PHubbard #102 - couldn't agree more. There was so much going on last night that Botswana's historic first medal didn't get the shouting about that it deserved - brilliantly done, Nijel Amos!

Good to see others in agreement about the disrespect shown by Phil Jones to the Kenyan National anthem. It should have been a joyous celebration of the only athletics World Record thus far in London 2012. A stupendous athletic achievement. The trackside reporter has put a cloud over the excellent reporting by our past track and field stars. An on screen apology to all is the least to be expected.

An appology should be given to the world!

Taking nothing away from Rudisha's achievement, there's been talk about him being the best 800m runner of all time. When he broke the record 2 years ago it was by 2 hundredths, a week later he took 8 hundredths off it. Last night he took another tenth off.
When Seb Coe broke it in 1979 he took ONE SECOND of the record. 2 years laters another SEVEN TENTHS and set a mark that stood for 16 years.

The 800m tops a list of fantastic races at the London 2012 Olympics. So many great youngsters coming through in this event and should be even more intersting by Rio. Also I would love to see David Rudisha race Usain Bolt in a 400m, think Bolt might just edge it but would be great to see in something like a diamond league.

The big question is how much more can Rudisha take off the World Record could he possibly go below 1.40 it will be difficult but if anybody can he can. Can't give big enough praise to this guy, he is a gent and a genius, utterly brilliant

Totally agree with the comment made by The-matrix. The interuption of the Kenyan national anthem is a disgrace and Phil Jones should have known better. The three Jamaican runners clearly wanted to acknowledge the remarkable achievcement of Rudisha and were prevented from showing their admiration and respect. This made for awkward viewing and I agree that an apology should be made by the BBC.

As a Kenyan, I was disgusted to see BBC reporter (Phil Jones) disrespect my country's national anthem. He owes us (Kenyans) and the rest of the world an apology, unless the BBC management agrees with his behaviour.

You may be right, I was impressed with the 18 year old, with a WJR by some distance!
He is already Rudisha's closest rival at such a young age. 800m is entering an interesting era.

The lad in second was not far behind and is only 18, woudln't surprise me to see him running as fast as Rubisha in a year or two, so that might bring back tactical races sooner that you think!

Andy,
I will rather see the 800m as an optimum blend of speed and endurance. Leave the tactical aspect to longer races.
Besides, with Rudisha around you will have to wait a wee bit longer before you see a tactical 800m at a major event.

great run, great athlete, great world record
hopefully now the grand prix organisers will do away with tedious pacemakers that have near destroyed the grand prixs as spectator events. Don't need them.

The BBC have been disrespectful to ALL medal ceremonies, unless a Team GB competitor has won the gold, not just this one. Michael Johnson looked disgusted when Inverdale et al were talking during a ceremony for an American athlete. Poor show, BBC, very poor show.

1. Saying Osagie would have won the previous 3 Olympics with his time is irrelevant in 800m, where the races are normally tactical, often run slow on the first lap. the BBC are showing a gross lack of understanding of middle distance running by keeping on quoting this stat.
2. You say all 800m should be run like this one, why? The tactical races are just as exciting to watch.

He runs like a pace-setter, leads from the front and then holds it thereby helping other contestants with fast times. This is how the 800m should be run.

I agree with the criticism of Phil Jones insistence (going "hands on" as so often) that Weir pay attention to him rather than to the Kenyan anthem. Jones was not "in a hard place". He had already got all he needed. And was gifted a line such as "These 3 great athletes are pausing to show their respect to a fellow champion. That's the measure of them". The BBC could learn from them.

Is it possible to give all 8 finalists a medal for effort? What a tremendous race! One of the best Olympic races I have seen. Osagie would have won Gold in some previous Olympics with that time and he came 8th!
The best races of this Olympics are the 800m and 100m (all sub 10s apart from injured Asafa), and in that order.

Agree with people's comments regarding Phil Jones's uninspiring questions and lack of respect for the Kenyan National Anthem which the Jamaicans were trying to acknowledge.
The BBC are in desperate need of interviewers with tact, objectiveness and the ability to ask insightful questions

It's the BBC isn't it ? They've made a decision to go decidely down-market and patriotic in their coverage. Some of the Directors need to learn a little about their sports. Eg the Weymouth director missed the crucial moment when The Dutch sailor messed up and Ben Ainslie went to gold position. Key moments are regularly missed in the marathon coverage.

I am pretty tired of all sychphants fawning over Bolt, topped off by Phil Jones and his dreadful, dreadful rudeness. #72 has it absolutely right, it's a real shame that a world record holder that seems to be a genuinely nice chap will be overshadowed by a show pony sprinter who have given himself the "living legend" moniker.

I was there last night and what a run this was. When the clock showed 23.4s at 200m it was clear it was going to be quick and boy oh boy was it. With every athlete getting a PB or National record, it has to be the greatest 800m race of all time.
It's a shame that this one is buried a bit under the weight of Usain fever (which was also an amazing performance).

Brilliant performance, but once again the BBC focus on the celebrity rather the better athletic performance, i.e.Bolt. they have done the same with the best GB track performance, i.e Mo Farah, and gone over the top with Jess Ennis.
Come on BBC stop acting like a tabloid, as for Phil Jones again a disgrace after his earlier interview with Jess Ennis and the other GB hepthalete, who he blanked.

Brilliant from Rudisha, staggering show in probably the most high quality final of the games
As for Phil Jones,I have been saying this for years, what is the point of his job?.
Questions like "How do you feel?","Has it sunk in yet?","Talk us through what went wrong there?", "You've just won the olympics, you must be pleased?",The athletes show amazing restraint by answering his guff questions.

I was there yesterday and I wanted to say that the highlight for me was the 800m race. Rodisha and the other 800m finalists were the stars, dispite the Jamaican 1-2-3. It seemed to me the roar for him when he broke the WR was so much louder than that for Bolt winning the 200m. The whole stadium was on their feet when he broke the record and again when he received his gold medal. A real privilege.

Yes well done to Amos, an amazing feat to become the first from your country to take an Olympic medal. I think that he has the talent to potentially challenge Rudisha. To run under 1 minute 42 at just 17 is nothing short of remarkable.

great performance by Rudisha - if you haven't seen it there is a great film on his coach Man On A Mission clip (AKA "Born To Run - The Secret of Kenyan Athletics") probably on BBC Iplayer or c4/itv player equivalent and this shows where Rudisha has come from and where he still trains. No million pound training centre for these guys - boy are they good.

Phenomenal performance by Rudisha. Agree the BBC miss the irony of talking about how it shouldn't be over-shadowed in the midst of treating it like the preamble to Bolt then dedicating a further chunk to post-200 adulation. Disagree with the Phil Jones criticism, he was caught between a rock and a hard place. Usain and co lap took so long, he either uses his slot in the interview line or loses it.

Bolt & Rudisha fantastic, as the BBC stated two incredible athletes with very different personalities. Why must certain people then groan about Bolt's 'Histrionics' is beyond me. The sullen minority that insist on dampening a colourful evening is so draining. Bolt, Blake & Weir are incredible to watch and an absolute breath of fresh air and only hasten to brighten an already unbelievable Olympics.

Shame on BBC and Phil Jones in particular - complete disrespect to David Rudisha and Kenya as a nation by disrespecting the Kenyan national anthem by forcing Weir into a chat/interviewing during the anthem which even Bolt stood in attention.
Rudisha was the only realistic prospect of breaking a world record in this games but only got 5 min coverage.

Fantastic performance by David Rudisha, and what a gentleman in the true sense of the word. Appalling behaviour by the BBC during the Kenyan National Anthem. The BBC (Inverdale) kept making the point that Rudisha and his performance would never compete with Bolt and his reputation and would never cross over to the wider public. The BBc gave Rudisha's race a 5 minute preview compared to 24 hours worth of promoting and advertising of the 200m race and a 30 minute preview. BBC you need to redress the balance, this was world class athletics at its best
