tnk;
I am so NOT surprised.
There was also report last week about two parallel UDM meetings in Kericho – one led by party officials and the other by MPs. They were accusing each other of imposing leadership & 'strategizing' to defeat each other.
But let us cut to the chase: what did anyone expect of William Ruto? He left ODM because he was unable to compromise in the spirit of party democracy. He could NOT believe that Musalia Mudavadi would be a notch higher than him in party and political hierarchy.
For him it was his way or the highway. Highway it was. With the internal turmoil that Ruto has engendered in UDM, what order can we expect that he will deliver to his supposed political partners?
If you listen to Ruto, as I have done over the past few months, you will be hard pressed to discern any credible ideology or well thought out policy statement. He is forever politicking. You won’t catch Ruto creating or building institutions. You will find him trying to establish a variety of personality and tribal cults: whether it is KKK or G7.
For him, everything has blurred to one agenda: building a tribal coalition against Raila. Unfortunately that agenda is foolish, divisive, myopic, greedy and uninviting for the ordinary Kenyan.

tnk;I am so NOT surprised. There was also report last week about two parallel UDM meetings in Kericho one led by party officials and the other by MPs. Unfortunately that agenda is foolish, divisive, myopic, greedy and uninviting for the ordinary Kenyan. RR and TNK I have struggled to listen and understand the politics according to St. William Ruto and I have to confess, it has been a huge disappointment more so because Ruto (Like one Miguna Miguna) is a rebel without a cause but only desperate to be a Raila clone. Ruto's second home is the corridors of justice, defending himself, buying witnesses or compromising judges. What amazes me most is that there are actually a few pockets of Rift Valley folk who have totally fallen for Ruto's endless antics. They have bought the idea that Ruto is the change they have been waiting for. Whilst I respect right to democratic choice, I find it difficult to even start rating someone who seriously considers William Ruto as a serious presidential contender. Can you imagine one William Ruto, or even worse still a wide-eyed and soon to be auctioned Cyrus Jirongo being sworn in as president of Kenya in Uhuru Park in 2012? God Forbid!

On the funny side let me make a small comment.
In my community, men cry with OOs like... ooooooooooh.....
while women cry with UUs like ... uuuuuuuuuuuih.
Now that ODM as been turned into UDM, has Ruto's cry turned feminine?

Too funny Seriously, let Ruto join/take over that party, we have some questions lined up. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D GRASSROOTS POLLS SPLIT RUTO'S ODM PULLING APART: Ruto with former MP Anania Mwaboza at a rally to promote UDM at Matsangoni in Kilifi yesterday ALL is not well in William Ruto's United Democratic Movement party despite the Eldoret North MP's active promotion of his new outfit. A silent war between MPs backing Ruto against the interim officials is splitting the party. Impending party elections, planned for mid January, are causing friction with MPs demanding to be assured of certain positions.However their rivals, who are not MPs, insist they should occupy the party seats since the lawmakers have refused to formally ditch ODM for UDM. "We are the ones who are drawing crowds to UDM and so we cannot build a party for other people. The party must reserve seats for us and our proxies will hold them for us," said an MP from North Rift who supports Ruto.The UDM has been recruiting across the country in the last two weeks and both groups have been asking their supporters to register massively. The friction is particularly intense between the rebel MPs from Rift Valley and the officials who were running UDM before Ruto and his allies moved in.Interim officials see the ODM rebels as gatecrashers hanging on Ruto's coattails to take over the party. “These rebel MPs have the numbers with them. They have an advantage of being close to Ruto both in and out of Parliament. This has caused fear and anxiety among UDM members,” said a party official who asked not to be named. The MPs are incensed that they will not be allowed to participate in the grassroots party elections since they are still technically ODM members. The MPs fear that their enemies will stuff the party with opponents who might squeeze them out during the 2012 general election. The UDM executive director Sunday Oyolo described the tensions as positive. "This party is growing at a very fast rate and because of this there is stiff competition in many areas. For us this is a sign of democracy," said Oyolo. The emergence of Ruto as the kingpin of Rift Valley politics has catapulted UDM to cult status in the region and there is a mad rush by local politicians to get the party's endorsement for 2012. The UDM chairman Joseph Chirchir denied there was friction in the party. “It is just one person in Kericho who is doing all these things. We know him," said Chirchir He however admitted there were “small squabbles” which he likened to “scientific friction that is necessary for expansion”. “We have become a mass party and such squabbles are necessary,” he told the Star yesterday. “There is a wave in the region over the party. Everyone is interested." Hellen Sambili is the only UDM MP presently in Parliament. Yesterday Oyolo told the Star that the party must submit its recruitment returns to the Registrar of Political Parties by December 15. Only then can the dates for the election be set. Signs of trouble for the Ruto brigade were witnessed recently. Candidates allied to Ruto lost as Ruto rivals took control of the UDM in Kericho county. The MPs allied to Ruto led by Benjamin Langat (Ainamoi) and Charles Keter (Belgut) boycotted the elections at Kericho Tea Hotel in an attempt to block the election of their opponents. However Chirchir and Oyolo said there has never been an election in the UDM. They said what happened in Kericho was an arrangement where party members agreed to put up an interim committee to take care of members' recruitment. www.the-star.co.ke/national/national/52206-grassroots-polls-split-rutos-udm
