How Western capitals deal with Kenya under Kenyatta and his government will depend on whether he and his running mate William Ruto, who is also indicted, work with the tribunal. Western capitals were swift on Saturday to applaud Kenya's peaceful vote but avoided mentioning Kenyatta, whose election they had said would complicate relations because of the charges of crimes against humanity he faces. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said America had longstanding ties with Kenya, and "will continue to be a strong friend and ally of the Kenyan people". He congratulated the people of the east African country for holding a peaceful vote uk.reuters.com/article/2013/03/09/uk-kenya-election-idUKBRE9261FM20130309One essential thread in the concept of democracy has been a radical faith in the ability of the "common person" to help shape the social world in which we live. Another key strand embedded in the idea of democracy has been the revolutionary premise that each person had the own ability to connect directly with the Divine. Again, the image of the "Divine" prevalent earlier may not be the image many of us share today. Nonetheless, the notion of an unmediated personal connection to Spirit remains a revolutionary premise, one that is both problematic and full of promise. www.collectivewisdominitiative.org/papers/zubizarreta_democracy.htm

Do tell us about this other deepening of democracy and social justice that you talk about that is being prevented by 'mere electioneering' Pray, Where were you in the 1980's? Can you compare Kenya then and Kenya now? What do you think we have been doing all this years? All we have been doing is fighting for democracy and social justice! Why did we pass a new constitution with a progressive bill of rights? Why did we reform the judiciary? Why are we demanding a reform of the police? Is that all 'mere electioneering'? And anyway is electioneering necessarily separate from deepening democracy and social justice? Most importantly why do we demand a government FREE of impunity, NOT led by INDICTED CRIMINALS? Ask yourself jaloka, why is one group celebrating a Jubilee of disease, ignorance, penury and utter backwardness while another demands further Reforms and Democracy? Please, do NOT, for even ONE second, dismiss or downplay the importance of free, fair and issue driven elections as a central part of the agitation for social justice and democracy. Elections only come once every 5 years and they are a critical part of national development discourse and yes, democracy and social justice. Choices that we make during elections, have consequences.
