Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi stands a better chance to win the presidency in the next General Election if he becomes the flag bearer of his coalition pact.
In the latest opinion polls by Strategic Insight, survey showed Mudavadi’s candidature in the TNA-URP-UDF pact would get 49 per cent support while Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s candidature in the ODM-Wiper-Ford Kenya pact would get a 41 per cent support.
However, if Uhuru Kenyatta clinches the coalition ticket, he would lose to Raila in the March 4 elections.
The pollster’s Strategic Researcher Fazul Mahammed, while releasing the results yesterday, said a Mudavadi candidature would win overwhelmingly in the first round of the elections.
“Mudavadi emerged the presidential candidate to beat in the next General Election,” he said. “This was illustrated by the respondents in the seven regions covered as not having a tribal tagging.”
The three-day research was conducted from Wednesday to Friday last week and involved 1,874 respondents in seven regions.
Favourite candidate
The seven political units included Mombasa, Machakos, Kisumu, Nakuru, Garissa, Kakamega and Nairobi.
According to Mahammed, the sampled analysis showed that other aspirants were not favoured in specific areas.
In the two scenarios, which narrowed down to either a race between Raila and Uhuru or Raila and Mudavadi, he said Raila would defeat Uhuru in a tight race with 47 per cent against 43 per cent.
“This will be a tightly contested presidency. Each will get overwhelming support from specific regions,” he said. However, in the second scenario, pitting Mudavadi against Raila, it will be a 49 per cent against 41 per cent.
“Majority will back Mudavadi as compared to those of the Premier,” he said. Surprisingly, the research revealed that despite more than 40 MPs from central Kenya maintaining Uhuru is their favourite presidential candidate, the ground shows otherwise
