This tragic story is what IMPUNITY is all about. mta do? That's the sad message here. A young and promising Univerity (post-grad) woman has her life snapped away at the whimsical orders of a drug aristocrat (protected by State/Police) and there's NOTHING you can do about it. KABOGO et al., are well protected, not the ordinaries.
Didn't the same Police, the same Iteere, clear all these deadly fellas from charges of drug dealing? Halafu? In the eyes of the Police (& Iteere), Kabogo, Mwau et al., are all clean and law abiding citizens. Even Sonko.
As far as they're concerned, as detailed in Iteere's carefully pursed press statement (re-victimizing the defenseless/dead victim), Mercy Keino was merely a victim of her own over-drinking (what Iteere insinuates was wine and hot drinks (whiskey))...her own rowdiness (Iteere reports her breaking glasses and being twice evicted from the party)...and her own bad judgement - walking out drunk by the highway to flag down late night motorists. In other words, Iteere is selling a drunken accident theory, totally exculpating/exonerrating the KABOGO-drug-recruitment-gone-bad theory.
I guess something positive comes out of this. Potential young recruits into the drug business should see how easy and vicious it is to dispose them - and the pain it leaves to their families.
It seems to me that there is a collusion between the police, pathologist and drug traffickers to kill this case. From the little I know about forensic science, it should not matter how badly damaged a body is the cause of death can still be established. I have seen cases where a victim was almost burnt to ashes yet cause of death was still found. Why not Mercy´s case? So I think that the pathologist has been bribed to say one or the other thing. You all remember when a government pathologist lied on the cause of death of Dr. Robert Ouko? Does it ring a bell.
The police has made up their minds from day one. To them, it was a hit and ran period. Please don't ask these useless guys to do an investigation. They wont and if they did the results would be useless as usual.
The drug lords are in control and it seems that the country cant do anything. We are at the mercy of Kabogo and Mwau.
And why was the rush to bury the lady? looks really fishy
It looks like Kabogo is off the hook and the case almost closed! Poor girl.
Police reconstruct student’s last moments
The last moments of a university student whose body was found on a busy highway were on Wednesday re-enacted by police boss Mathew Iteere.
Ms Mercy Keino, 25, whose death resulted in Juja MP William Kabogo being questioned by the police, was last seen walking towards the highway alone, Mr Iteere said.
“Well past midnight, Ms Keino decided to leave and efforts by her cousin to stop her failed. She disappeared towards Waiyaki Way alone,” Mr Iteere said.
The police report indicates Ms Keino was drunk on wine and whiskey, which was plentiful at the June 17 party also attended by the MP.
The information is based on witness statements, including that of her cousin, Ms Scolastica Namwai Kamemba.
On a statement by a motorist, Mr Iteere said: “He was driving to Uthiru to drop a friend and spotted a woman on the other side of the road frantically waving down a car. On coming back, he saw a body at almost the same spot where the lady was.”
The party was at Wasini Luxury Homes on Church Road, Westlands, about 100 metres from Waiyaki Way.
Twenty one people were at the party, 12 of them women aged between 20 and 25, according to the police.
“Witnesses at the party said Ms Keino took a lot of wine and whisky, resulting in her shouting at everybody and breaking glasses.
Twice she was thrown out of the venue,” Mr Iteere said. The investigation has so far not established how she died.
“In the meantime, the investigation team has been boosted by two senior prosecutors appointed by the DPP to offer technical and legal advice,” Mr Iteere said.
The investigation established how she happened to be at the party.
Her cousin, Ms Kamemba, called and invited her at 6.30pm. Ms Kamemba had also been invited by a friend identified as Jacky.
The cousins met in Hurlingham, caught a matatu and arrived in Westlands at 7pm.
They were met at a petrol station by Jacky and two men who were strangers to the cousins.
“One of the men took the names of the ladies, saying they would be required to enter,” Mr Iteere said.
Mr Kabogo arrived later in the company of a man identified as Joram, according to the police.
Earlier reports had indicated the body had been tossed out of a vehicle.
Said Mr Iteere: “The vehicle has been traced and the owner says he spotted the body and slowed down to avoid running over it.”
The police said the vehicle was inspected and found to neither have a dent nor repainted.
all we are saying is that we are tired of cops trying to stay alive as drug lords and big time criminals take over our lives and very soon country (see how many have or are lining up to get into politics).
fighting these guys has never been easy and law enforcement officers, unfortunately will lose their lives in the line of duty if we are to get our country back.
Akinyi,
Fighting these guys?
It is not how tired we are though how powerful the drugs cartel is and how high it is infiltrated in our society. When our minister of security – Kenya highest law enforcement officer - has to back track his accusations of identifying representatives of the drugs cartel, then there is nothing any cop, or Iteere can do as they will be restrained by their respectively bosses.
Looking at the police for fighting these guys is not very realistic. Any cop who does not understand this situation walks a lethal path.
It is only at the international level where we can find uncompromised leadership to fight the drugs cartels. Though even at this level not much progress can be expected and there are many voices calling for legalising drugs and its trade as the only way to take it away from the criminal world.
So the only guy who would see a body on the street would be the same guy who had seen a woman waving frantically on cars - How convenient!
Other drivers would just run over the body, and apparently they would not even be so alarmed as to slam on their breaks alerting other drivers behind them. No one who ever ran over a squirrel, or even a small bird, with a car is buying the theory that a body was repeatedly ran over by cars because drivers would not see it in the dark. BS!
I suspect Iteere would argue that those who hit the body would not stop to point at it as they would fear being accused of an accident. However, when you unexpectedly hit something in a car the instinct is to slam on breaks, a move that would alarm drives behind you - even if you drive away you will be have given the driver behind you a signal that their is something to watch out for. The sound of a body being hit by a car is also quite distinct - the description of hit injuries on the woman don't sound like something that would have gone without being noticed by on-coming drivers and pedestrians. Even if it was a bird on the street drivers would quickly notice it.
Has the car that allegedly swerved to avoid the body been checked for the possibility that it had at some point carried a body or an injured person? Most likely not - I am sure the police are not eager to corroborate Iteere's theoretical forensics with any facts on the scene.
Prediction is very difficult, especially about the future.
I'm just wondering why Kabogo took it upon himself to play such a prominent role at the party, yet he was just a guest and actually invited by an 'unknown' fellow he couldn't even identify?
Where was the host, Mr Shah, in all this? I thought it should have been the responsibility of the host to ensure order during the party?
To me, Kabogo was the host and hence the person in charge. This explains his very conspicuous role that night.
I saw this coming. There have been numerous investigations into Kabogo's dealings and none have ever been successful. This is one prominent case and it has been bungled right before our eyes. We've had 3 suspicious deaths over the past few weeks; Samuel Wanjiru, the cop investigating the stage managed shooting and now Mercy! None have been solved and none will.
Where are the noise making kalenjin MPs when you need them. The lady is from Belgut (I think) and her MP is the noisy Keter. Why cant he call those many press conferences he often calls to defend WSR? Is this not the time to demand through investigation?
Ama its the fear of the "exterminator" Mr. Kabogo?
Kabogo has put fear into everybody's heart. What a shame

good point einstein
note also that keino and cousin arrived at this party / business at 7pm and evidently others were there early too.
kabogo arrives at the party a little after midnight I.e 6 hours later and within minutes takes over the running of the whole show. the kind of guy you dont want to invite to your party i guess.

I was also wondering the same, at first the police ruled out accident because there was no blood to prove the accident theory, now the police are selling that accident crap with Mercy being drunk and unruly, and yet we have also heard from witnesses that she objected on alcohol being served, so who is telling the truth, the police? Why did the man who came to meet them before the so called party took their names? and what was the party all about? was Mercy being set up by the cousin and friend into the world of crime? Even Iteere is asking himself the same question and yet he has all the power to know what the party was all about, police commissioner, you want to tell us you don't know what the party was all about?, all your witnesses have not said what they went to do at that house? sell it to the birds and children.
Mank, your observations in this matter have been quite incisive. Please apply to other national issues. Keep it up. Otherwise on the matter of the car, there are only three plausible options: either it was repainted, had its plates switched or its a totally different car. Begs the question why the police latch onto the most gullible line of thinking when a detective is supposed to push the envelope. On the second statement he made about Mwau's alleged shooting, he totally skirted the issue of who owned the gun and whether there was any ballistics investigation. Very clearly a cover up as Job has spelt it. Iteere must go.
P/S. One thing though, pathologist says she was highly intoxicated. I cant vouch for anyone involved in this saga but if there is any iota of truth in that, witnesses whether character or otherwise should tell the truth in such circumstances. It helps to reconstruct a situation and establish any patterns that may have been skirted by the radar.

One of the difficulties the police will face - especially with the hurried burial of Mercy - is to establish if indeed her death was caused by the multiple running over by vehicles or if she was dead long before being run over. Something out police continually fails to do is preserver evidence in a situation like this.
Whenever a situation such as this happens - and we saw the Wanjiru case - the tendency is that the police will prefer the easy way out...make out the death as not being a homicide and move on. They simply do not have the resources or the time/manpower to do a proper job.
Mercy's will not be the only death in vain and there are many others that remain unresolved and will remain as such!
On your theory about how she could have been knocked and the expectation that someone should have noticed, the problem here seems to be the time. If for instance she was knocked by a car at 1.00 a.m. as is being suggested, it is possible that there were no vehicles town-bound at the time and a hit and run seems plausible. The story of a 'woman' frantically waving at cars and an Uthiru bound driver turning back to see the body of a woman is rather curious, but again plausible!
It is possible there was a woman at that hour...but who was she and how daring was she to be walking on Waiyaki Way at that time? Just what was she doing there and did she give a statement to the police or is it the Uthiru bound man that volunteered the evidence?
If it is the Uthiru man who volunteered this evidence, should the police not question him on why he did not report the accident having seen a body of a woman knocked down by a cars? If he at the time feared being accused of causing it, how did he gather sufficient courage to now go and report what he tells without fear of being accused of knocking her down and failing to report?
Perhaps the police will ask these questions and will get answers, but at the end of the day, these answers may not answer who actually killed Mercy!
This is quite tragic, Kenya has really gone to the dogs. Those supposed witnesses know what went down, their stories are very suspect and if the police can't see that then there is a problem somewhere it is a big mess, i.e not adding up. The ineffective, inefficient and lazy police are at it again, doing a shoddy job of investigating.
I actually beleive that there are some or many who have already pieced up what really went on. But as institutions in kenya are owned but the few so called wealthy, bwana kubwas ... Justice might not prevail for Mercy, her family and friends. It is a sad business indeed !
WE NEED POLICE REFORMS ... LIKE for the PAST DECADE... !
We have a useless police force and very useless people incharge of our institutions and systems.
It is most unfortunate !
My sincere and deep condolences to the family and friends of Mercy.

dola121945, You are spot on. We know that the police have already killed this investigation by making simple mistakes knowingly. In other words its a sabotage of justice. This has happened in the past and keep happening.
What we must do ASAP is to reform our police. Without PROPER reforms, lets not expect any good to come out of these people. Utumishi kwa wote headed by a crook cannot take us anywhere.
So we can debate this incident to the end of time but nothing will happen to the culprits. Our police have never ever done anything right.

Mzee
You nail it. The police needs urgent reforms. The Office of the President is responsible for the police. I have read your comment on another thread on the AG. Kenyan police are rated among the world’s best.
They lack independence and for this reason the Police will conveniently NOT know what evidence they are looking for. They will walk over it and around it.
The fact is that the leadership is dead at the very top. Had Kibaki for example directed that he will back the Police Boss and urged Itere not to leave any stones unturned, the Culprits would have been known by yesterday.
This brings me back to your comment on the AG. Things will begin to look up when Kenya realizes an independent legal advisor to the Government (read Betty Murungi, the reformer), who will also advise on and facilitate the 5 critical bills crucial in the implementation of police reforms. I still believe that the 5 bills should have come into force first before the current on-going useless police vetting undertaken for PR’s sake.
The said bills that will revolutionalize the Kenya Police are
1. the National Police Service Bill 2010
2. the National Police Service Commission Bill
3. Independent Policing Oversight Authority Bill (IPOA)
4. Private Security Industry Regulation Bill 2010 and
5. the National Coroners Service Bill.
Before then, Kenyans like you and me will continue to disappear without a shred of evidence. Cases will remain unsolved to protect vested interests.

I would be hard pressed to believe that the shoddy job of our police force in murder mysteries is innocent incompetence. It really would not take much to investigate some obvious issues before dishing out dreamy theories as conclusive accounts of causes of deaths in these cases. Choices of the police in these situations are consistent with intentional reluctance, rather than inability, to uncover the truth.
Mercy's will not be the only death in vain and there are many others that remain unresolved and will remain as such!

Kamale if you have every hit a dead squirrel you know how absurd the argument that a body would be ran over and over and over on a street without anyone's notice is. For the body to be hit over and over again, also, it has to have been on the road. Don't Nairobi drivers watch ahead? As for the hour, I have not been in the Westlands part of town at 1.00 am but I have been plenty around town that time, and Nairobi is usually buzzing with life. I would say the chance that things happened as Iteere fantasizes is practically zero.
It is possible there was a woman at that hour...but who was she and how daring was she to be walking on Waiyaki Way at that time? Just what was she doing there and did she give a statement to the police or is it the Uthiru bound man that volunteered the evidence?
I presume Iteere was suggesting that the woman who had been waving frantically was Mercy, and the frantic waving would in hindsight be a suggestion of the state of the woman before "an accident".
That's what's so convenient about the guy who saw the frantic wave and then saw the body ... only he could see both events. Its a fantastic story by Iteere. The audacity to tell such tales is routed in the ownership of the country by a criminal element that is never subjected to the thoroughness of judiciary interrogation. I hope this issue does not end with Iteere's fantasies.
I see has asked for files on the case so he can carry out an investigation. I hope he is ready to disown his tales. That would be a fantastic development in the matter. Hopefully it is not after reviewing files that he came up with the fantasy. However I am skeptical that someone who was so willing to prejudice the case before any investigation can also be level headed in the same investigation. The man is either incompetent at the job or has a criminal inclination - could be both.

Among those witnesses, I suppose, are some real friends of Mercy, and some who probably did not know her but are sympathetic all the same. I believe what is silencing both parties is the realization that the police force is more about concealing the truth while pretending to uncover it.
People with evidence will think twice about their lives when the only party they can give it to is clearly prejudiced. ... we have really gone to the dogs, and the about-turn won't be easy. Mexico today wishes it controlled its crime early. We seem to be headed fast on a one way street to that regret.
Prediction is very difficult, especially about the future.
After days of watching the police circus going around this sad story, this is my take; There is a serious human-trafficking of Intelligent, beautiful and young women going on in Nairobi. Women are the best traps to hook up an innocent unsuspicious girl to join the environment.
This happens always in western and Eastern Europe, Russia and Asia. I wonder how much the police know about this excising Pimping racket for it sounds as if the police commissioner is trying to wind up the investigation fast.
This is what I conclude happened. There is a Pimping Racket selling young, intelligent and beautiful women for high takes. Because usually such Hostesses must have class, flare and of high Intelligence, usually a willing prostitute is not worth that much money.
So, these pimps must be really desperate and therefore use some “willing” Pro to recruit unsuspicious ones. Once these girls find themselves in a compromising situation, I believe most of them just go on with whatever they find themselves into and keep quiet. Either they are seduced by the Rich men lifestyle of parting and go back willingly or maybe it happened only that one time….
But this time the Pimps were too careless and got one who looks like will bring their racket in the open. If I were a Human Trafficker NGO, this is a lead to uncover a very serious Human Trafficking offence going on within the country. Intelligent Beautiful women sold unwillingly to rich men who maybe are lied that this are willing luxury Hostesses or don't care at all.
Look exactly at the age of the girls – between 20 and 25 years old! You get it?
20 years is not a minor is a grown up and also could be argued in court to have willingly gone to the party. And 25 years is the Pick of a woman Gloss (like a blossoming flower) only a professional Pimp would carefully choose that age frame. Is like a horse trader who goes to buy a horse. He knows how a pricely horse looks like.
Such things happen every day in Europe. Police unveil such rackets every other day in German, actually where Prostitution is Legal (pay Tax) but Pimping a criminal act.
So Pimping has gone underground and has adopted a higher class method of Pimping which is tanned as high class Hostess services. (just a new word for prostitute).
They set up an official Hostess Agency (with allegedly independent Hostesses) who officially say they earn their money through giving these girls services, for example Marketing, providing security and Limousine services.
But in true this services are to keep the trafficked girls under ground and transport them where they are needed, keep an eye on them till they finish work, and then drive them back to the hiding. Once in a while a girls escapes and the racket is blown out in the open or police get a whisper from a bird.
So bck here in Kenya and with this current expose through the death of this girl… Who are the pimps? That one guy (with a black necklace) who is feverishly giving interviews, the guys who met Mercy at the petral station, the bodyguards of the minister, or is the driver of the Mercedes a pimp? Are the lawyers who own the Apartment Pimps…is the Minister or Joram a high class Hostess Pimp, maybe Mr Shah?...
There were 12 girls and 10 men in the party. If the Police took statement from 12 People, is one of this 12 people one of the men visitors apart from the minister and his bodyguards? Why spare them?
Everyone in that party is a suspect (sy Mr Iteere), including those men who the hostesses were brought in for - they paid a lot of money for those girls. They should be prosecuted along the pimps too for Prostitution is illegal in Kenya.
Wacha Upusi Mr Iteere.
This not the msako in Kaunage street where willing prostitutes were caught pleasing ministers and other prominent people and the police went to pains to cover it. This is a Human-trafficking, therefore a very serious criminality. Treat it as such.

Kasuku,
that is gibberish. Are you ok?
Speculating about the business behind this murder is not comparable to forecasting the weather - if a weatherman says it will rain, he is wrong if it does not. In this much more complicated issue Kasuku is likely to be right to an extent (and hence brilliant), and wrong to an extent (inconsequential to realists).
At the mercy of an inept law enforcement team we are left to speculate the matter if at all we care about it. From where I read Kasuku's theory does not look impossible. Perhaps you could clarify why you term the theory "gibberish"?
The fact that Ms. Keino's cousin has not shed light on the matter, and instead has seemed to let the public opinion be all formed by the questionable "evidence" of "witnesses" who seem to have seen things the same way (otherwise "coached"), suggests the cousin herself could be deep into something she'd rather not be identified with. If that turns out to be the prostitution Kasuku conjectures, or something else like drugs, I would find Kasuku's theory to be too good to be labeled "gibberish". What Kasuku narrates actually does happen in many places in the world, and people die in the rackets ... in pretty much the style this lady seems to have died.
Keep in mind that many versions of Gibberish are slightly different. You may need to learn a new "gibberish dialect" if you want to communicate with some folks. A common variation uses "thg", "diggadee", "ithica", "dither" or "ither" instead of "idiga". In some versions, for words that start with vowels: A becomes "adiga", E becomes "edige", I is "idigi", and U is "udigu"
