· A Kenyan political scientist based in the United Kingdom wrote an interesting article, concerning the hug between the PM and the DPM and Finance Minister, at the funeral service of Prof. Wangari Maathai, and the same was carried in one of the Dailies, today (13th October, 2011). Onyango said, inter alia: “When Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta hugged Prime Minister Raila Odinga, many were taken aback by the warm embrace between the two political rivals. Uhuru’s act was the epitome of political maturity. It was a warm hug from a true Kenyan patriot ready to embrace his political foes for the sake of unity and peace. It was a clear demonstration of who Uhuru is and what he stands for.
· Uhuru has shown that he can work with all Kenyans and does not keep grudges. He demonstrated that Kenyans can co-exist and live peacefully despite the challenges and various competing interests. Uhuru was able to embrace Raila who, rightly or wrongly, is blamed for the post-election violence (PEV). If you juxtapose this with Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka and Water Minister Charity Ngilu’s encounter then you truly understand that Uhuru is a true nationalist.
· Ngilu snubbed Kalonzo because she blames the VP for allegedly being behind her woes. She extended her rivalry with Kalonzo to a national function where the world was bidding farewell to Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai. Never mind that Ngilu has not even been prosecuted only her friends and son-in-law, unlike Uhuru who faced Confirmation of Charges at the ICC but can still afford a broad smile to his detractors. Consider also that Uhuru had just hours earlier jetted in from ICC.
· During his defence, Uhuru turned the heat on Raila and said he (the PM) bore political responsibility for the violence. He said he was a peace-maker who was preaching peace to end the violence, which Raila could have easily averted had he not used strong language and called for mass action. This caused unease in Raila’s camp and it was said the PM was planning to counter the accusation. Many people think he should also have been called to The Hague.
· In many ways, Uhuru’s act recalls Independence Day when the founding President Jomo Kenyatta (Uhuru’s father) asked Kenyans to forgive, but not forget what the colonialists did to them. Many Kenyans had vowed “revenge”, but Kenyatta warned against such acts. But, Mzee Kenyatta knew that for the benefit of unity, peace and tranquility all Kenyans needed to feel accommodated. It is now clear that Uhuru is a chip off the old block and a testimony that the apple does not fall far from the tree.
· Consider the reverse. What if Uhuru had snubbed Raila and those images beamed across the media? It would have caused great tension, because Uhuru and Raila are today’s biggest political players…Indeed, if the political rivals were able to hug at the height of the 2007/2008 post-election violence (PEV), Kenya might never have tottered on the brink of a precipice…”

Raila had a choice of either giving a hand shake, snub Uhuru, or hug him, here the big man is Raila, even though Uhuru has been bushing Raila everywhere he goes, the list is endless. So please, its Raila who is a nationalist, even though a criminal suspect, Uhuru is accused of funding and planning the killing of many Raila's supporters, he might be found guilty and yet Raila gave him a hug.

As far as political bear hugs go. I am a cynic from the school of historical realism. They are all comedies, political theater. And I enjoy that.
When Josef Stalin lay dying, Beria [the murderous head of security later KGB] came to his death bed, and fell upon him in tears. Then grief stircken he ordered everybody out except the good doctor. --Make sure the old rascal is good dead, he told the doc! Suddenly Stalin rose up and held his hand: Beria, I am really dying! Let this be a death you do not have to lie about! Then you better die now, Beria replied matter of factly.
My other favourite embrace is not the Judas kiss, but the public one between Brutus and Marcus Antonius to calm the nerves of Romans after the murder of Julius Ceasar. But Antony whispered in the ears of Brutus: I will sink my sword slowly down your throat, and kiss your eyes shut in death. By Junus! I swear to avenge the death of Ceasar stab for stab. Then both smiling, he turned and raised Brutuss' hands aloft, and the Romans hailed loud! HAIL HAIL!
I think the embrace between UK and RAO was of old Roman make! Up to the words!
Women tend to be emotionally more honest in public life. Lucy Kibaki snubbed Mateere in public. Winnie Mandela nearly spoilt the first banquet between De Klerk and Mandela when she poured soup on him and called him a butcher! Margret Thatcher refused to have the German flag at her side during a state visit to chancellor Kohl and the signing of mutual pacts. Being a man, I prefer hypocrisy to honesty in public affairs. So I condemn Ngilu and praise the two Romans! Even as I suspect this rivalvry between the two prinses has the omens of a bloody resolution.

This is vintage news propaganda emanating from camp/team Uhuru.
You note that while Uhuru is being portrayed as mature, Ngilu on the other hand is being vilified for refusing a handshake that was not even offered. Just the other day, another propagandist was telling us here in Jukwaa it is Raila who bear-hugged Uhuru.
I just want to repeat. These events were beamed live on all channels across the country. Wananchi saw them and they will draw their own conclusions out of what they saw transpiring in Uhuru park.

This is total propaganda. How I miss Miguna Miguna. Currently nobody can rebutt such nonsense and lies.
I find the above article very immature. It attempts to put Uhuru on the pedestal, as the good guy who came back from The Hague to embrace his “enemy”. Right there we have the big lie and the useless assertion. Truth be told, it’s Uhuru Kenyatta who went to The Hague to bad mouth Raila Odinga. After killing people in Naivasha he tried to put the blame on Raila. End of story.
It therefore goes without saying that it’s Raila who should have snubbed Uhuru Kenyatta and not the opposite. But that’s the nature of this man Raila Odinga; he holds no grudge against people.
As for Ngilu, I think she did the right thing by snubbing the pretentious back stabbing Kajudas Musyoka. The man is known for saying one thing and doing the other.

I agree with Merkeju that Raila was the bigger man in this "made for TV" hug of the titans. However, Jakaswanga is more on point as to the TRUE nature of the hug as far as both RAO & UK are concerned. That was a very "Roman" hug for public consumption whilst the war continues simmering on in the background. As to Jakaswanga's conclusions RE women politicians (or bigwigs' spouses), I'm sure the gender police will soon come calling

Having said so that hug was absolutely nothing politically for it is for two men with little respect for one another. If guys want to consume that...have a ball!

As to Jakaswanga's conclusions RE women politicians (or bigwigs' spouses), I'm sure the gender police will soon come calling Dear bobby,I am retired from controversies of that nature after a near miss with the blade! I caught Oloo in full sword-swing coming at me, then Niclasclause was, bless his soul, foolish enough to dash in between! Taming Oloos bloodthirst for that day! Meanwhile there is a live movie running on another thread, starring amadain, on the use of a word which, if you add cat to it, is not a sub-species of a domestic animal which miaws! And all the action is there!

In my view that hug was precipitated by guilt. Its akin to the "kiss of Judas" Its not for any emotional connection, its not for anything other than hey, "I have to do what I have to do, even though I know that am not doing the right thing" It is the kind of hug that confirms the battle lines. These two are cut from different stones in politics and leadership styles

Its one of those threads that will end up with a body posture 'expert' telling us that based on body posture, pressure of the squeeze and position of eyebrows, we can all be certain that raila was being genuine and Uhuru was faking. Normally, I just read this stuff and laugh. However, Mzee takes it to another absurd mile. According to Mzee; Raila is great because he holds no grudge and hugs his enemies. Ngilu is also great because she hates her enemies and does not hug them in public. as in popeye; its the Tails I win, Heads you lose logic

We've already got used to this fallacy..example: ''we shall not accept results if they are rigged''...meaning... If the tin god wins, they shall accept the results. But if the tin god loses, then the results must have been rigged.

This article is shamefuly displaced
Ngilu reacted very correctly. Kalonzo didn't offer her his hand. He just slimmed it slowly passed her waiting for her to jump to it. She did the right thing by ignoring him.
As for Rila and Uhurus Hug, eh guys, you forget where Raila was schooled? In Russia al men of the statel kiss one another, Uhuru is lucky he didn't get a full mouth smack

Raila studied in East Germany... And who was the ruler of East Germany? Hehehe. Kasuku there's no doubt that East Germany was a USSR satellite state. However I doubt the Ruskies political influence translated into cultural influence to the extent that your alleged full on lips man smacks would've been adopted by the East Germans. What's interesting to note is that RAO studied in E. Germany (then called the German Democratic Republic) when it was crawling knee-deep with Stasi & KGB agents. The concern by most run-of-the-mill KE capitalists who adopted Western European (or even American) democratic models is that RAO's democratic ideals were heavily influenced by his stint in a most un-democratic GDR. This is why Ranneberger was so quick to accept a Kibaki victory in '07.
