How bad is domestic violence in Kenya

A lobby that fights for the rights of male victims of domestic violence says its officials will camp in central Kenya for three months to help deal with piling cases of domestic abuse.

Maendeleo ya Wanaume chairman Nderitu Njoka said his plate was full, trying to help battered men get legal redress to pull out of abusive marriages.

“Central Province is the worst place because women are in the habit of beating up their men. We are here to give women the ‘red card’ that such behaviour has to come to an end,” he told the Nation at the Nyeri Provincial General Hospital on Wednesday.

“Men should be respected as family heads, but in Central Kenya, they have been reduced to the role of fathering children before they are dumped,” he said.

The rising cases of single parenthood, where women are taking it upon themselves to raise children by themselves, and the piling divorce cases are testimony to the sad state of affairs, according to Mr Njoka.

Nursing his wounds at the hospital on Wednesday, Mr Kevin Muriuki, 22, swore he would end his six-year marriage over what he termed torture from his wife.

The hotel waiter from Skuta Estate is among many husbands in Central Province who claim they have been battered by their wives.

Mr Muriuki showed injuries he said were sustained, including a swollen back, seemingly the result of several whip lashes.

His head also had bumps, and he was limping after three men descended on him. His accusing fingers are pointing at his wife, a 21 year-old beautician, whom he claims hired his attackers.

“All this has been orchestrated by my wife who had accused me falsely of beating up our first-born child,” he said.

But on Thursday, when the Nation reached the woman he alleges hired goons to beat him up, Ms Magdalene Wamaitha said she had nothing to do with the attack on her husband.She says she saw a neighbour enquiring from her daughter what had happened after she noticed the girl’s head was swollen.

I guess with the economic strains being experienced by the

families this problem is on an alarming phase.

Should we consider having a Ministry of Family Affairs;

like lets say a country like Germany

As the constitution says; The family is the basic social unit and it

must be protected and natured !

I thought we were past this nonesense that anyone could abuse another just because they can. we know that some men are mistreating their women but still it does justify this kind of retaliation. I dont think that is what Kathures meant. You state "men used to abuse women" as if that is ancient practice . As we speak, countless women continue to suffer silently in the hands of men with no one to speak on thier behalf.

Truth of the matter is, women have been suffering for many years, some loosing thier lives under domestic abuse but most never make headline news. A few men get beaten up and suddenly there is an uproar, why the double standards.

I am in no way condoning what happened, every life is important and should be treated as such. I live in a small Kenyan community in the west, where not too long ago, we burried a mother and her two lovely children slain by thier own father, an alcoholic, who could not live with the fact that his wife was separating from him.

The problem is much bigger than meets the eyes.

My point was, no one has the right to abuse another. you pointed out "used to", this was both ways , men were also being abused by women then, it was something that none talked about coz it would make them less of a man in their world. The world has changed and this is something that we should all be working to contain and I know women have suffered more in the hands of men.

Some women can be evil. They often torment their men with psychological battering - stripping off the men dignity with obscene words and/or behavior.

Actually apart from the big muscular body, the men get to fear such women and that could lead many to drinking in order to get courage to hit back.

Anyway, Domestic violence shouldn’t be a blame game. It is a serious matter that brings curse to generations and generations of the family.

you must be aware that the majority of domestic violence victims are women right? this is my reaction to the outrage (by the fellas ;D) on reports about the relatively small percentage of men being thwacked.

Hey, I am not trying to apportion blame and i totally agree with your view that domestic violence is an epidemic that affects both men and women.

All i noted is that alcoholism seems to be a major trigger and the aggrieved need to go easy on the bottle.

Akinyi, if men from Central are not up to the task & virility is all it's about, then outsource men from the rest of KE.

If that's not allowable, then the ladies there need to write up an MOU with KQ stewardesses & start importing certain items. Batteries are not included...
