Thank you for clarifying that the article was from an online rag. If anything, Mochama made himself look even more ridiculous, prejudiced against a slew of people and the causes they represent, as well as utterly, utterly ignorant. Naye huyo bibi wake Sharon sijui ataificha wapi sura yake. Yaonekana kwamba habari hizo kuhusu Shailja zilikuwa pigo kubwa kwake so much so that her response was that her husband does not "need" to assault anyone. Some women really put our gender in reverse gear... For her, the alleged assault is not about her possible molester husband, but rather about kukana that she (Sharon) might not be enough for him sexually. Aii, tafash. Well, I wish Shailja well wherever she is. Hehehe. Dineo I see you caught on to what Abdulmote & I were alluding to earlier. The article may be from an online rag but I would hazard a guess that the defense will be pretty much what Mochama will present at a court of law. Also does that make it any less credible than the allegations on Twitter, many from a third party who wasn't there? At least these are the direct words of the alleged molester. We are yet to see direct DETAILED quotes from the alleged victim. That said, I think Mochama is being just as ridiculous as his detractors were being of him. Molesters & sex pests should be condemned...once it's proven in a court of law that they are such. To condemn someone on the basis of flimsy allegations that the victim herself was a) unwilling to make personally or b) prosecute through the authorities personally could lead to an injustice in its own right. The two have finally taken the right action, Shailja by filing an official complaint with the police & Mochama by suing for defamation. The truth will soon out. Only then can we condemn one or the other...or maybe even both...

b6k,
I don't think that my perception of Muthoni Wanyeki adds any value to this conversation, nevertheless, I am a member of various mailing lists covering different aspects of our nation from technology to human rights. In the latter case, I happened to be a member of one such mailing list along with Muthoni & others. To me she came out as arrogant and perceived herself as the SI unit of truth even in her interaction with other activists. I don't want to let this override the real purpose of this thread.
It is strange to me that a sizable number activists and activist organisations (not all) have taken the position that Tony is guilty until proven guilty. I have used the example of Ann Njogu who faced damaging allegations and what the sensationalisation of her case did to her in terms of public perception. It seems however that whenever an allegation is raised by an activist against one who clearly doesn't fit their ideals, then the activist has to be right.
Tony Mochama may take a different view from most activists on social issues. He may be a drunkard and all, but that is precisely one of the reasons why he is entitled to a fair hearing. Haven't we heard of cases of people being murdered by policemen just because of what they look like or based on their behaviour? I lost one of my ex classmates simply because he had dreadlocks! That to the policemen was a sign of criminality. Although investigations subsequently found that he was innocent, he is gone and will never be back again.
How about the men who had been thrown into prison in the USA just because the strongest piece of evidence, largely due to the bias of the all white juries, was that they were black? Several went on to spend over 30 years in jail only to be released when more advanced technology went on to prove that they didn't commit the crimes. They may have been jobless at the time the crime was committed, they may even have been misfits based on societal descriptions, but they didn't commit the crimes. It was a justice system that was inherently biased towards their mostly white accusers. So in that case, since both sides have not one but multiple witnesses, we should let the justice system do its work.

Indeed, Luol Deng. At the end of the day activists are human and like any other close knit group can have the tendency to form a mafia of sorts. The Mochama counter-allegation of a "vendetta" against him by some of the ladies has to be examined just as much as Shailja's allegations should be. The courts should be able to sort through the he-said, she-said chaff...

Anyway, now Mochama's wife has decided to stand by her man so let me do my bit to keep the drama going: Tony Mochama’s Wife Jumps to His Defence Over Sex Assault Allegations 30 September 2014 , By Richard Kamau “My hubby has never and has no need to sexually assault anybody in his life and we as a family stand by him in this time of a bitter witch-hunt by some ill-meaning individuals,” she added. m.nairobiwire.com/2014/09/tony-mochamas-wife-jumps-defence-sex-assault-allegations.html/I find the last sentence illuminating... b6k, I find this a bit embarassing. Illuminating, is the sense of irony deliberate? I mean, when ones wife is such a stunner, and one is out drunken beyond limits, and frequently too, is it not so that a brother is abandoing dingdong duty? Illuminating!? something aint adding up in this picture perfect!

Jakaswanga, methinks Omundustrong is simply being human by strongly reacting to that which hits close to home, if his moniker is a hint at his origins. Haven't we seen the same kind of reactions from El president over the last year & a bit? Let's catalog the major ones:
(1) WESTGATE: Upper class target in the heart of the capital with globally cosmopolitan victims including kasini & his fiance making it very personal. Robust condemnation & response even going to the lengths of getting Agwambo on board to present a united front against terror.
(2) MPEKETONI: Having occurred in a settlement scheme created by Jomo Senior victims were predominantly (not exclusively mind you) from one region. Robust condemnation & response regrettably hinting at Agwambo's involvement even when Al Shabaab eagerly accepted responsibility of the attacks. The old ethnic charge last seen during PEV reared its ugly head on this one all evidence pointing to terrorists notwithstanding.
(3) KAPEDO: Attack against state agents culminating in the theft of state weapons. Robust response & condemnation at site complete with ultimatum on return of stolen firearms
(4) MANDERA: Attack against low end civil servants (22 of whom hailed from Western) in a remote outpost. Muted response with statement read by deputy during the F1 weekend. Unverifiable action taken in Somalia with no proof that it achieved it's objective.
So clearly when terror hits close to home, expect the reaction to be emotional & maduong... I am sorry b6k, but I can not resist using your observations to illuminate another point here. --The class nature of victims as determining the official outrage or reaction. Of late, Kenya has been shaken by the stripping of tightly-dressed women by touts and other males as others curiously looked on. In fact it is only after these incidences hit broad daylight Nairobi that they have gained national condemnation, and even presidential attention. Yet, when the poet Shailja Patel was .. what did Smitta Smitten really do to her ... reported to have been 'done' and in friendly company too, all the social worms crawled out of the woodwork to cut off the balls of Mochama! NB: There is a sickening video from Githurai in which the touts even say: leta chupa tuuingize! they are ready to rape the woman with a bottle inside a matatu. Suddenly Patel and Mochana going viral on social media, while we stay silent on the stripped and openly violated women, wreaks of ... selective moral outrage? I saw your comment on Omundustrong, and it hit me! Sorry I lifted the post to this thread.

The Twitterati remain a vocal yet harmless bunch because they haven't yet figured out how to turn the outrage that gets their thumbs tapping into direct action. Just look at the hits on this thread compared to others, several of which are real life & death issues to gauge for yourself...

5 years ago this issue elicited a lot of reaction, not all the facts were clear to me then. I subsequently spoke with one of the eye witnesses who was with Tony at the said meeting on the date when the sexual assault was alleged to have happened. Since then I've been absolutely convinced that this was a cooked up story by two ladies who had an axe to grind with Tony Mochama. The verdict is out, they have to pay 9 million in damages and provide a written apology to him within 14 days. www.the-star.co.ke/sasa/2019-08-05-court-awards-kenyan-journalist-sh9m-in-sexual-harassment-case/

I hope lessons have been learnt. I still wonder though why the two women made the stuff up?! Look how costly the allegation has become.

And now, Shailja Patel Rejects $87,070 Court Ruling in Sexual Assault Defamation Suit by Tony Mochama, Leaves Kenya on Self-ExileA week following the awarding of Sh9 million ($87,070) to Tony Mochama in his sexual assault defamation suit against Shailja Patel and Wambui Mwangi, including an order for a written apology to him and prohibition from any statements against him, Patel has now reacted. On 14 August, she Tweeted that she is “speaking of my own accord, with no instruction or affiliation to any other party in the case.” She described the activist Wanjeri Nderu-Musembi, who testified for Mochama, and the magistrate A.M. Obura as “partners-in-crime” who “need to silence me permanently on Tony Mochama’s sexual assaults, obstruction of justice, abuse of the judicial process.” Sharing documents on the case, she stated that she had “left Kenya. I’ve gone into exile, knowing I face jail if I ever come home.” Read the full thread below. brittlepaper.com/2019/08/shailja-patel-rejects-87070-court-ruling-in-sexual-assault-defamation-suit-by-tony-mochama-leaves-kenya-on-self-exile/

Poor woman! You get groped illegally by a randy fool and instead of going to the authorities you think that cyber-activism will work for you? You now stand a massive risk of slander from the person you accused of groping you! .....and it came to pass!
