The CJ can still buy a copy of the book for his library.

Responding to Dr Mutunga’s statement on Monday evening, Mr Miguna said: “He had accepted the invitation. It seems there was too much pressure. I understand and empathise with the CJ. The launch proceeds as planned.’’
Either Mutunga or Miguna is lying. Your guess is as good as mine.
But all is not lost. If the CJ is not attending the launch of the comic book simply because he has not seen the cartoons therein, why wont Miguna simply deliver an advance copy today? It's still 11 days to the launch… and I'm sure the CJ is a quick reader.
As things stand, Miguna seems caught in his wide web of lies. Not only must he conjure up a new set of lies to mask the original lies, but he must also issue a new set of invitation cards.
I'm loving it.

Wise move by the CJ. His reputation would have been in tatters after the launch of Migunas book. Omwenga, thanks for starting this campaign and saving the CJ from ridicule. Thanks Mzee.Brother OO and Anyango, I truly and sincerely don't see this as a win/lose situation for the reasons I have been trying to give. We all want Dr. Mutunga to succeed as our Chief Justice and where we see he is about to make a mistake as in this case, I think it's incumbent upon us to at least point that out and let the good justice use his judgment and wisdom to do the right thing as he has here. Some things are better avoided than fixed and this is one of them so it's a win win if one must look at it from that angle. I posted the blog below prior to reading these comments... I commend our Chief Justice as I hope we all do for his decision to turn down an invitation from Miguna Miguna to be his guest of honor in the launch of his controversial book. By turning down the invitation, the Chief Justice is upholding the high standard of honor and integrity he, the Supreme Court and the Judiciary must adhere to at all times in the new Kenya as we embark on the necessary reforms to transform our institutions. This, indeed, is another step further in that direction and if there is any lesson learned from this brief debate we have had as to whether it's right or wrong for the CJ to attend the book launch, it is that much as we accord the Chief Justice and other justices and judges the high honor and respect we do, they must also reciprocate by way of providing leadership and jurisprudential decision making deserving of the honor and respect and certainly they must do so without blemish or criticism other than that which is jurisprudential in nature because the latter is and must be a part of a healthy governance system where the rule of law is paramount. The Daily Nation news report follows on Dr. Mutunga's decision. By NATION REPORTER Posted Monday, July 2 2012 at 21:23 Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has declined to be the chief guest at the launch of a controversial book about Miguna Miguna’s time in the coalition government. Dr Mutunga said Mr Miguna announced that he would be the chief guest before confirmation. The highly anticipated book is expected to give a ringside account of the politics of the coalition and the goings on in the Prime Minister’s office. In a statement from his office, the CJ said he could not officiate at the launch because he had not read the book. Neither seen nor read “The Chief Justice believes that it would not be prudent for him to confirm that he will officiate at the launch of a book he has neither seen nor read. It is in this regard that he has declined Mr Miguna’s invitation,” said the statement. Mr Miguna, the PM’s former adviser on coalition matters, is set to launch “Peeling Back the Mask: A Quest for Justice in Kenya” on July 14 at the Inter-Continental Hotel, Nairobi. Responding to Dr Mutunga’s statement on Monday evening, Mr Miguna said: “He had accepted the invitation. It seems there was too much pressure. I understand and empathise with the CJ. The launch proceeds as planned.’’ The book is published by London-based Gilgamesh Publishing. (READ: US extremist takes up critical book on Raila) “In his explosive new memoirs, Peeling Back the Mask, Miguna Miguna explains why he rejected the Prime Minister’s subsequent offer of reinstatement and exposes Mr Odinga’s lacklustre leadersship,” Gilgamesh Publishing says. On Monday, Dr Mutunga’s office said he had written to Mr Miguna turning down the invitation to attend the launch. “Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has today written to Mr Miguna Miguna to inform him that he is unable to accept the invitation,” said the statement. He explained that when he received the invitation, he asked for an advance copy of the book before he could decide to accept to be chief guest. However, Mr Miguna went ahead to announce the CJ’s acceptance without confirmation from the CJ. Uchambuzi Tanaka, www.omwenga.com

Omwenga: It's not that simple. That this matter has reached this far, with two articles in the nation's leading dailies, should give people pause for thought. Thinking things through, seeking and listening to advice, ... these are always helpful for all.
I'll take Mutunga at his word. In that case, it is high time he made clear to his friends that his role as Chief Justice comes with obligations and responsibilities, although he will never forget fighting with them in the trenches, they remain friends, and so forth. It also casts a rather bad light on Miguna, with his implication that the CJ is lying, which further underscores the preceding point.
On the other hand, if Miguna is right that the CJ had accepted the invitation, then, his change of mind notwithstanding, Mutunga showed a severe lapse of judgment, in what was a fairly clear case of conflict. In that case, we will have to watch him very carefully in the future and sound alarm bells well in advance.
I do agree with you that we all want the CJ to succeed. The country badly needs him to succeed.

Well the CJ has now spoken and he says Miguna announced him as the Chief Guest without confirmation from him. That doesn't sound very good. Let's hope this will not be the beginning of another controversy and accusations on the CJ. The Daily Nation and may be Miguna himself are still selling the whole thing as a book about Raila. We must have a country bigger than Raila and it still baffles me why this book is being sold as a Raila story. We will soon find out, won't we? Here we go: www.nation.co.ke/News/CJ+turns+down+invite+to+launch+Miguna+book/-/1056/1442556/-/a3d42jz/-/index.htmlThe CJ did the right thing. Miguna scored yet another publicity stunt - promoting his book. Ni hayo tu!Yeah Job, MM scored yet another NEGATIVE publicity stunt. Something like that is NEVER good for promoting/marketing any product anywhere in the whole world. Believe you me!! But may be MM is just another Corsi and has an audience in Kenya similar to that of Corsi in the US of A! If that is the case, then his book will still sell depending on how big this audience in Kenya is!

omwenga
kudos for the spirited fight
in closing i wonder ....
we are lucky courtesy to miguna's "big mouth" or should i say big pen (anyway he does play by the open book rules), we came to learn that the CJ would launch his book.
what if this information was no revealed in advance? would the CJ still have acted as he has done, or would he have gone ahead to officiate the launch? is the CJ's move to decline the invite on account of the public outcry as miguna wants us to believe or is driven by ideals or ethics?
miguna is certainly not doing him a favor when he suggests that mutunga wanted to attend but public pressure has forced him to decline. it implies the CJ is reckless. i think miguna should be mindful of what he says about people he associates with, but anyway who am i kidding.
i look forward to reading (at least some excerpts) this book and hopefully it is well worth to have in personal collection. if however its not worth the hype that would be a shame
regardless i of now believe that with this book, miguna will find it increasingly difficult to make political partnerships, because politicians will not trust him
incidentally, isn't there some kind of secrecy act/clause (official secrets) on civil servants which prohibits them from publishing some aspects of day to day operations. so if this book is not doing whistle blowing on specific criminal acts (which is of course encouraged) but instead only exposes the inner working and management style of government, it doesn't matter whether he likes the style/staff or not, i bet litigation will follow on behalf of the state.
on another note, since miguna provided a long list of dignitaries invited (kibaki, raila, kalonzo, ruto, etc etc,) perhaps any one of them can take the place of mutunga.
kalonzo? ruto? anybody out there? maybe jukwaa should send mwalimumkuu
July 14 here we come ....

So you succeeded at intimidating the studs man hu? Whereas good for Mutunga as it guarantees him anither chance to run his affairs free of makele, the whole thing offers yet another opportunity to interrogate the kind of leadership that you guys are trying to create.
You got to feel for the man. So the man cannot even go out and enjoy some busaa unless Raila and ODM say so?

One little detail:
The Chief Justice had accepted the invitation IN WRITING.
He changed his mind.
But that is OK.
And the book did roll off the press on the 30th of June. I am sure if he wanted to peruse the book in advance, there was still ample town. It is almost two weeks to the 14th of July 2012.

Had he proceeded with the book launch it may have cost him his cushy post even before he has settled into it. I admire your steadfast support of MM, but it does one no good to crash & burn along with a friend who has chosen a self-destructive course.

What I have a problem with is that he had accepted the invitation in writing and in declining the invitation later, the excuse (rather than the reason) of not having read the book would not have arisen. Prior to acccepting in writing he should have placed this condition on Miguna as a pre-requisite for his attendance tomorrow! He should have been man enough to say that on reflection he did not think it was suitable for him to attend the function and after this he can proceed with whatever suitable lie he could muster if public pressure was not one of them!

If this be the case, then Willy Mutunga is a dishonest man! As usual, you're jumping into the wrong conclusion. ACCEPTING an invitation and CONFIRMING attendance are two different things. One can in fact accept an invitation then decline to confirm attendance based on substantive reasons that have nothing to do with dishonesty. Start by being honest yourself!

Considering his position, Miguna should have allowed him to do that, rather than contradicting him in public. That's what I would do for a friend. What we now have are great minds that have fought oppression and mulled things over failing to think things through. Had Miguna thought things through, he would not have invited the CJ. Had the CJ thought things through, he would not have accepted (that is, if indeed he did). And had both together thought things through, they would have agreed on what they would tell the media. A very untidy and unnecessary business.

According to the statement, the CJ had requested to see a copy of the book before deciding whether or not he would accept to officiate as chief guest at the launch event. Mutunga agreed to receive a copy on July 6, and according to his email to Miguna yesterday 'before I could reply, you publicly announced that I [would] launch your book.'
“Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has today written to Mr Miguna Miguna to inform him that he is unable to accept the invitation,” said the statement.
Job,
Not to beat a dead horse but I think you are trying very hard to split hairs. The statements from the CJ office clearly state he did NOT ACCEPT the invitation. Not quite sure where the whole confirmation business is coming from.
Either Mutunga or Miguna is a blatant liar.
