International Freedom of Expression Exchange Clearing House (Toronto) PRESS RELEASE September 16, 2005 Posted to the web September 16, 2005 The Media Institute has published a book examining the effects of Kenya's stringent media laws on freedom of expression in the country. "Media Law and Practice" (2003) analyses the laws and their interpretation by Kenya's judiciary in relation to recent cases where heavy fines were imposed on media outlets for libel, Media Institute says. "This book reviews the many attempts by the Kenya government to rewrite the law to gag, rather than facilitate, the Press over the last decade." "Media Law and Practice" also examines media laws from countries in the Commonwealth and East Africa, as well as in the United States.
