I returned home from a working trip in SA yesterday and stopped over at my favorite local in Nairobi West where they were showing the Gor Mahia game live on Satellite TV. I arrived there just after the pitch invasion by Gor fans who were at the time trailing Rangers 3-0. As you would expect, stones and missiles were being thrown and tear gas was the response from the police and the rest of Africa was reminded of the behaviour of some Kenyans.
If the intention was to stem the anticipated embarrassment of more goals, it fell flat. The yobs wearing the white and green team shirts embarrased Kenyan football and hopefully KPL and FKL/KFF will come down hard on the club for the behaviour of their supporters for in this day an age Kenyan football should not be like those days when Gor fans beat up everyone when they lost to Benham FC of Clement Gachanja.
I hope Gor fans in Jukwaa are as embarrassed as are thousands of Kenyans whose reputation on the continent has been tarnished by this stonethrowing culture found amongst Gor supporters! What does not even help is the comments that were being made at the local about "hawa wajaluo na mawe" which is the reason why Gor must work hard to drop the tag associating it with the Luo.

...That is the unfortunate spice of having a team with fanatical support...the team has to pay a hefty fine as per the rules and regulations of KPL, and they will lose the three points as per regulation. How about some crowd control mechanism in Kenya football?...How about getting enough security personnel when teams with fanatical following play?
As for Kamale tying everything that went wrong at this particular match to the entire Luo tribe, this is rather unfortunate, you would think he knows better (be grown-up)...Take a look at the team roster, take a look at the club website, look at the club FB page, if you were at the stands during the last season you would have realized that the club draws support from all over the country...
Kamale you are right about one thing, there was crowd trouble at yesterday's match...but you are wrong for introducing a tribal slur in your solution to the problem we witnessed yesterday at the stadium...and what may I ask you Kamale, is wrong with associating with the Luo anyway...?

Dont forget that for a long time, one of the favorite mafiya propaganda tools against the Rt Hon Prime Minister was to constantly point out, that he and his supporters were violent. I recall during the mafiya botched stolen election of 2007, a friend told me that his mum in law was in town and was anti ODM. Reason? Get ready for this. Thats how deranged and stupid the arguments against the Rt Hon Prime Minister have been. The maifya and Panuarers cant compete on policy issues because the Rt Hon Prime Minister is an expert there. They cant compete on Governance issues either. Just look at the disastrous last 8 yrs have been. They cant compete on Bill Of Rights Issues either, this is a regime that does not allow ANY semblance of public demonstrations or assemblies. Reading the comments on this thread, one can clearly separate Jukwaa wheat from the Jukwaa chaff. The biggest tribalists are those that see tribalism in everything some members post. Its not suprising that names of politicians they fanatically support are carefully inserted to make their points 'authentic', and of course the icing is the usual old, tried and tested mafiya this and that.

There is nothing wrong with Luos supporting Gor and this holds true for AFC Leopards whose support is primarily Luhyia. There is nothing tribal pointing out this unless you want to be in denial! I made reference to a comment made about the incident as it was shown on tv that said "hawa wajaluo na mawe" and if anyone continued reading after the word wajaluo they would have noted that I was actually asking Gor to work towards getting the club untagged from being a tribe based club as that is what would stop people making the comment that was made in the pub. So it might be helpful for those who cannot shed their tribal knickers to learn to read! |

l really miss the eighties when Afc and Gor were at their best. The joke was that even if AFC hammered Gor or not they (the fans) would still beaten and stoned on their way home.
On a serious note even in europe you find that all major clubs have die hard fans that are always ready to make trouble. So this not a Gor, AFC or Mwenge thing

The reason why I said " a mere soccer game" is because it was, well...a mere soccer game! Nothing close to a world cup final or English Premier quality or African Cup of Nations or KPL final or with any soccer star an ordinary Kenyan like me can point on the street. Yet this caused riots, traffic jams, injuries from stone throwing, cancelled matches, robbed motorists, smashed windscreens, terrified women robbed of their groceries and other valuables. I think Nyayo stadium should be shut- yet again- until proper fencing is erected to avoid pitch invasion by uncivilised Kenyans before we have more unnecessary deaths! In my view these hooligans like to create chaos (mass action?) as a cover to rob innocent- unsuspecting- motorists! (Probably why we need the easing of gun licensing in Kenya but that's a topic for another day!)

Have you ever been on the stands as Gor Mahia fans from all corners of the country sing the K'Ogalo Anthem among other songs in praise of the team, yes Kamale, all in Dholuo...be a proud African and sing in Sizulu the next time you are in SA and happen to watch Amazulu play... I do not understand why you suggest that the club should stop associating with the Luo just because some football hooligans stopped the match... or because you heard someone in a pub saying "hawa Wajaluo na mawe"... Gor has players from all over the country, check the team roster... Be real my friend, be a good Kenyan and call for the hooligans to be identified and even banned from the stadia; suggest that the club forfeit the three points for letting its fans disrupt the game, suggest that the club be fined as per regulations...I say yes, yes, and yes...! |

I am appaled at your lack of coherence in this topic. Bar Nereah, your names suspiciously sound like they are of 'stone throwing oringins', whereby the negative mention of Gor has torpedod your abilities to distinguish between the the thrust of the argument, and what you conseder to be an eternal and pervasive anti-luo bias on the part of the originator, Kamalet.
Hooliganism in sport is a scourge that needs no tolerance; and violence in stadiums means they become unsafe and one can never go there with their young kids or cousins. I do not see the need to deride Kamale.

Embarassed yes I am as a Kogalo fan, and condemn it I do. But I think Gor need not drop the tag associating her with us Jokanyam. Her very name is of Luo legend. Though depending on how the commercial and sportive future and sucess of the club is envisioned, Gor can re-brand to widen her appeal, to invite more investment cash-flow. That will be needed to beat say Inter Milan for the world club champs.

Even Manchester United has fans in Kenya without it being robbed of its Mancunian heritage. Gor Mahia certainly has its origin from the Luo but if you recall well enough, the true Luo club used to be called Luo Union later renamed Reunion (now defunct)as was Abaluhya FC (now AFC Leopards) which was predominantly a luhyia based club. Gor Mahia survived the cull of tribal based clubs because it had a more cosmopolitan membership.
So yes sing your luo anthems as these identify with the legacy of the clubs, but please shed the tag of a tribal club which is what led to the comment that has people pissed off here. How else do you assuage the anger of Destiny and many others embarrassed by the supporters of the club, who now get sadly identified as Luo hooligans!
Let the club get more cosmopolitan and drop the tribal tag and it will even perhaps get a lot more support from Kenyans that long admired Gor like myself in the 80's when I rarely missed any match they played in Nairobi.

If you attended matches in the 1980's then I suggest you attend now and you will realize that Gor Mahia has drawn support from all corners of the country like never before; this has been featured several times in many Kenyan TV programs and newspapers; all you will see is people from all corners of the country loving the team called Gor Mahia. I dare you to attend one home game and you will realize that the Gor Mahia fan base is wider and more cosmopolitan than during the 1980's...
I understand that you were disgusted by stone throwing hooligans, I too am disgusted, what if a rock landed on my face? What about the three points that the club will forfeit? What about the fine that KPL will impose? What about scaring away more fans? What about the next match being disrupted by the same goons?
I think we can seek a way forward to the problem of hooliganism within the Gor Mahia fan base without condemning an entire community and calling for the club to "stop associating with the Luo"... which in my opinion is a tribal slur intended to stir emotions... What is wrong with associating with the Luo anyway?

my origins should be the least of your worries so don't even go there. Perhaps what you need to tell kamale is that hooliganism is what is killing kenyan football and not luos like his drinking buddies seem to think. The assumption that a stone-thrower must be a luo is just as sickening as assuming that all bank robbers are kikuyus.
Kamale is well aware that the club has a wide fan base and not just luos so how exactly is the club supposed to drop the so called tribal tag? check id cards and deny luos entry to the games? or ask the fans to stop singing the 'anthem' in luo? that is how crazy this idea of dropping the tribal tag sounds to me.

I think you were right. This week, Gor supporters were on the rampage again destroying private property and vandalizing stadium facilities because they do not agree with referee's decision. I watched the match and it is true the ref made two highly suspect decisions, one was disallowing an obvious Gor goal and further denying Gor an obvious penalty when an Ulinzi player handled in the box. Ulinzi went on to win 1 nil I think before the match was abandoned. Gor players would have none of it and threatened to attack match officials while throwing missiles on to the pitch thus causing premature abandonment of the match. Gor supporters went on destroy an ambulance which is where their own Chairman Ambrose Rachier had taken cover when missiles were flying everywhere. Happy that the prime minister is amongst the first to condemn this barbaric behavior from K'Ogallo supporters fans. A wrong decision by the referee does not justify vandalising the stadium or creating disturbance stoning private cars around the Nairobi West area. Perhaps success is getting into the heads of some of these uncouth fans. Tuzo sponsorship, reportedly the richest in the region for any soccer team, may as well be cancelled. It is not helping uplift the game if Gor fans will continue to spot unsporting like behaviour. Hawa masapota wa Gor ovyo sana. Bure kabisa! And their club are currently placed at mid-table ranking, down from runners-up last season, just goes to show they will have to school their supporters if they expect to win this league.

At the same time that the AFC Leopards name was coined Moi tried to rename Gor Mahia "Nyayo First 11" but was stood down by Gor officials and fans. The government however still managed to gradually kill Gor and AFC through parastatals like Posta which were the major employers for the players. Players like Sammy Onyango "Jogoo" who was forced to quit Gor and play for Kisumu Posta. |

I agree. The bodies that manage football matches are also culpable for failing to provide adequate security. I attended a Gor game in Kisumu in December where I only spotted about 3 or 4 uniformed police at the stadium. The pitch was not fenced and hundreds of fans would run in whenever Gor scored a goal. That was unbelievable. I have a video shot of that that I plan to post here later. |

You've not lost even a single word on what should be done about wrong referee decisions and the potential consequences such decisions might have vis-a-vis soccer hooliganism. Were those two obviously wrong decisions by the refs, as you seem to admit, intentional or not? Was the ref simply inept or not? Are there credible dispute resolution mechanisms in place to resolve such disputed cases after a mismanaged soccer match? If the answers are yes, yes, no, then you guys will have to live with stone-slinging soccer fans till all soccer institutions prove their credibility! Think also about how much a soccer fan invests in attending an entertaining and well officiated match? Who wants to invest in a farce, you perhaps?? Those were two blunders too many on the part of the refs! This case is not any different from our disputed national elections in 2007! You know how the saga ended due to lack of credible institutions to handle such cases, don't you? The buzz-word in town since 2007 is called IMPUNITY, just in case you've not heard of it! Please reform the damn soccer administration in Kenya first and thereafter you will see less missiles whizzing past your head! And please stop quoting Kamale. Kamale has never gotten even the simplest of issues right since I joined this board!! His faux-pas are well documented not only here on Jukwaa, but in Mashada too! Yes, soccer hooliganism must stop.
