The world is always difficult to make sense of. But once in a while something happens that makes it too difficult to express the difficulty of making sense of something worldly.
I disagree with those who keep singing the song of choice, we can't let the terrorists win. How could we not ... when their success or failure is in their hands only, as we are really not in the war they fight us?
In my view the war is only theirs, and we are collateral. They win it every day they set out! I feel subdued enough to admit. I just don't know a way of surrender that would let them take their "victory" and leave me alone.

President Uhuru Kenyatta adressed the nation on Saturday night about the Westgate Mall attack that left 39 people dead, and said measures were in place to punish the culprits. In his statement the president said that his govenment will provide neccessary help to support the affected families to help them get back to their normal life. Uhuru also added that he has also lost close members of his family and joined Kenyans in extending his deepest condolence to the victims' families. He also wished the injured quick recovery. Uhuru said that his government is ready to defend the nation and is determined to hunt down the perpetrators. He however called upon Kenyans to remain calm and vigilant, adding that the public should volunteer to donate blood and provide information that will help track the attackers. www.standardmedia.co.ke/?articleID=2000094019&story_title=i-have-lost-close-members-of-my-family-in-westgate-says-uhuru

Intelligent guess: Al-Shabab joint operation with Al Hijra. ---Al Who? Security analysts have expected a spectacular operation in Kenya, ever since her military crossed the border in operation nyundo [linda nchi]. Al-Shabab says KDF bombed refugee camps around Kismayo, and this is Hammurabi's law in practice. [Shoot to kill on sight, like those latest orders of IG KImaiyo to his police force!] The Kenyan media seemed to rely only on Kenyan official sources to reveal the news on what is happening. Amazing how they refused to do their own thinking. This has changed the dynamic of the reporting ---for instance, while many inside the mall had modern devices which can communicate in various ways, the Kenyan media obeyed the order for information stop, meaning lt was to foreign media one could tune for live coverage even from the inside of the mall! Meanwhile Nairobi police said it was a suspected robbery! while radio stations outside the continent were already reporting a hostage situation and a killing spree, targetting non Muslims! ---Live feed from inside the mall! It was also the foreign media that came up with the first dramatic photos from inside the mall ---I attributed this to the number of expatriates inside whose first instincts were to contact their 'home' media, and not our local houses. But then I thought, how about the rich Kenyans inside with their apps? they surely must be feeding the Kenyan newspapers who then must be censoring, unlike foreign media, making a killing on adverts as hits on their web pages shot the sky! ---a popular story is just business when you are not emotionally involved. Then the shock came to me when a Kenyan media house quoted the BBC in London. The BBC was quoting a Nairobi red cross official, visible on a live-feed on Kenyan TV! I couldn't suppress the self-question, if the Beeb was paying better and so had the first take! WHO ARE THE AL-HIJRA?The Al-Hijra are a Kenyan group, allied to Al-Shabab. Their nucleus was formed by defectors from the little reported group of Kenyan Somalis who were recruited and trained by the Kenyan army for operations in Somali. Loaned to a friendly militia. Once in Somali, some were 'turned' or saw the real light of enhanced piety, and decided home in Kenya was where the real enemy lay, that the KDF was cynically using them in Somali against their brothers. Al Hijra is a 'blowback'. [Nothing new there. Wars without blowbacks do not exist in human history] But security Analysts disagree on their sophistication. (And Gichangi and his NISS boys are tight-lipped. Trapped too busy chasing ICC witnesses I suppose.) 1. Primitive and low-tech, the Al Hijra have been the grenade tossers in Nairobi, and a sophisticated attack like the Westgate Mall is out of their range. Or 2. Humans learn, and under coaching from consultants from across, Al-Hijra are crawling up, cased the target and organised the local logistics. 3. The Choice of target is significant and betrays a considered opinion: Upmarket, cosmopolitan, alienated rich and opulent, an expatriate cultural center and picnic ground: it was a guaranteed, saturated international media coverage event, a spectacular propaganda feed and spreader of the fame of the militant masterminds. ----In a tweet, a militant quipped they targeted a venue where a segment that looks down upon downtrodden Muslims feasts! That is an ['interpellation'] attempt to create a wedge between rich and poor Kenyans [or, if one thinks the wedge already exists, an attempt at deepening of it] and so the State House was quick to assert: this cowardly attack will not divide us as a nation. Mesays, This attack gives us an opportunity to put up appearances as a United Nation. The tyranny of numbers victory and the ICC dictates of late, have not exactly been binding us in a 'till death do us part' communion. This terrorist attack is therefore an opportunity to put up a united front, fall behind the commander in grief, and do our best to hold poker faces, pretending no irreconcilable differences exist in the body politic of the nation. I will be the first hypocrite. Because Uhuru Kenyatta has lost family members and close friends --that is what he said, I will stay my executive pen in its sheath, and not put the head of state to ruthless criticism nor harsh wit in the next week. I declare a period of mourning is a ceasefire. An Igbo EKE or week of peace. I know only two days ago the president talked tough and was on the warpath against the opposition ---promising us hell on earth! but as we say in Kenya, the situation has changed, and a week is a long time in politics! Ceasefire week! If the other side make it hold.

Questions for later: As of now, Israeli media offically report Israeli Commandos have taken charge of the situation in Nairobi. It is end game time. PS: 2 Canadian and a french diplomat are reportedly among the dead, also the wife of an american diplomat.

The first editions of this story actually seemed to suggest that Israel could have been the target of the terror, although it seemed a far fetched idea.

Let us stand united?
This is outrageous! A colossal failure of intelligence and disastrous first response. This is the direct result of NSIS running around doing the ICC dirty work instead of protecting Kenyans. NSIS is busy buying MPS tickets to accompany Ruto to the Hague. It is obvious that the government is totally distracted by the ICC matter and there is an obvious vacuum that needs to be addressed. True- choices have a consequence and unfortunately it has led to death of innocent civilians.
It is obvious that NSIS meager resources are being diverted to stupid activities like - who has VIP lounge access, giving Ruto moral support at the ICC- etc instead of paying for intelligence gathering. I would like to see heads rolling starting with Lenku, CID, Police and the NSIS director before anyone asks me to stand together. After the Airport fire, one would think that there should be in place some structured response to tragedies like this. With the hodge podge patch work of plain clothes police running helter skelter responding to a "robbery" it will be interesting to know how many of the deaths were from "friendly" fire-we may never know. Is it possible the killers could have been "rescued" and let go after causing all the mayhem??
The criminal president is too busy strategizing for his up-coming ICC case to take security briefs and ask the tough questions. Please don't ask me to stand united.
RIP my friend

Misplaced priorities is what ails kenya and our leaders. Unfortunately when such tragedies strike it is the common man who suffers while the "thugs" are well tucked in their beds. What was the NSIS doing while these foreigners invaded our country. Now westgate is on fire and yet they were claiming some few hours ago how the building has been secured and the terrorists isolated. Please NSIS you should just go home we get an independent intelligence not one bent on tracking ICC witnesses. The security of the common man is more important than what you are wasting our money on. Remember he who protects a criminal is guilty of the crime itself.

Really listening to the interieur ministers briefing one can understand why the westgate was attacked. The man is least sure of his duty and does not have any idea of how many casualties are currently in hospital. Ask him any question and he asks the men next to him for answers. Asking kenyans to be calm is good but when the minister does not look to be in control of the situation/information it only confirms we are far off from the tunnel end.

WITNESS CLAIMS TERRORIST DISGUISED AS A VICTIM FLED Last updated on 23 Sep 2013 00:00 By Kurian Musa and Wilfred Ayaga NAIROBI; KENYA: A witness claimed one of the terrorists escaped from the scene by joining victims who were being rescued by security forces out of the Westgate Mall. Abdul Ratiff claimed one of the gunmen managed to walk out with them after he changed his clothes on the second floor after hurling grenades at people. He claimed he tried to alert the police that one of the gunmen was in the group but they never paid attention. “I saw him as he changed his clothes and he later walked out with us as police arrived. I tried to tell police he was one of the attackers but I was pushed away,” said the witness. The witness said he had hidden in a Bata Shop inside the mall from where he saw the gunman change clothes. “I saw him, a strong-built man. He was not a Somali. He was an Arab. I hid and I could see him change clothes. He wore a maroon, long sleeved shirt and jeans,” he said. “At 4pm (Saturday) as we filed out, I saw the man. He followed us raising his hands up as though he is one of us,” the witness said. “I shouted to the police that this is the man. But the police shouted back: get out,” he said. “I had gone to buy a soda. I heard bullets, people running away. I went to first floor, then to the second floor but saw people rushing down. “ “I was at the first floor when I had the first gunshot and as I turned, I saw staff at Art Café being shot. It is then I escaped through the fire exit,” a guard who refused to be identified said. “I saw three people dressed in black and with covered faces and they were carrying heavy rifles. They were shooting at us,” another witness said. The rescued persons were ordered to march from the Westgate Mall to the nearby UKay Centre where they were asked to identify themselves. Inside the UKay Centre, police were stationed to question and screen them for more information. In the confusion, there were some who managed to walk away without being questioned. All the survivors were ordered to leave while raising their hands. This proved to be difficult as some of them were in shock and couldn’t do so. Tens of ambulances were on standby to carry the injured to hospital. Some of the victims were shot while inside their vehicles, in shops within the mall, the parking yard and on the staircases. Among the dead was a mother and her daughter who were seated in their car in a traffic jam outside the mall. Their bodies were removed from the car by Kenya Red Cross boss Abbass Gullet himself. Witnesses said they saw at least 10 attackers but the exact number could not be established. The siege continued all through the night and police said the gunmen were holed up inside the supermarket on the first floor. They were hiding in a corner that sells mattresses where they would shoot at them and hide. Meanwhile, Kenya Red Cross personnel led by their boss Abbass Gullet were in the forefront rescuing the injured. And medics at hospitals around Westlands area had a difficult time attending to casualties that were being rushed in by the minute. Ambulances from Kenya Red Cross and those belonging to various hospitals within Nairobi worked overtime rushing the injured to the hospital. Most of the patients were rushed to Aga Khan and MP Shah hospitals where doctors, nurses and other medical personnel were coordinating efforts to receive them. There were chaotic scenes as nurses and other medical personnel struggled to get their act together. Even casual staff had been deployed to help in receiving the patients and transporting them to the emergency wards. At the MP Shah Hospital, one of the medical personnel stood at the gate shouting for people to come in and donate blood. And they responded in their hundreds. At the Aga Khan Hospital, a large area behind the casualty wards had been set aside for donating blood. Some of the casualties were taxi drivers who park outside the Westgate Mall. Relatives had a difficult time tracing their loved ones, some of who were either workers at the mall or those they suspected to have been in the vicinity. At the Aga Khan hospital, an information desk was set up to help those seeking information on victims. www.standardmedia.co.ke/m/?articleID=2000094090&story_title=Witness-claims-terrorist-disguised-as-a-victim-fled

Al-Shabab commander speaks to Al Jazeera Commander says Somali-based group is taking orders from al-Qaeda in "conflict against international Christian crusade". A military commander of al-Shabab, giving his name as Abu Omar, has told Al Jazeera from Somalia that the group does not want any negotiations with the Kenyan government over the siege of a mall in Nairobi. "What the Kenyan government needs to understand, first of all … al-Shabab forces did not mobilise forces against the Kenyan government. We did not invade their territory," he said. "In fact Kenyans were living quite safely until they invaded our country." Al-Shabab is demanding that Kenya withdraw troops from Somalia, where the group is fighting against the government. "What is even more startling is that the so-called international community - the UN, and all these proxy states in the region - they are all in full support of the actions of the Kenyan government when they invaded Somalia." Al-Shabab and al-Qaeda announced their alliance in in February 2012, and Abu Omar confirmed that his group is taking orders from al-Qaeda. "Al-Qaeda are our leaders, they are our mentors, they are our leaders …and we are all engaged in a single conflict against an international Christian crusade and so we are partners in this," he said. with audio here: www.aljazeera.com/video/africa/2013/09/2013923195940866566.html

The bigger question for me is where is lady Omamo in all this? Does someone have to spell out to her role? How can Kenyans remain calm when the defense Secretary is all mum? Has there been a coup in that Ministry? This is just ridiculous. Was her role just to rub salt into the Odinga's wound? A criminal president gambling the security of a nation just to settle personal scores= disaster. Senti 5

In days gone by if anyone said "Raila", the retort would be "Raila this, Raila that". Now when Raila features nowhere, the Omamo nod is alleged to have been given simply "to rub salt into the Odinga's wound"! The Uhuruto admin can't win for losing. They're damned if they do & damned if they don't. They should just borrow a leaf from the Dubyah regime & do as they wish & let the peanut gallery gaggle on. I don't see how Odinga even comes into this thread...

The truth of the matter is that we have government secretaries who are more than incompetent and look like mere stooges. One wonders why they are earning our money in the first place. The KDF is involved in the westgate operation but the defence secretary is missing in action. The interieur secretary appears on national tv but looks like a G4S officer giving an account of a shop robbery. Kenyans will very soon come to their own conclusions more so coming closely after the JKIA inferno. What kind of government do we have in place. Did this "leadership" really know what it means to lead a nation or was is just. for some obvious personal challenges and reasons. In 2002, 70% of kenyans sung "yote yawezekana bila moi" but three years later they wished moi was still around and in charge. The majority might not always have it right all the time!

The Method that KDF used to bring the siege at west-gate mall in Nairobi to an end was a masterpiece in strategic warfare. It was slow, calculated, strangling, inch by inch, bone by bone, floor by floor, "sanitising" they called it... The terrorists knew death was the end result, but the Kenyan forces made them wait for it, gave them time to think about it, they pushed the young terrorists into a corner to expect and wait for what they asked for, In the end it was not going to be a quick death... Think of Lions feeding on a buffalo while the poor animal is watching, it's still alive, something to think about. That's the description of agony. The next time you plan on attacking Kenya think twice, they will not eat you in a hurry. God bless Kenya.
