Habari wanajukwaa. Its been a few good years since I contributed in this forum. However I have been lapping up the digital essays of Onyango Oloo and the erudition of one Jakaswanga anonymously on a very regular basis. Hats off to you two. I have however been jolted and spooked by this congress that is going on in Kenya whose main target (although clothed in some very seemingly noble objectives)is to begin the codification of all the species of flora found in Kenya and then post the details online (declared one Professor Mwachala, a Don at UON). aetfat.wordpress.com/blog/home/introduction-to-aetfat-2017/Our country is littered with incidents where items that are authentically Kenyan have been stolen and patented in other jurisdictions with much as an acknowledgement of the true origin. Now you can imagine all our plant species well identified, codified and mapped for any crook out there to find his way into the village and make off with a leaf or two (in reality that's all you need to discover the principles within a plant which are responsible for the utility of the plant by the locals). A case in point is the development of TIDE detergent from knowledge gained from Lake Bogoria. TIDE is either the number 1 or 2 detergent worldwide but the community surrounding Lake Bogoria have never received a dime and yet their resources were very instrumental to this discovery of a biodetergent. www.tide.com That is as articulate as I can be on this subject at this moment. I want to compose a piece for the papers with a bit more meat. Am typing this on the train from work.
