moesha and all,
i had this inkling that mitt romney bubble would bust in south carolina. i had put my money on that evangelical who ran away with victory in iowa but newt gingrich pulled this one off.
i dont know why i have a soft spot for rick santorum but if you ask me he is the biggest winner in the south carolina primary surprises given that it open wide the contest which akinyi had predicted would be mitt romney's for the taking.
gingrich is a lesson to kenyan politician on how to fend off and take advantage of media onslaught at a dicey phase in your political career. compared to herman cain, gingrich sexual proclivity and what would have been a scandal worth reviewing his status, only bouyed him.
the man appears to be at his best when handling the media and oh boy, did you see how he wrong footed opponents and offensive media over that.
i dont know, but i think the gop primaries may go way past the sunshine state...and by then, the field would be narrowed to two, santorum and gingrich. romney has failed to heed the advice of many including akinyi's to reveal his tax return and trust me, he may not be standing in april if he continues with this tired defense line.

oh how wrong I was! a week ago many thought this was all wrapped up up for Romney but after the SC primary it seems the race has just started.
Nereah, serial adulterer Gingrich may have gotten away with a 'clever mouth' but matters such as raised by his second ex wife (allegations that he requested for an open relationship while they were still married) will not just go away. the man has too much baggage!
Millionaire 1%er Romney is also having nightmares at the prospect of revealing his tax records. saying that he MAY reveal them in April only heightens speculation that iko kitu. As if that's not bad enough, revelations about money stashed away in Cayman island and other tax havens isn't helping his situation either.
Santorum may be clean but am sure the media will dig up something now that he vowed to be in it all the way. did i read somewhere that his wife dated a man 40 years her senior (nothing wrong with that IMO) and well, the media being what it is, you never know how low they will stoop.

The week that just ended will remain one of the most dramatic ones in the history of U.S. politics. Huntsman dropped and endorsed Romney; Romney got stripped of the Iowa win; Santorum bagged that Iowa win; Gingrich's ex-wife Marianne Ginther unleashed a deadly interview; Perry dropped and endorsed Gingrich; Romney suffered a debate meltdown, dodged by tax issues; then Gingrich crowns it with that big South Carolina victory.
It's now 1-1-1 for Romney, Santorum and Gingrich. It's like the primary is essentially begining on a new slate. In Florida, Romney has already spent $ 5 million in negative ads targeting Gingrich who hadn't dropped a penny yet.
But as you can see, money doesn't necessarily win elections. Thus, it looks like we are going to witness a long protracted Republican primary even beyond Florida. Super Tuesday will be one spectacle to watch.
The Republicans are struggling to decide who is going to face Obama. Not an easy task.

Obamas state of the union address last night was one of his best speaches ever, in my opinion. He touched on the improving economy and the fact that he inherited an economy that had haemorraged 6 million jobs in the six months before he took office and a further six million before his policies came into place. He aslo reiterated that last year saw an addition of jobs unprecedented since 2005. The speach, in my opinion gives us a sneak peak of the trajectory his campaign will be taking this year, and with the economy showing signs of recovery (touching wood) the republicans will be left with very little in the kitchen to fling at him, considering that the economy has been their biggest talking point in the "Obamas inability to lead" mantra. Link to the SOTU address. www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-57365343-503544/obamas-state-of-the-union-address-full-text/

i can tell that the gop rivals are sparing no expense on winning the latino votes in the sunshine state's primary. could bagging the hispanics votes be the sole determinant or just a key plank?
and talking of latino votes, did you see how the stubborn gop lady governor of the border state of arizona engaged obama over the immigration issue? and as usual, obama on re-election campaign tour(whatever you want to call it) took it on his stride.
cant wait for the super tuesday!

Folks,
Something caught my attention in the New York Times yesterday. I didn't have time to read it but I kept the paper. I read it today. I will tell you what I found out but first let's deal with the Republican nomination circus.
As of now it should be obvious that Mitt Romney will be the Republican candidate. Newt is almost 20% below president Obama in the national presidential polls and the president even beats him in the state of Texas. The Republicans may be crazy but they are not that stupid to hand the second term to President Obama without a fight. So Mitt is their guy and my sense is that he will lose to the president.
Here is why.
When I looked at the NYT paper the article that caught my attention was entitled "THE ECONOMY GREW AT QUICKER PACE IN 4TH QUARTER".
The article basically paints a fairly good picture for the US economy in the bext couple of years. The GDP in the 4th quarter was 2.8% which is the highest in one and a half years.
It is not that great but it is very promising for the USA. When Barack Obama took office the economy was shrinking and the Stock market had collapsed at its lowest since the Sept. 11 catastrophe in the US. It was frightening. The tide is now going the other way. Those are terrific numbers for the president.
The second thing that caught my attention in the NYT was a story from DEARBORN, MICHIGAN where the Ford Company reported the biggest profit margin in 13 years engineered by strong North American sales. Ford also gave the 41,600 workers at the plant $ 6,200.00 each in profit sharing bonuses.
Just a few years ago the manufacturing industry was dying if not dead in the US. The motor vehicle manufacturing was very vulnerable and the Republicnas continue to lament that Obama gave tons of money to the Auto Industry, something they consider an enigma to "free enterprise".
All that is turning out to be fodder for President Obama. The GMC has paid all the money loaned to them by the Treasury. The GMC has saved hundreds of thousands of jobs, thanks to the intervention of the president. The GMC is now making money and is a viable industrial and manufacturing giant in the US. How are the republicans going to beat that? Not a chance.
The last bit of good news for the president I have seen lately was the the latest jobs report which indicate that as of today Jan 29, 2012 the US unemployment rate is 8.2% compared to 8.6% just a month ago.
The Republicans had hoped the unemployement rate would be over 10% come election time. They are going to need a miracle to achieve that.
It looks like the unemployment numbers could dip below 8% by the time the vote is up. If that is the case, Barack Obama will win a seond term in office. It is a long way to go but things haven't looked this much good for the president. He has to keep working at it.

As long as the economy keeps improving Obama's republican opponents basically have no message. Was amused when Romney while acknowleding that the economy is indeed improving, went on to say that Obama taking credit for it is like a rooster taking credit for sunrise ;D.

Looks more and more like an Obama/Romney duel. Mitt after releasing his taxes came back swinging at Newt in last nights Florida debate, especially after the fallout from South Carolina. That was an interesting 2 hours and as of now, Mitt leads in all the Florida polls. Good news to Obama, the slugfest may drag on long into the summer.

Dada Nereah, you are welcome. Washington post has an article that fact checked Obama's SOTU address; www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/fact-checker/post/fact-checking-the-2012-state-of-the-union-speech/2012/01/25/gIQAa5CTPQ_blog.htmlWhat surprises me is the great lengths the "Rethurgs" would go to inorder to paint Obama as a bad president. Their comments border on insanity (It shows how much they loathe the guy) One republican presidential hopefull thanks the navy seals and says obama had nothing to do with the raid. Another asking obama why the USA is interfereing in a sovereign nation. Gingrich goes as far as suggesting that the raid was for political gain in an election year (kwani Newt would have waited mpaka 2013 to rescue the hostages?) My thinking is that the Somali raid coupled with the Osama one and a few other successes (Arab spring e.t.c) waters down Republicans arguement that Hussein is not decisive in foreign policy. Yaani, its plain and clear out there. He will just play the videos during his campaigns. The GOP have, (since Obamas innauguration) always stated that their country is going to the dogs and have blocked any of Obamas bills in congress, and with that mantra, in my opinion, they are walking straight into Obamas meat grinder. i will explain below. Obama has always insisted on both sides of the house working together. He has reached out to the right in his first three years lakini the GOP has always refused to come to the table. The problem was exercebated when tea party elements took over in 2010. The fillibustering reached its zenith mid last year during the debt crisis when the states lost its triple A rating. Obama was at an all time low, he even faced ridicule from the left because of his policy of reaching out to the right. In my opinion that was a watershed moment in his presidency because he started giving it back to the republicans (ala Ali, rumble in the jungle) He was more proactive, delivering his message straight to the citizens, more televised addresses and speeches and townhall meetings where he reiterated that congressional rebublicans are hindering progress for political reasons. With that approach, his message went straight to the populance (which is something republicans presidents traditionally do better than democratic ones) Now what did the Tea partiers do? They continued with their hardline approach not knowing that they are sawing off their own legs inorder to take care of a troubled toe. Fast foward to december 2011 during the tax extension debacle. The republicans were left with egg on their faces when they tried to fillibuster the extension bill. The public were outraged and some key republicans even stated that the Tea partiers were giving Obama an easy second term. Currently, the approval rating for congress is a paltry 18% and the way some republicans have reacted to the Orezos SOTU address, it seems they are not satisfied with a mere 18% approval rating. They want to break the record and go for single digits in approval ratings. How? you ask. Currently 91% percent of Americans approved the Orezos SOTU address but the Republicans are still playing their childish games promising to fillibuster most of the bills whilst offering nothing tangible in return. They are still stuck in their 2010 style of blocking whatever Obama proposes. They seem oblivious of the fact that Obama has changed tact and its to their detriment. That and the improving economy as Adongo puts it....

omundu & all, i hope the likes of politicalmaniac who are witnessing first hand the happenings in the sunshine state would agree with me that the gop presidential race is turning toxic with nasty television ads. the war between gingrich and romney has gone nuclear and while they would imagine that this is some old fashion american competitive politics, they are merely subjecting gop in a self-destruct mode as my informant, john batchelor of the daily beast rightly argues. here is how some wag sums it up: “That’s the great mystery of 2012,” a senior Republican journalist told me while watching the brouhaha in Florida. “We have the weakest incumbent president in 32 years, running on the weakest record in 32 years… and who’s taking the stage in South Carolina and Florida? It has to be the weakest field I can remember. Each of these candidates has in his character, in his history, in his idea set—never mind disqualifying—a guarantee for self-destruction. If Newt is the candidate, he’ll lose badly. If Mitt is the candidate, he’ll lose slightly less badly … So what you have is an almost complete guarantee that if these are the candidates, Barack Obama will be reelected.”source: alturl.com/r9kcanewt gingrich, if am not wrong, is outspending like 3 to one, on television ads yet the callous corporate raider is bouyant thanks to the hispanics, who are predominantly catholic. as i said earlier i have a soft spot for the evangelical rick santorum and would like to see him run away with the gop ricket but the mormon (romney) is increasingly a threat. i read somewhere that majority of women voters have favorable disposition towards romney who i would hate to be the ultimate rival of obama in the 212 presidential race. akinyi, i like that punch line ;D

He has dissected Romney like non other. The vivid pic Rich paints evokes memories of our own empty suit - the wiper, Judas KM. a self serving egomaniac with a weather vane for core convictions. Just what do we know of this fellow, described as a hyena waiting to chew on the falling arms of his fellow political travelers?

bruised newt gingrich dropped the o word as disdainfully as a dyed in the wool conservative would when asked who between mitt romney and obama was his greater evil.then there was romney's victory speech for the sunshine state primary which was as pretensious as they come. ati, gop, would emerge from this attrition war that is primaries much much stronger!
