www.the-star.co.ke/local/western--nyanza/77001-tullow-to-prospect-for-oil-in-nyakachwww.standardmedia.co.ke/?articleID=2000058625&story_title=Oil%20exploration%20firm%20headed%20to%20Nyakach%20nextEven before we get used to the fact that lots of oil lies under Turkana soils, Tullow are launching yet another oil exploration project in Nyakach, Kisumu County. Chances are high that this too could turn out to be successful. Now that it appears the entire Western region of Kenya could be sitting on lots of oil, what are the implications of this. I'm just hoping that the government and the people will not focus too much on the oil and forget that people still need to grow food. Finding oil in Turkana was not problematic because the area is quite underpopulated and there isn't much difficulty in sequestering land for oil exploitation there. In addition, the disruption to human activity due to oil would be relatively manageable. But when we talk about a place like Western Kenya, which is very well-populated and where a significant part of Kenya's food comes from, we need to be very careful how this is managed. Let's see how the drillings in Nyakach go, indications are that the oil there could be much closer to the surface than the Turkana one and the quantities underneath greater than the Ugandan ones. Probably explains what the hulabaloo about Migingo Island was all about.

Great news, I hope that they strike oil there too. Who would have thought that Nyakach of all the places would have oil?
Genius, Im happy that this findings are happening now and not during the nyayo era. Otherwise Moi would have owned 51%, kenya 20% and the to foreign investors.
But as you said, man cannot live on oil alone, he needs food too. Perhaps money from oil could be used in irrigation. I think kenya will be a great country 50 years from now if managed properly. Nobody will be denying you visas left right and center as is the case today.

Just for my own cheeky reasons, I am hoping that oil can be discovered in Uyoma... Mbuta, Do you mean the Uyoma where chaps like Achieng' Oneko come from? Then if you find oil I guess I will always to apologise for falsely accusing Katweng'a hoteliers of inhospitable room rates when no more alternatives to cross the expanse are at hand. You see we are inlaws with you people, real many of our girls 'cook' at yours, and so many of your girls cook at ours! So this small matter of hoteliers should not be allowed to spoil our familial and cordial relations across Dwond Nam. I do not want to be in the bad books of a possible oil tycoon! [Omiyo asayi, Rech Marahiri! O yaye Mbuta wuon Nam! Ng'wonna kik ibi itwona mo!]

Don't worry, I will call a baraza and invite representatives from your Gweng' so that we can iron out any issues...

Oil in Nyakach - if it comes to that - is less likely to be stolen willy nilly as oil in Turkana is wont to.
Not a barrel will leave Nyanza without full accounting and ventilation of all issues. Trust me. The oil will stay safely under Nyakach until the 'all clear' sign is lifted.
Meanwhile, I am waiting to see the revised list of County Administrators, given this new development....
