Hehehe- The Waheshimiwas think we should applaud them when they finally cough back our hard earned cash- one year after the Katiba ordered them to pay up. They had cunningly waited to see which direction the wind would blow but the wananchi didn't relent in squeezing their $%@#. Hope the other cry babies will shut it and follow suit. Stop being greedy...and...give to the needy! Raila pays Sh3.4m in unpaid taxBy ALPHONCE SHIUNDU, ashiundu@ke.nationmedia.co.ke Posted Monday, June 27 2011 at 13:49 Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Monday paid Sh3.4milion in outstanding tax as he called on other Members of Parliament to follow suit. Gachoka MP, Mutava Musyimi has also paid Sh1.9m as Kenya Revenue Authority piles pressure on MPs to pay up. Mr Odinga said it was not his mistake he had not paid up since August 27 2010 when the new constitution was promulgated and that someone "was sleeping on the job at Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)." He said KRA should have informed Parliament in good time instead of waiting to put MPs in the 'uncomfortable position' of having to pay too much money. "Nobody is above the law. Not even the President or the Vice president," Mr Raila told the press at his office in Nairobi. He urged other MPs to pay in line with the new constitution. Judges have already bowed to pressure and agreed to pay taxes, leaving MPs isolated in their opposition to the move. Chief Justice Willy Mutunga who is not affected by the demand for back taxes by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has asked the taxman to compute the amounts owed by judges. It is understood that the Chief Justice believes that no Kenyan should be exempt from taxation. Like MPs, judges have also been anxious over the taxman’s announcement this week that they are expected to pay tax on their allowances backdated to August 27 last year, the date of the Constitution’s promulgation. KRA has twice attempted and failed to have MPs pay tax. And in both attempts, the efforts were thwarted by court rulings because the old Constitution allowed the exemptions. That is why the President, MPs, commissioners and judges have enjoyed tax exemptions. But this is no longer the case as the new constitution clearly states in Article 210(3) that “No law may exclude or authorise the exclusion of a State officer from payment of tax.” www.nation.co.ke/News/-/1056/1189772/-/10vtps9z/-/index.html

Interesting move on the grand chess board of KE politics by RAO. Siasa kali hiyo. Just saw footage of him patiently queing at Times Towers to pay in the back taxes on NTV. Brilliant! RAO 10 - Baba Jimmy, Less than zero.
Now we wait for the fallout from all sides.

b6kNow queing to pay up is interesting! I wonder what message he is sending out! 'Servant leadership', sorry for stealing that one from mwana wa Tseikuru heheheheheheeeeeee Expect Kalonzo to be on the line at Times Towers any time soon. I think Ruto will send Kutuny to go pay his taxes and Uhuru may send Esther Mirugi to line up at Times. Show time. This is a game changer in Kenyan politics. Kibaki will not pay unless Lucy orders him to do so. May be the Narc activist will pay for him. This katiba is powerful, people. Some people told us it is just a piece of paper and will make no difference. Dead wrong!

Kalonzo is dashing in traffic as we speak to pita kati kati and pay his taxes. What a country we have. No dull moment even on Monday morning when the week looks so long and so intimidating.

It really does not matter whether they queue at Times Towers, send their messengers or mail in a cheque. All we want is for all these thieving leaders to pay us back our money. They have been sitting pretty since August while knowing very well that they were taking the money illegally. It beats logic why a whole president and PM of a republic and their cabinet should refuse to pay taxes. They are the highest paid, the most comfortable and above all, they decide on how to spend the country's revenue. Shame on you Mr. president and Mr. PM.

The good thing with the PMs move here is that for those like Musalia Mudavadi who would have preferred night meetings with the Taxman with pleas to have the debts wiped out, will now not have any alternative but to pay and do so in full. The broke ones like Mbadi, Olago Aluoch and Namwamba are in real trouble.

He is leading from the front. His move has completely destroyed the belligerent campaign by M.Ps to avod paying taxes. That is called leadership. I don't give a shit about Ruto but for Uhuru this is really bad. For beginners as the Finance Minister Uhuru should have been at the for front asking M.Ps to pay taxes and in fact factoring in the Kshs 1 billion tax revenue from M.Ps in his estimates. Being an ignorant jackass, forgive my language, Uhuru did not even think about that part of his job. He scores an F on this and counting. sawa?

Commes, the symbolic act of RAO personaly queing to pay back taxes is pretty clear to all MP's. He has caught them all backfooted. I doubt there was any consultation held with the MP from Othaya who has now been shoved into a tight corner. Of the presidential candidates, one would've expected Martha Karua to pre-empt the other pretenders to the throne given all her reformist talk. She's been oddly silent on this issue.
The political mileage RAO will get from this is huge. Whoever who advised him to queue at KRA, with media in tow, is a master strategist. The timing was perfect, just when the public has had enough of references to secret deals that exempted MP's whilst everyone else is subjected to the yoke of KRA. Even the judges accepted the inevitable, led by a new CJ. Everybody else will be forced to play catch up to RAO. The wily fox has done it again.

No, paying taxes is not a Railamania. It is a legal obligation. I couldn’t help but notice how the intended derailment has been flipped and put back in its proper perspective. I am glad that Mutava and others are doing what they should have done. It would have been an excellent gesture for the Finance Minister and the President to let other taxpayers know that they have met their obligation. They should not be seen as being forced to the taxman. Kibaki is on records for always urging Kenyans to pay their taxes.

Raila (and by extension Mutava) should not think Kenyans are fools. When this debate started long before the constitution, only Muthama and Peter Kenneth agreed to pay their taxes and have done so since.
It is nothing more than cheap politics to come and impress Kenyans that Raila has today paid his taxes. Did he understand the constitution today or he had not read even what he released baloons and doves for in August last year?

Only to also give credit to Martha Karua who declared about 3-4days ago that she will be paying her taxes and that "No one is exempt. "KRA's enforcement is long overdue and should be widely applied" She said dat!

To be honest, the MPs who merit accolades from Kenyans are Peter Ken and Johnston Muthama. They have always met this obligation and led from the front without pressure and/or threats. They have even had to withstand name calling and all. Remember the 'philanthropic enough' talk?

Did he understand the constitution today or he had not read even what he released baloons and doves for in August last year? Bure Kabisa!!! KamaleYou are dead wrong. As far as politics go this is a masterstroke for the PM. The action taken by Raila today will change the entire debate about M.Ps paying taxes. Everybody will pay now. Why? Because Raila Amolo Odinga is the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya. By his action he has taken direct leadership on the matter that leaves no room for others to escape. It did not matter that Peter Keneth or Muthamba were paying taxes. It was good for them. But it matters a million times that the Prime Minister of the republic has lined up to pay his taxes accruing to his earnings in political office as the law requires. Imagine if Kibaki was to line up at Times Towers to pay his taxes! What message would that send to the country? So I know some of you have to oppose everything and anything Raila does but this time he beat you guys rather badly. You are gonna have to suck it up to borrow your own words in another thread. Too bad. Right? That is life and politics. The simple truth is tha the KRA sent notices to the M.Ps. The selfish mob were breathing fire and brimstone and menacing the nation with blockage of reforms and disrupting everything if anybody dared them to pay taxes. The Minister for Justice was all over the map with no direction. The minister of finance had failed in his duty to bring a tax regime and revenue stream from M.Ps. The president was hiding somewhere and then Raila just acted and pretty much put an end to the debate. That is leadership my friend and it is a good thing to see. It is good for our country regardless of our politics. adongo

Akinyi, for the first time I feel that certain persons can no longer ask Kenyans ati mta do? Had we been operating under the old constitution, the MP’s and state officers would have colluded to amend the now infamous Article 210 which makes payment of taxes obligatory for all from 27th August 2010. It is refreshing that the new Constitution protects itself against any mischievous amendments and illegal suspension of already operational clauses. Wata do? The citizens must endorse.

No, I do not hate anyone my sister. I only loathe their hypocricy and their tendencies to take Kenyans for fools. If you read my posts on this thread and other related, I have consistently asked these fellows to obey the law. I even asked here one time why these guys were not paying taxes and I was told, very childishly if you asked me, that they were already paying property tax.
