And of course the Kenyan born Chris Froome won a stage in the prestigious Tour de France. He was riding for Kenya as late as 2 years ago, but after being frustrated by the Kenya Cycling Federation, he started riding for Britain. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cycling/18755896

For some reason, parts of my "quotation" of the series of photographs and accompanying text, as well as my comments, did not appear above. I can't recall the latter, but I can say this:
Without a doubt, a hugely talented lady. And this is not the sort of narrowly focused, one-dimensional talent that one finds in many of today's sportsmen and sportswomen. This is solid, well-rounded talent, developed through many years of hard work. A true credit to the sport of tennis.

The athletes taking part in the Games - led, as tradition dictates, by the Olympics' spiritual home Greece - made laps of the stadium bearing their nations' flags. There were huge cheers for Usain Bolt, who carried the flag for Jamaica David Beckham took to the Thames with the Olympic Torch powerboating his way to the stadium. A video of James Bond - actor Daniel Craig - meeting the Queen at Buckingham Palace was broadcast to the audience. A helicopter then flew over the stadium to the sound of the Bond theme tune, as two figures parachuted out of the helicopter, one dressed as the monarch As if by magic, the Queen appeared in the stands at the stadium - part of a crowd of about 80,000 - amid cheers

The artistic director, Danny Boyle, pledged a ceremony with a theme of "this is for everyone The show took the watching world through "great revolutions in British society", from an agricultural setting through to the Industrial Revolution Steelworkers began forging material that transformed into golden Olympic rings, which lifted into the air to be suspended above the performers The Oscar-winning film director added that it contains "a celebration of the creativity, exuberance and, above all, the generosity of the British people". He said there were to be "no spectators - everyone in the stadium will be part of the magic". One sequence - during which author JK Rowling delivered a reading - entitled "Second to the right, and straight on till morning", honoured "two of Britain's greatest achievements: its amazing body of children's literature and the NHS". Spectators lucky enough to get tickets to the £27m Olympic Stadium event braved the rain despite forecasters predicting dry weather ahead of the ceremony

Folks You will notice from the images below that the Kenyan olympic contigent comprises of less than 20 indiduals. Majority of team members remained in Kenya having postponed their arrival to London for the Olympic Games so that the athletes can continue training in Nairobi's higher altitude, which helps athletes develop endurance and cope with low oxygen levels. The entire 2012 Kenyan Olympic team is composed of 53 runners, two boxers, two swimmers, one weightlifter and a javelin thrower.
The marathoners, for instance, have delayed their travel date to 7th August. But this is good and I am looking forward to another harvest of olympic medals, this time better than Beijing four years ago. Where the world beaters come from,........ Brother Colm O'Connell poses for a photo at St Patrick's High School, where trees have been planted to honour former pupils who have gone on to become world champions, in Kenya's Iten village June 28, 2012. O'Connell, an Irish missionary who started the first athletics training camp in the Kenyan highlands, never imagined a small village in the Great Rift Valley would become a production line of running talent. I missed the opening ceremony and caught up with the last ten minutes of the event. That is beside the point I want to make.
More than 80% of the Kenyan Olympic team comes from the mighty Rift Valley, yet you hear no complaint from the tribalist chauvinist that browse this forum, Kenyan towns or the good for nothing politicians that toilet mouth in various prayer rallies or funerals. I am yet to hear any calls to Kibunja or read any lists revealing the tribalism and cronyism that is threatening to cripple the team. Neither do you hear any denials or calls for consultations in appointing the team.
So what is the magic in this team that is going to make Kenyans really "jivunie kuwa Mkenya"? What is with this team that has made me read about each athlete, carry a Kenyan flag to my local and talk to my friends and strangers in a manner to suggest that I have a personal relationship with these Kenyan patriots? Fellow Jukwaaist, what is it with this team, which on the surface, represents the biggest cancer we face as a country, tribalism, yet every Kenyan has faith and confidence in what it can achieve? Why can't we as Jukwaaist and as a country replicate what this team is all about, performance, in politics in order to improve the lives of Kenyans? Because I know Kenyans value performance- and that is why I will be watching each Kenyan event.
The lesson from the Kenyan team is simple- Kenyans dont care about the tribe of the president or the civil servants serving them- they care about performance.

I wholeheartedly agree. So many sports out there but the je ne sais quoi attidudes of Kenyas Sports Federations means great talent is unexplored. In the meantime our neighbors are slowly but very surely improving. For starters we have one of the worst football teams in the EAC region. Tanzania's football clubs are so vastly better than ours if the frequent CECAFA early exits are anything to go by.

Hard luck! Kenya's boxer Benson Nganjiru opens the country's Olympic action with a loss to Egypt's Abdelaal Hesham in the flyweight (52kg). Boxer Benson Gicharu drew round 1 and 3, and only lost round 2, so Kenya is on the right track. Whatever they're doing, let them keep doing it with more mojo!!
Good news
100m men freestyle -- His time is under 50 secs. 10 times in the 48 secs, 11 in the 49s -- I think he has the 16th best time (to be confirmed), out of about 50 or so racers. He need to clock 48-something to be anywhere respectable.
**CORRECTION: his time of 49.60 is not good enough for the semis.
**CONFIRMED: the slowest qualifier for the 16 in the semis swam 48.99. David out!!
Next hope for Kenya?
Semis at 9:30 tonite.
