RR A mind in dissent against populism need not be retooled.
Let me say in the run to 2007, I reasoned a new katiba was a priority to me and the country, and Kibaki woud niether birth nor enact one. ODM was more likely to, and so I supported her fully, up to and including activism. There were bitter pills to be swallowed, as independent critics rubbed it in only too well. --Ruto and Mudavadi (among others) were well publicized Moi-monsters, and their high-profile positions in the ODM meant they, in power, would never account for their past sins --not so? And with them, a whole tribe of their acolytes, not so? It was a tough spot, but I did not flinch. I said I thought yes, and I was drinking poison in the broad, mixed-bag front for the sake of a brand katiba. Because I believed if the new katiba did not come, there would be violence, and I just seen enough of that in other countries.
Economy? I believed Raila wouldn't be any better than Kibaki because anyway the IMF and the World Bank would be running the treasury and the CBK regardless. So uchumi was not an issue to me in 2007.
Fast forward: My priority now is corruption. The figures as I have seen them on monies lost to corruption, convince me there can be no massive economic take-off without a radical tackling of this problem. (Like those ksh.30 bns from the WB to build the 30km Dongo-Kundu bypass in Mombasa just about squares with the 'errors' under Uhuru and Oburu at the treasury.) Borrowing massively to steal. So, Looking at the wishy-washy character of Raila when it comes to corruption, and his old entourage of recyled kings of graft, my thinking is he is not the guy to do it. (I have also seen missives in this thread decrying the weakly corruption section on the ODM-reloaded website!). So obviously this is a lost case within ODM. They as much as admit the towel is in the ring.
A brilliant campaigner and mobilizer he be, a trash adminstrator and headless chicken in policy he be. I go for a candidate with an aptitude for the tedium of implementation and follow up. Now that is Martha Karua, a workaholic.
NB: Just from the top of my head I think I remember The Southern Bypass Nairobi costed at less than ksh 25 billion, needed a loan from the China Exxim bank. Asking for a small loan is not a problem. The problem is how much money the KRA could not account for from internal revenue even as the government declared itself too poor!

Now that is Martha Karua, a workaholic. Please share any proof of Martha's aptitude for implementation and follow-up. Which particular projects has she successfully implemented without needing to be slapped around to do the right thing? If her time at the Ministry of Water and the MInitry of Justice are anything to go by, that lady should be kept away from the reins of this country. She's the type that get's carried away with power. Her unnecessary arrogance during the 2007 fiasco (wrongly believing she was part of the powerful clique) will never be forgotten.

b6kHere's a summary of today's session! Oil resources will be used to benefit all Kenyans, says PM @railaodinga
Pime Minister Raila Odinga became the first presidential candidate in Africa to use the live stream - social media technology in a political campaign. The PM answered questions from Kenyans across the globe, on the early morning show Friday, hosted on his website, www.raila-odinga.com.
The Prime Minister said that oil recently discovered in Turkana will be exploited to the full benefit of all Kenyans, if he is elected president in the coming elections. He said that as opposed to examples in many African countries where oil has been a curse, he will ensure that the mineral is used to transform Kenya’s economy for the good of the citizens.
“We will transform the country from a resource-poor to a resource rich nation. Presently our country is energy deficient. This makes energy expensive, thus making our products uncompetitive. We must invest in energy, and the oil has come as a blessing,” the PM said in response to questions on how to improve the economy
The PM said that apart from increasing agricultural production and food security by initiating massive irrigation projects in areas currently considered arid like Wajir, Marsabit and Turkana, his government will promote value addition and empower farmers through the provision and subsidization of farm inputs. He used the example of Malawi, which has transformed itself from a food-poor nation to a regional breadbasket after adopting farmer-friendly economic policies.
“In doing all these, we will be able to create jobs in our rural areas. It is jobs. It is jobs. It is jobs. That’s what Kenyans need. To do this, we must move to exploit other resources as well and also diversify by investing in other sectors, including technology,” the PM said.
“We must invest in and improve our infrastructure. We must move to invest in our infrastructure in order to build our economy and create jobs. I will champion the expansion of highways and the building of railways and roads to ensure all the counties are connected and accessible,” the PM added.
He said for the country to move forward, tribalism and corruption must be tackled as the two greatest enemies of nationhood and development.
“This country must be united. Yet ours is still a very divided country where we live in ethnic compartments. We will create national values to help kill tribalism. Corruption must be dealt with surgically like cancer. Institutions dealing with corruption like the police, the courts and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, must be strengthened to make them more effective in fighting corruption. We must also be ready to re-evaluate our values as a country,” he said.
He called upon Kenyans to conserve the environment, saying this would form the foundation of a green economy. “I appeal to Kenyans not to invade forests,” he said.
He said he will ensure fiscal discipline and acute drop in government spending by putting in place measures against waste and leakages of government resources, observing that currently up to 85 percent of government revenue is consumed by the recurrent budget.
The PM responded also to questions on universal health care, climate change, security and land.
The live streaming interactive session shall be held once every week to allow the PM to personally and directly respond to issues being raised by Kenyans.

Her unnecessary arrogance during the 2007 fiasco (wrongly believing she was part of the powerful clique) will never be forgotten. Karua is like quite a few before her---great on reforms before tasting power or after losing it. (Yes, I know she "resigned", but that was only because Kibaki hurt her feelings.) This lady must be kept on a very short leash, and until she goes through a sufficiently lengthy (10 years from 2007/2008) and sustained rehabilitation, VP is the most people should consider her for.

Gemagema, let's take Phil's impromptu transcription as the real deal for now. Truth be told, this is the first time he has replied to the non-ODM hoi polloi so it's not a bad thing. Time will tell if his response is absolutely kosher though. But if ODM has adopted online communication from Jakom himself, the assumption is they must have transcripts to document the historic contact between wolf & sheeple. Once EVERY week? Hmmm...let's see how long those sessions can be maintained.

Phil is not presidential candidate and it does not serve any purpose to keep doubting anything ODM. Its a free world in a multiparty democracy, you are free to join URP, SDP or any of the other parties. You can even form your own party for all I care. I think the best thing is to be there when the candidate is online. This is unprecedented in Africa and most of the third world where a presidential candidate facing voters directly and taking questions from them. Thanks to technology, this is is just but one way of fighting side stepping a hostile partisan media. Even better, these direct sessions eliminate the need of having to deal with propaganda in the Kenyan blogosphere that is dominated by NSIS agents campaigning for a status quo. Yet another first for ODM. (Remember the on going Youth and Women Conventions at Bomas of Kenya are aimed at creating two independent National Leagues for the party; also a first in the political history of this country!!!)

Phil, I agree with you. That is why a comprehensive summary of the first Q&A session is required. If the sessions are not well documented the PM is likely to find himself being asked the same questions over & over to the point the who gimmick online town-hall meetings will be abandonded.

Phil this is an overstatement. You may not like her or think her a significant player in Presidential Politics but Martha Karua launched #AskMarthaThursdays on twitter way before the PM's recent appearance. Indeed I've heard claims that Raila is copying Martha Karua. She has also been very active with diaspora engagements online and on conference calls engaging voters. So while Raila's engagement is admirable and should be encouraged, it is not unprecedented for a Presidential candidate.

Martha Karua's so called twitter sessions could be a fraud to those gullible enough to send "questions". Last time I checked, Karua had about 10 twitter handles, so which one is genuine? Besides, when you follow someone on twitter and they post an update, how certain are you that you are talking to the person the handle purports it is? Karua could even have a technical team engaging people on twitter while she is running other personal errands, that is how unreliable these twitter sessions can be. On the other hand, Raila Odinga's sessions are on live stream. Depending on your connection, you could as well be sitting at his office having a direct chat with him during the Talk2Raila sessions. Thus my earlier take still stands. Raila's is unprecedented.
