A grenade attack on a nightclub in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, has left 14 people injured, say police.
The grenade was throw in the club early on Monday morning - the motive was not immediately clear.
The attack comes a week after Kenya sent troops into Somalia to track down members of the militant group al-Shabab, which Nairobi blames for a series of kidnappings in recent weeks.
Al-Shabab had threatened reprisal attacks if the troops did not leave.
The al-Qaeda-linked Islamist group, which controls much of southern and central Somalia, has denied carrying out any abductions.
Last week, Kenya announced it would carry out a major security operation in Nairobi to flush out al-Shabab sympathisers once its Somali

Today the Kenya's spirit has been wounded. On behalf of every Kenyan, we would like to extend our simpathy and prayers to the victims, the families and friends of the victims, of the terrorist attack that occured this morning in Mwauras club in Nairobi. Make no mistake about the message we are sending to terrorism this morning by geting out and going our business as alway. And that message is quite simply that we will not live our lives in fear. The citizens of our cities are not afraid. The citizens of Nairobi are, indeed, not afraid. And, by God, the citizens of The Republic of Kenya are not afraid. For we are a proud people. Proud of who we are. Proud of our nation -And damn proud to be Kenyans. And we will fight. We will fight for our families, we will fight for our rights, And we will fight for our great nation. The Kenyan's heart has been wounded ....but her spirit shines as a beacon of freedom that never has been nor ever will be extinguished. God bless Kenya. Today the Kenya's spirit has been wounded. Mumsy called me early this morning to warn me what she had heard on a vernacular FM station, that "a bomb had been thrown on buildings in Nairobi" and so I should be careful and avoid congested places etc.
"Do all you can to keep yourself safe from these terrorists, Kenya is at war!" Mumsy yelled from the other end of the line to make sure every word had sunk in my head.
I told her nothing much would change in my life, I would still go to those places with big crowds be it clubs, church, markets, buses etc. I finished our conversation by saying that if I change my life that drastically and curtailed my freedom then it means I would have handed victory to these scumbag terrorists. Why should I lock myself in the house for fearing them?
"Just be safe coz you can even argue with a river!" She hung up as we finished our talk. Mumsy is the most caring person in the world, I know that much.
"Argue with a river?" That's a new one to me, I think she meant going against the flow.
Life must go on!

OO, the last paragraph in your link reads as follows: "There have been small sporadic explosions including grenade attacks in Nairobi in recent years by unknown assailants." Everybody would agree that explosives, especially grenades, have featured prominently in Kenya of late. Remember the "NO" rally at Uhuru Park, or the training dud of a grenade at the office of the PM recently? Were those Al Shabaab attacks? Here are 2 different periodicals that have run the same AP story yet Salon (of USA) has deleted the last paragraph which is key: www.salon.com/2011/10/24/grenade_blast_at_pub_in_kenyas_capital_wounds_12/?mobile.html...whilst the Arab News have left it unedited: arabnews.com/world/article523531.eceThis morning's bombing does not meet the criteria of a viable target as spelled out by the US Embassy last week. It was a local joint in "downscale" Nairobi probably selected because the collateral damage therein would not affect the who's who but its effect could justify the on-going action up north & any security swoop as is imminent in Eastleigh any day now. It's the oldest trick in the book. Keep the populace in fear & you can easier trample on their rights. It's plain old Dubyah 101...

I have a feeling this "club" should not have been operating in the wee hours of the morning when the attack occurred. With all due respect, it looks like one of the many illegal drinking dens located on various back streets unless it's licensed to operate 24 hours which is highly unlikely. If it should have been closed when the attack happened, why did the police patrolling this dingy area NOT enforce the law? There's more than meets the eye here. Could it common criminals behind this attack? Where's the evidence that the crime was committed by Somali terrorists? Remember we have been here before when a grenade was lobbed at the infamous Simmers and also Uhuru Park during the NO campaign. In the former''s case, it turned out that it was just a turf war, the guy owner of that joint has refused to leave for years bearing in mind half of the premises is some car park.

NEWS BREAKING Explosion reported at Jack Jill Supermarket Racecourse road 8pm local time, people injured 3 in critical condition. Grenade reportedly lobbed into a crowd. When these grenade attacks start coming this way, then there will be obvious xenophobia against the somali community which is something that will not augur well for our country. I can imagine people seeing a somali and even if they are innocent, they will be suspected of preparing to lob a grenade and there will be nasty scenes coming up......I am afraid.

As JUKWAA's foremost war-hawk who went cheering Kenya's misguided invasion of Somalia, I find it baffling that you now proclaim you are afraid...of consequences like Xenophobic attacks against Somalis. Didn't you anticipate this when you cheered the illegal incursion? Somalia's head of State has already disowned Kenya's invasion of its territory. That significant development will have serious consequences. Kenya's incursion is therefore not welcome by both al Shabab and the Transitional government. Don't things start sounding more like the other great bungling of the similarly misguided war in Iraq. Kenyans need to realize that Xenophobia against the Somali community won't help achieve anything. We have a sizeable Kenyan Somali population (bigger than either communities of the Kisii or the Meru). I have no doubt Kenyans won't easily fall into the dangerous route towards mob rule or Xenophobic-driven tyranny. In the other thread where Oloo analyzes ramifications of this misguided war, you claim the latter is ignorant. You also rubbish the citation he provides from a Somali analyst. Obviously, you must have missed the important argument being advanced that control of territory in Somalia is currently shared between Shabab and Transitional Federal Government. The former had more regional control, but is only temporarliy ceding ground due to effects of famine and drought. That is probably a tactical shift by al Shabab. As they give room to Kenyans to advance through their territory; while civilian Somalis run into Kenya; al Shabab will very likely deploy the infamous guerrila tactics witnesses in Iraq for the last decade. They will likely focus on a guerrilla terror campaign both in Kenya and Somalia; aimed at sowing fear throughout Africa's horn. These are the direct consequences of our country's failure in leadership! We even had a vacant M. o. Foreign Affairs for a whole year (no Minister, no PS). Why has the so called commander-in-chief who ordered this misguided war NOT done the more prudent thing - freezing assets of Somali warlords and pirates in Kenya? All the major players in the turmoil have sizeable assets in Kenya. You can guess who they are in bed with. Bure kabisa!

KTN and Daily Nation's facebook pages are awash with calls to clamp down on Eastleigh, flush out all the Somalis, don't transact business with them etc. etc... have these two grenade attacks been linked to Al-Shabab? Were the perpetrators even of Somali origin? I feel sorry for the average "Somalian Joe" earning an honest living in Kenya. If the facebook comments are anything to go by he's in for a hard time ahead.

Kamale a war-hawk?
All I can tell you is that "cowards die many times before their death, but gallant me....."
So we were supposed to tuck ourselves in our corner because there would be several attacks in Nairobi? Call me a war hawk, but one thing that is clear is that the action against al shabaab was called for and I refuse to sit with the minority and their misguided view of how Kenya should be a coward! The attacks in Nairobi fortify that action!
FYI I read the statement from the Somali "President" but there is no where he was explicit about disowning Kenyas action! Read and understand the audience and concerns and I do not believe that means being disowned as the media tries to paint it!

Job, your missive is not entirely accurate. MOFA was not vacant for a year. Saitoti doubled up as minister for 10 months whilst career diplomat Ambassador Patrick Wamoto held fort as PS in an acting capacity. Although Saitoti did practically nothing (which is what the majority of line ministers do anyway), Ambassador Wamoto took charge of MOFA as PS's do. You may recall his press conference when KE Embassy staff in Japan had to relocate the office temporarily from Tokyo to Osaka while their dependents were evacuated back home after the Japan earthquake/tsunami/nuclear disaster struck.

This comes hours after another explosion claimed two lives early in the day, barely 100 metres from OTC. More coming...www.nation.co.ke/News/-/1056/1261146/-/10e5r6sz/-/index.html

I may not have the exact time the Ministry was bereft of a substantive Minister & PS so I'd rather not engage in splitting hairs. Whether it was 9, 10 or 12 months, what I know is that an acting Minister of Foreign Affairs DOES NOT HAVE SUBSTANTIVE POWERS to undertake all obligations in that Ministry. So is an acting PS. It's also quite obvious that Saitoti's dual role as Minister of the demanding portfolio of Internal Security & Provincial Administration PLUS acting in Foreign Affairs had a consequential effect in leadership performance of both Ministries. The results speak for themselves. Some of these Ministries are too crucial to be left to the whims of cheap parochial politics or the casual lack of sense of urgency that was too common in the yesteryears.

Call me a war hawk, but one thing that is clear is that the action against al shabaab was called for and I refuse to sit with the minority and their misguided view of how Kenya should be a coward! The attacks in Nairobi fortify that action! Yup, a reactive war hawk! Tucking in a corner isn't the only option apart from war. Jumpin headlong into war may sometimes be more, an act of stupidity rather than bravery. The attacks in Nairobi are very likely a consequence of the misguided knee-jerk reaction. Time will tell. I read and understood the statement quite correctly. The President has probably realized that the moment a foreign army invades Somalia, then Somali nationalism trumps all other considerations. He will in fact disown the exercise even more vigorously and ask our troops out, to safeguard his standing with the public. Might be too late. Let's see where this misguided action takes us.

I am no fan of wars, and I do not glorify the current one, but it is ridiculous that anybody would pretend that we had no danger in Al Shabaab till we declared war on them.

Kenyans are not going to sit around with tails in between their legs as these guys reign havoc. To me the strategy so far is good. Chase Al Shabaab into the thin air, secure your border, then smoke those in Nairobi out. You cannot start on Nairobi when their supply lines are still intact as they were. We are in total support of our men and women in uniform. Those who want to exile because of Al Shabaab, are free to do so.
