Sam Kwega shot, probably dead, in Kondele ... More to come Sam Onyango Kwega is the Kisumu Town West ODM Chairman He was badly injured after gunmen ambushed his car and shot him and his wife. This has led to unprecedented public demonstrations in town and right now huge crowds have are standing outside Kisumu's AGA KHAN hospital where admitted in ICU. Unconfirmed reports are that Mr. Kwega has since succumbed to his injuries and official doctor's announcement is awaited. The apparent assasination is being blamed on the now feared China Squad which is affiliated to a leading political party and was named in parliament by Internal Security minister as receiving sponsorship from a leading presidential contender.

A prominent Kisumu businessman and his wife are battling for their lives after being shot and critically wounded by thugs in broad daylight. The shooting incident sparked off a wave of protests by an assistant minister Ayiecho Olweny and local residents who marched in the streets demanding action. Shem Kwega and his wife Rose Onyango are admitted at the Intensive Care Unit at Aga Khan Hospital. The duo was shot at a few minutes after 10am, along Nyerere Road, near Mamba Hotel. A witness, Morgan Ashino, said the two thugs armed with a G3 gun, blocked Kwega’s car, before he got out. “He came out and held the gun, before one of them hit him on the head with a fist,” said Ashino, a motor cycle operator. Kwega then got into his car and tried to drive off, but the thugs shot him several times, as the vehicle swerved into a ditch. His wife was also shot as the gang forcefully took a bag reported with some money from her. Ashino said together with four other motor cycle operators, followed the thugs all the way to Nyamasaria, about five kilometres away. More than 30 police officers drawn from Kisumu and Nyando Divisions are hunting the gang, who drove from the town in vehicle they had earlier hijacked. Kwega is the Kisumu Town West Constituency ODM chairman and in 2007 sought parliamentary seat, but lost in the nominations. He owns two petrol stations in the lakeside town. The shooting comes only two days after an acclaimed researcher was killed by thugs in Tom Mboya area. Dr Joseph Odhiambo, of Centre for Disease Control (CDC) was hacked on his head on Saturday night. www.standardmedia.co.ke/?articleID=2000069501&pageNo=2&story_title=Kenya-Protests-over-insecurity-in-Kisumu

@ Mzee
Multiple sources in ODM and media are confirming that Shem Kwega has since passed away and his wife is in critical condition in ICU at Aga Khan Hospital Kisumu.
The Nyanza PPO is still telling jounalists that Kwega is in ICU and not dead as is being rumoured. he obviously fears mob backlash and is awaiting instruction from Nairobi.
Violent protests continue to rock Kisumu as a statement is expect shortly from ODM Leader and Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Phil, The wave of violence has to be properly addressed in Kisumu town. We can have a situation where anything goes in the town while the police stand by because they are supporting one side of the divide.
Raila need not only make a statement to condemn the violence but put in motion action to curb the tide of violence. The issue of police top brass appearing on TV to to tell useless stories must stop.
When Ojode sirikal was in government, I would be sure of fast action but now...I really don't know.
Residents have surrounded the police station overturning police vehicles and demanding that the OCPD, PPO etc to go. They want the man who brought calm to Kisumu before these useless folks came brought back. The police chief they are demanding is called Mr. Wanyama. A guy who never used to joke with criminals.
Its said that its the so called "china" gang that has killed Mr. Kwega whom they shot in the head while the wife was shot in the arm. It seems that wife will pull it off.

Quite easy for one to die for commercial or political reasons but this attempt at passing it on to TNA is downright stupid. TNA has no stake in kisumu politics as that is the perserve of ODM so it must be internal ODM politics.
Phil you know this Kwega fellow was rigged out in favour of Nyagudi so it is clear who would be interested in outing him as it were.
In fact I think this nonesence belongs elsewhere but not in Jukwaa. Why not try and have it discussed in the new ODM home DC?

Take some chill pills and relax if it hurts you so much that Nyagudi was rigged out. We have not associated the death with TNA unless there is more you know. Sashhh!

Police just opened fire on innocent people in Kondele. If we can ignore kamalet's idiotic rant for a moment, can you provide more details on this?? Did they actually use live ammunition on protesters or blank / rubber bullets? Are there any fatalities?

Hehe.. Kamalet has unwittingly let the cat out of the bag, that TNA is the sponsor of at least one of the gangs in Kisumu - China Squad.

Hehe.. Kamalet has unwittingly let the cat out of the bag, that TNA is the sponsor of at least one of the gangs in Kisumu - China Squad. That's why I called that comment idiotic. China Gang is funded by well known TNA operatives in Kisumu Town. The TNA Secretary General ONyango Oloo comes from Kondele, the TNA Co-ordinator for Kisumu comes from Kondele, as does the late Shem Onyango Kwega whom the China Squad members accused of having been behind the recent razing to the ground of some butcheries and buildings belonging to Omolo of TNA. This could be the motive. The thugs who killed Kwega were carrying a G3 rifle which is not a favourite weapon for any gangster because it is hard to conceal. The crime was committed in broad daylight infront of witnesses. G3 is normally used by state security agents who we must point out have openly taken sides in the gang wars of Kisumu seriously compromising the security in the lakeside town. Here are some pictures of the late Kwega before being wheeled to the mortuary. Viewer Discretion Is Advised : twitpic.com/b8fz0b

Police just opened fire on innocent people in Kondele. @mzee just confirmed this story. Riots have escalated and the mob has barricaded the Kisumu - Kakamega highway and even threatened to invade the Kondele Police Station. As it is three protesters have reportedly been shot dead in Migosi as riots esclate. It means police are using live ammunition.

This is a sad state of affairs in Kisumu and it seems to me it may get worse as rival gangs execute each other in broad daylight. It's even worse with police taking sides, perhaps a quick reshuffle of senior cops will cool things down followed by quick arrest of culprits. Just like in any other big city, we have many idle youths in Kisumu who join gangs for token money and protection. Unemployment is a ticking time bomb in Kenya.
But how long before innocent Kenyans from 'rival' parties and communities are sucked into this mayhem and attacked as is always too common in such chaos? Only time will tell, I hope there will be no more escalation. It's a pity because Kisumu had got back on it's feet after the 2008 violence and investors had flooded back ready to make the city the regional hub of Great Lakes region. They must be scratching their heads wondering if they made the right move by returning there.

Phil, Just confirmed that four people are dead and youth are mobilizing in Kondele/Migosi area to confront the police.
Word is out that "china" had actually warned the police that they would be doing something big . The police as usual took it to be some kind of joke.
I'm monitoring the situation.

You have no basis of why this guy needs to be killed by TNA or even if there was a political motive. In the meantime barricading a police station and stoning people is not the most civilised way of mourning the loss of a loved one....

The ill fated car... Very sad indeed, from the registration, it looks like he had just bought this great Nissan Murano which he never enjoyed for long. The image reminds me the way my good friend Oscar King'ara and his colleague Paul Oulu were executed in Mamlaka Road, not far from state house. They both worked for Oscar Foundation and had been warned by then Govt Spokesman Alfred Mutua. Their killers remain at large three years on. Then just a few weeks ago, an Islamic cleric met the same fate in Mombasa, his killers vanished in broad daylight. It looks like the work of professional hit-men Who execute people during the day without any fear- funny/sad there never seems to be any policeman in sight. They do it knowing they will never be apprehended by anyone and I have no doubt they will strike again. How right they seem to be!

Wewe kamale wachana na mimi You started making wild claims that ODM were killing each other and that this guy was rigged out of ODM nominations. What was the basis of those claims? I have much more evidence - that was even corroborated in parliament by Internal Security Minister Metito - that TNA are funding Kisumu gang fights, according to intelligence in the hands of police. One wonders why he has not acted on this evidence in similar vein as he did for MRC in Mombasa.

You are the one who identified that political party as TNA hence bringing it into this conversation. I wouldn't put such acts past TNS though.

ODM MOURNS KWEGA'S DEATH
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has received with profound shock news of the brutal murder of the party's Chairman of the Kisumu Town West sub-branch Mr. Shem Onyango Kwega in Kisumu town this morning.
Mr. Kwega was a dedicated official, who served the party diligently and with loyalty. His killing by unknown assailants this morning outside Mamba Hotel in Kisumu town is a big blow to the party and to the party followers who elected him to serve them as their chairman in last year's grassroots elections.
His killing comes in the wake of cries of increasing cases of insecurity in Kisumu and it's environs, a situation that has become a major concern to the residents of the Lakeside town.
We condole with the family of the Late Mr. Kwega and pray for the quick recovery of his wife, who was injured during the shooting and rushed to Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu.
The ODM calls on the government to investigate the motive behind the murder of Mr. Kwega and bring the culprits to book. The ODM also calls on the government intensify security in Kisumu and the surrounding areas to avoid the brewing tension among the residents.
Security is a basic human right and we urge the government to provide security to every corner of this country especially during this electioneering period.
Prof. P. Anyang' Nyong'o. Secretary General. ODM. 29/10/2012.

jaber, nyakisum siti ;D is standing right besides me as i type this line in an beauty shop off jaramogi oginga odinga street.we drove in from bondo,a couple of minutes ago so i am not fully upto speed but i will be helping myself with this and all that during a dinner at an eatery somewhere in milimani where a handful of kisumu insiders will be in attendance.
we drove via obote rove into the city centre and besides the sizeable animated crowd at what jaber tells me is "kisumu's kamukunji" on the pavement just across the standard chartered bank, the town is largely calm.
traffic is normal and so are the businesses.
i will be back

Kamale, Phil & Others- A kenyan has been violently murdered and his wife is fighting for his life. Before we turn this crime into a political football and a shouting match, decency demands that we respect the departed and have in our thoughts and prayers -if you are a believer- those wounded. We also have to use common sense and agree that the perpetrators of this crime should be brought to justice. The best way to do this is to collect the evidence before it is muddied by the ODM/TNA nonsense going on in this post. If ODM thinks the police are complacent, they should collect the evidence and take action based on the evidence. I must confess- I am hearing about china squad for the first time. I assume this is some form of Jeshi for hire cobbled up for the up coming elections and not some chinese outsourced to cause mayhem in Kenya. I must also confess that I have no clue who Kwega is. But when it looks stupid- it is stupid. This guy did not have to die like this. Senti 5 Phil- what with the pictures? I guess you are game when it is your turn......

If large numbers of these angry young men are only left with gangs, racketeering & extortion as their sole source of income we are sitting on a powder keg....
