Watching the statue of Nelson Mandela at the Nelson Mandela square on wednesday evening, I was quickly reminded that the man had been very sick and the world was not talking about him.
So last night as I sat in my room and Jacob Zuma came on TV to announce the death of Mandela, I walked down to the pub in my hotel in Sandton and there I met some Kenyans and the discussion began about the life of Mandela.
As we mourn the loss of a great man we should not lose focus on the unfinished business he started and I can only hope that the country will come out more united to complete hi dream of a united SA!

Madiba was indeed a son of Africa and any attempt by snipers from DC forum to co-opt him to their lost cause should not remain unchallenged. This is a sad day for Africa and the world as a whole. Trying to pigeon box Madiba in KE politics context is an insult to his memory in my view. He was way above the banana vs orange fruit salad bowl... RIP Mandela. At 95 you gave it a good innings...

Bono of Band Aid fame had this to say although I think he was a tad prone to hyperbole when he said: " Without Mandela, would Africa be experiencing its best decade of growth and poverty reduction? His indispensability can’t be proved with math and metrics, but I know what I believe …"

Statement by the International Criminal Court on the passing of Nelson Mandela The International Criminal Court (ICC) joins with the people of South Africa, the African Continent and as well as the international community in mourning the passing of Mr Nelson Mandela, former President of the Republic of South Africa and a global voice for justice and equality. It was on 17 July 1998, during Mr Mandela’s Presidency, that South Africa became one of the first ten signatories of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. “We have sought to ensure that the ICC is guaranteed independence and bestowed with adequate powers. Our own continent has suffered enough horrors emanating from the inhumanity of human beings towards human beings. Who knows, many of these might not have occurred, or at least been minimised, had there been an effectively functioning International Criminal Court”, he said. Even during his 27 years of imprisonment, Mr Mandela never lost hope that a transformation from injustice to justice would take place in South Africa and around the globe. His long walk to freedom changed the world forever and millions of people from diverse backgrounds and life situations celebrate and recognize his significance in the shaping of a more humane global citizenry. Mr Mandela acknowledged the importance of an international court in that process, as well as its potential for the prevention of future human suffering. While the cascade of justice has yet to spread everywhere, the spirit of Mr Mandela continues to inspire us to reach that goal, and the ICC continues its work to help prevent impunity for the most serious crimes of international concern and to realise a safer future for all. Though the world has lost one of its greatest architects of justice, freedom and equality, his legacy remains profound and lasting. www.icc-cpi.int/en_menus/icc/press%20and%20media/press%20releases/Pages/pr971.aspx

He did not see his presidency as an opportunity to enrich, reward himself fabulously. A state monk the disciplined mental caliber the like of Ho Chi Minh. Immune to the seductions of earthly acquisitions. ---In modern Afrika, a divine feat befitting a deity.
He quit power voluntarily at a time he was worshiped like a demi-god. A unicum anywhere in the world where even once genuine leaders overstay they welcom, and become scum. Look at the thing that used to be Robert Mugabe!now but dead litter of Afrika and a boil on the face of Zimbabue. Mandela shows us just how much of a vegetable a curiosity like comrade Robert has degenerated into.
Preaching unity, he managed to convince the black enraged majority not to go for the ripping off the hearts of their fellow white countrymen in revenge for the crimes of apartheid. Held his country together at a treacherous time, with the risk of providing mirage solutions to real problems. Fundamental and irreconcilable antagonisms remaining intact while the nation pretends to be at ease with itself. Merely Postponing the moment of truth. Time will tell.
But all in all, as close to a living god as a human can come. Fare thee well, Rohilalah Madiba.

Surely, this is not the sort of thread on which to trade blows. I encourage people to reflect deeply on the nature of the man, and, if they have the courage, to delete certain comments.

With colleagues in our Joburgh office we raised 2,500 Rands to buy flowers as a tribute to the life of Mandela by our company. The flowers were taken to Nelson Mandela Square by representatives from the office. Later in the afternoon we had a rousing Christmas party with both white and black staff giving their views about Mandela and the effect he had on their lives. Bar a few white folks who could not seem bothered, majority had some really kind words for him.
As commerce seems an integral part of our society, I was amazed seeing this large chinese group at breakfast wearing I love Mandela lapel badges and wondered how quickly people can react when they see a business opportunity! ANC flags and T-shirts are selling like hot cakes.
Flying back home later today for our own celebration at the end of the week.....

I am told Uhuruto will not attend the the funeral of Madiba. If true, it is a poor decision.

Kamale, This culture of spending money to buy flowers, which will soon after dry up and wither to waste, is sooo alien and a waste of good money. If you ask me, it is better to spend the money towards helping some opharned kids or a charity of some sort, in the name of the deceased legend.
Wishing you, family and friends a very Happy Chistmass.

Wishing you, family and friends a very Happy Christmass. Abdulmote Thanks for the Christmas wishes!! You are absolutely right about the flowers, but it does appear to be the thing attracting the South Africans. Someone on twitter actually raised this same issue questioning who between children and flowers Mandela loved most and the suggestion was that instead of buying flowers, donations be made to the Nelson Mandela Childrens Hospital! The South Africans have an interesting view of the world! On Friday morning when the documentaries on the icons life were being aired, the strap line on the private E News channel had condolences from many people. What was interesting was the order in which they were lined up...Obama, Cameron, Tony Abott of Australia, Stephen Harper of Canada, Christian Ronaldo, Raphael Nadal, Jonathan Goodluck, and back the breaking news on the death of Mandela. I do not believe that only the Nigerian president had been awake to send his condolences, and all others including our own were asleep and would only send their condolences later! What came to mind was this attempt at the west wanting to 'own' Mandela when he dies but were never there to save him from prison and the harsh life he had to endure to bring freedom to S Africa. His African comrades and the African people that stood with the Africans do not seem to have a 'share' in Mandela which is a real shame!
