed over to the rebel leaders," presidential spokesman Toussaint Alain told Reuters news agency from Paris. News of the arrest was later confirmed by the French ambassador for AFP news agency. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-13039825

I wish Ivorians the very best as they try to resolve this matter. One side had to win and I am glad it is the legitimate side. It seems that the next steps involve imposing conditions that will quickly ensure a return to normalcy and cessation of hostilities. Ivorians must now build institutions, not personalities.
I'm hoping (against hope) that the little Kenyan tyrants, who will be regular guests at the Hague are locking in the lessons from this episode. I am surprised to hear that they are telling their supporters that they 'won'.... the case has not even started!

Look at this embarassement!!!.. titchazThanks for the pic. That is for the ages. Kweli African dictators are something else. Now the fool is headed straight to jail. I hope the other guy doesn't do anything crazy and just let the courts handle him and put him away forever. He would have been better of with a couple bullets in his head. That way he will be gone and no fools will be running around claiming to be his supporters. Now it would be unwise to shoot to him.

Hehehehe!
No sympathies for this buffoon.
Perhaps this is how it could have ended for Kibaki in 2007 had the security forces allowed the ODM million man march.

What a shamefull way to end his presidency. The new world order is here to stay. Raila told him to leave in peace and he resfused, now he is been left high and dry. He now wishes he followed Agwambo`s advice.

A new beginning? Not sure about that…the French just picked their favorite & Installed him…their was no easy solution to the Ivory coast problem…the ‘best case’ scenario was Quattara militarily ousting Gbagbo without French help…
Quattara himself is not this squeaky clean man we keep hearing…’internationally recognized leader’ please…if Ivory Coast had oil & the Gbagbo the villain made easy access of said oil to Americans Quattara would be the one in custody …
I’m no fan of Gbagbo but his Arrest is only a short-term solution afterall he had 46% of the vote…Ivory Coast’s problems in the long term will persist…as long as the French keep seeing it as their colony…

In the home-coming rally for the Ocampo 2 at Uhuru park, Kangundo M.P. Johnstone Muthama was taking a jibe at Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga by telling the crowd how the P.M. decided on his own to go to Ivory Coast to intervene in the crisis and ended up being chased away, to the great amusement of the crowd. Not very long afterwards, the news breaks of what has befallen their friend who supposedly chased away the P.M. The option that the P.M. had placed on the table for Gbagbo now looks to have been very wise to take, and the Gbagbo sympathizers in PNU have ended up with more egg on the face. What a crying shame.

Laurent Gbagbo: A Pictorial Essay Started his career in trade unionism and later clandestinely formed the opposition FPI. Openly went into politics in 1990 when a multiparty system was introduced in Ivory Coast Seen in 1992 after being released from jail following student protests. He was the then leader of FPI (Popular Ivorian Front) But after becoming President in 2000 Mr Gbagbo -pictured here with his wife Simone -adopted draconioan measures to stifle political dissent and manipulated issues on nationality and religion to maintain power. A History Professor by Profession, with a Doctorate from Paris University, Mr Gbagbo was crucial in Ivory Coast's transition to multiparty democracy in the 1980s and 1990s. With former French President, Jacques Chirac in Paris- Gbagbo always maintained the French wanted to oust him because he was standing for the economic interests of the world's largest cocoa producer. And an illustrious career comes to an end in a bunker somewhere in Abidjan....Gbagbo's wife after being arrested in Abidjan..a contrast to the picture above: .... ;D Gbagbo, wife Simone and son Michel

Titchaz,
Gbagbo started on a very promising note. It is really the tragedy of Africa that as soon as people get to power they become monsters. Look at Mugabe. He tooks arms to fight for his country and started on a very positive note before going to war with Nzomo and it went down hill after that. He is shitting on every inch of the country with no shame.
Don't be surprised if five years from now we will need the French soldiers to go dig out Quattara from the same bunker should he lose the election. African presidents never lose an election. For that we need to give Moi credit.
But I feel sorry for his family. Why did the idiot keep them there. He should have let them go some time time back. May be he needed the company of his wife but it is very unfair to them. They have nothing to do with Gbagbo's foolishness. I hope the government leaves them alone and accords them the dignity they deserve. His wife is still the ex-first lady and should be treated with respect.
