(Reporting by Kwassi Kpodo; Writing by David Lewis; Editing by Michael Roddy) phil, its a bad year for african statesmen. from malawi to libya and now ghana. the ethiopian strongman,i gather is also battling for his life.but not good old bob mugabe who defiantly saunters into the sunset of his life. ghana, the only country in africa besides egypt, that president obama has visited, is on a cusp of a transition and at a time when the region is fluid. the chinese are triggering xenophobia with wanton exploitation of its resources if the latest media info is anything to go by and so is america's shadows over this model of democracy for africa. my condolences to our brothers and sisters in ghana for losing their democratically elected statesman.

Indeed, condolences to the people of Ghana on this untimely death.
It appears that President Mills was suffering from throat cancer although it is not yet confirmed the reasons for his sudden death - only a few hours after being rushed to hospital.

Very heart-felt condolence to the great people of Ghana. What a blow.
And now, Jerry Rawlings can bulldoze his wife into the presidency!

Jinxed at No. 3
Death comes 3 years into power, 3 days after his birthday. 3rd African Head of State to die (after Guinea-Bissau's Sanah & Malawi's Mutharika in 2012)
Utterly sad. RIP John Atta Mills.

Now this from the BBC,"Mr. Atta Mills has ruled the West African country since 2009". You'll never see the Western Media write that,"Mr. Obama has RULED the United States since...or David Cameron has ruled the UK..".Somehow forgotten is the fact that the gentleman was elected to GOVERN,with checks and balances, a judiciary and a legislature. Maybe am just being too sensitive, but this subtle attempt to make every African leader as some sort of backwater third world dictator ought to stop.

mbuta...i agree with you, it is pathetic. Western Media serve their masters who always want Africa,Asia,Latin America to "stay down there"...but the reality is very soon, we will be talking of "President Abdullah has ruled Belgistan(Belgium) since..." because 55% of newborns in Brussels alone are Arab children, with many of the mothers in their early 20s....The west is a very scared animal...Africa shall rise... RIP Atta Mills

I agree... that one sentence made me cringe. the reality is very soon, we will be talking of "President Abdullah has ruled Belgistan(Belgium) since..." because 55% of newborns in Brussels alone are Arab children, with many of the mothers in their early 20s....The west is a very scared animal...Africa shall rise... As an aside, from the tone of your post it seems that you look forward to the collapse of Europe - am I right?

As there were no signs that the Ghanaians would not eat one another after Mills' death, it was not exactly breaking news in the major networks. A Kibaki death in office would be breaking news for the simple reason someone in the west expects us to pick up machetes and have heads chopped for sport....massive news!

Oh come on, enough with the conspiracy theories. Every international media house covered his death, and now the swearing in of the VP is on the front page of BBC. Kamale has a point. What would Kenyan's do if faced with the same scenario? Mills was running for reelection scheduled in a few months.
God forbid but suppose Raila or Uhuru dies right now, how would Kenyans react? What if Kibaki dies? Would we allow Kalonzo to assume the presidential reigns until March 2013?
For sure, Jukwaa, like many hot spots in Kenya, would be alit.
