Raila Odingas stature has reached a point where in my opinion he doesn’t need to be the president of Kenya to exert his influence.
He has reached a place of political leadership where his cup is “running over”. At this time he faces opposition from the likes of Ruto and Uhuru, but these guys are still being approved rationally, and they are still busy trying to endear themselves to Kenyans by whipping up emotions etc.
It is my conviction that Raila Odinga has passed that stage and his approval rating in entirely on a different scale. I feel that he has transcendend beyond all these and has entered into peoples' psyche.
Thus he has become the standard upon which political leadership is measured in Kenya.
Let me put it like this, Raila Odinga is the kind of leader whose influence in the Kenya political stage is so great that even if he did not vie for the presidency and leave the position of leadership, without use of force or arms he will still influence any decision to be taken or made in the Republic of Kenya.
For good or for bad, this man has entrenched himself in the politics of Kenya to such an extent that no leader in Kenya ,friend or foe can gain any mileage without either antagonizing or simply riding on his surpassing influence.
Raila Odinga is a leader that is hard to replace, within his own community, nationally and even within the African context.
We can all see the obvious gap that exists between him and say Kibaki, Ruto, Uhuru, Kalonzo, Tuju, Mudavadi, all these leaders are still at a very low level of leadership and can easily be replaced within their own communities.
Again for good or for bad, Raila has reached a place where everything around him has become public and his community has no choice but to let him be public commodity.
I strongly believe that if he only sees himself as far as being the president of Kenya, then he will totally be underrating himself and he will go down the annuls of history as an underachiever and a visionless man.
Kenny Rogers a western country music artist long ago sang a song called MUSIC MAN, Part of the lyrics go something like this “YOU ARE A POWERFUL MAN BUT YOU SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO DEMAND SO LITTLE OF YOU”
As I write it is a fact that Raila Odinga holds Kenya political future to the sway of his influence, it is possible that due to ethnic mobilization, Jealousy, fear, and revenge call it “bad politics” he may never be the president of Kenya, but that should not be a worry because his larger than life space could be dwarfed anyway by a presidency that will chain him other than free him to be all he ever could be.
Working with "minnows" to spearhead reforms could prove frustrating for a man of Railas stature.
You may not agree with me, but real potential and real danger exist that will surround his tenure if he were to become president especially more if the opposition will put roadblocks to stifle him with unnecessary bureaucracy.
Because Railas influence is so great, He might perhaps serve the high office better doing two things, one serving the people, and two, mentoring others in leadership.
In my view he has nothing to prove or lose, nothing to hide or hold back and, at the same time everything to give and gain.
Finally 2012 is Kenya’s election year, even as people offer him and prod him with the presidency as an entitlement, the best and the wise thing I believe he can do is, to detach himself from the feeling and the pressure of that entitlement.
Instead he should endeavour to potray a sense of selflessness as he leads Kenyans. Virtues like, to nurture and mentor new leaders, to help humanity, to empower others and to leave a positive, lasting legacy should be at the fore front of his campaign while he is still alive.[/u]
The overall public expectations at this stage has changed, he should re-invent himself, he should or must showcase more wisdom and model to others portraying genuine humility and service, shower more praise and appreciation to people struggling with hard life and concerns and, probably a culmination or a combination of all, a more display of greatness that kisses goodness.
This is a leadership that Kenyans will cherish.
