Yes and no. If sexual orientation was an essential part of a person's public life, then it sure ought to be mentioned. If no, then only the usual comments about the surviving life partner (who may have been of the same or the opposite gender), friends and family (born family or chosen family) will be expected there.

I see where you are at. The gentleman in question I gather was gay but not in a public way and certainly not activist about it... so why say he is gay.
I am very public about my being straight (in fact, I am homophobic) but I'm not sure anyone will ever write these lines: Here lies roughrider, he was ramrod straight...
