A Digital Essay by Onyango Oloo in Kwa Zulu Natal
I am writing the day after the event.
Last night I was busy drinking in the various reactions of Kenyans-mostly on Facebook and to a lesser extent on Twitter and other social media platforms.
Mostly, the core supporters of Raila Odinga were reeling with shock at what they considered "betrayal" by NASA's flag bearer. My good friend Miguna Miguna who has been active in NRM campaigns, issued a statement from Canada flatly rejecting Raila Odinga's overture arguing that in the face of the brutal state engineered killings, violence and general electoral misdeeds, meeting President Uhuru Kenyatta did not sit well with him. His sentiments were largely echoed by posters on Facebook. A few cynical people now wondered in the preceding condemnation of Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi and Wetangula was in hindsight warranted. Some of them went further and said Agwambo was the real Jubilee mole in NASA. Another contingent, using realpolitik justifications, supported the early Friday meeting arguing that given the tension prevailing in the country a negotiated settlement between the "Two Presidents" was necessary in order to move Kenya forward. Other analysts took a historical- political view of the ODM leader dating back to his 1999-2000 rapprochement which brought the party he then headed NDP into a pact with Moi's ruling KANU; Raila being actually propelled to Secretary General of KANU in 2001 and later the historic handshake with Mwai Kibaki in February 2008 to conclude the Post Election carnage in with the introduction of Grand Coalition government where Raila Odinga was appointed by President Kibaki as Prime Minister.
A few hours ago, I had a telephone conversation with , a very good friend of mine who has been included as a member of ODM's five member team to review the party in terms of its activities, strategies and plans. He has a vert progressive mind and he revealed to me several things. One, long before Rex Tillerson got on a plane to come to Nairobi there had been days of close meetings between Gikuyu and Luo elders. Secondly, nobody wants William Ruto-not the Gikuyus, not the Luos and not the Americans. The Deputy President is a man on his way out. Secondly, Uhuru's people have now been confronted by the major economic, political and existential crisis that Jubilee is now in.Thirdly, the USA and her imperialist allies are worried sick about geo-political stability in Kenya. Fourthly, it turns out that the Three Musketeers-Kalonzo, Mudavadi and Wetangula have been busy negotiating secretly with the government and Raila's move was a deft move to undercut these opportunistic shenagigans for a secret pact.
Because we agree on a lot of things ideologically, we concur that Raila Odinga is NOT the Joshua who will usher in a Kenyan National Democratic Revolution. But he is by far the most progressive mainstream politician in the country with definite social democratic tendencies, a revolutionary nationalist who is NOT a Communist.
But in the quest towards the NDR, Raila will go a long way towards leading us there.
In the current negotiations with Uhuru, a Secretariat has been cobbled together which will go beyond identifying eating positions to working out avenues for the country's bourgeoisie, petit bourgeoisie and to a certain extent the working class.
We both agree that we should transcend Miguna's total rejectionist stand and see what kind of concessions democratic forces can wrest from Uhuru's people who are out and out comṛador elements wedded to the neo-colonial monopoly capitalist agenda.
In a nitshell, I agree with my mentor Prof. Larry Gumbe that yesterday was after all bot a complete wash out.
And with that I conclude this online intervention.
